I've never watched Star Driver, but I have watched Gurren Lagann and the robot powered by Manhood/Orgones, and phallic imagery, and the little robot fitting inside the bigger robot makes me think of that.

The first episode was pretty good, but I couldn't help but laugh when Daichi said, "When is it that I began to hate the wind that blows in this town?". Such a godamn anime line.

Yeah I noticed that, too. There's gotta be a better way of translating "itsu kara". "How long have I", maybe, even if it's less literal.

Well there's that, too. Very reminiscent of the river bank literature girl from Daily Lives of High School Boys.

I liked the first episode, even if it was confusing a bit. Things hopefully look to become clearer. The main character look a bit like the man character from Eureka Seven and I'm pretty sure I saw Ed from Cowboy Bebop in there as well.

Also for the curious I saw Orgone mentioned, which is a psuedoscience "sexual energy of the universe" which you can capture with a box. Hopefully this won't get creepy. For those of you in the indie tabletop scene, hopefully this won't be a Bliss Stage.

It's Enokido and they have a late night slot, so it's probably going to get a little creepy (first episode already had a little of that). But probably more abstract-weird-poo poo creepy and less are-you-sure-this-isn't-just-porn creepy.

Thoughts: That was a really awesome combining sequence. Not too sure what I think of the characters yet considering that was a typical Utena/Star Driver style intro episode where we don't really delve too deeply into any of them. The "Interceptor" and "Ark" factions mentioned at the end of the episode immediately call to mind Muv Luv's internal strife over the Alternative IV and V plans, so I'm wondering if this will have internal conflicts too and not just about fighting KILL-T-GANG.

Considering the preview for next week mentioned that he was getting his butt kicked until the hacker girl helped him we might actually get a pilot who has to train a little.

Star Driver 2.0 is the sort of thing I could never decide if I wanted or not. I mean, strip away all the fab, hilarity; it has touches of humor, and what little there is is Enokido as gently caress, but the tone is decidedly more somber ; and style and what do you really have left? Wall-to-wall cliches, nonsense and angst? Without that certain brand of coy, self-assured stylistic bravado to latch onto or help the medicine go down, it makes for a jarring experience going from muted colors and internal narration to wacky colors and oh wow this really is just Star Driver again they're just straight up using LIBIDO and mysterious transformation words that start with A.

So I'm still not really sure. It's Star Driver without the anything that made that show so striking and has very little with which to compensate. I mean, it looks great, if slightly flatter and more kid's show-y than I was expecting(the whole package looks a bit like Heroman, right down to the MC's mecha), and sounds great, and the characters aren't too annoying but it mostly just struck me as obnoxious and boring. Hopefully everything will be obvious soon and it'll all start to gel into something coherent.

I love these loving names, tho. It's like Enokido's trying to out-Gundam Gundam.

I'm getting a weird a weird vibe of Star Driver x Robotics;Notes from this show, although that might just be the usage of the Tanegashima space center. And the bizarro hacker girl. And the kind-of-aimless-slacker-but-not-really protagonist.

It seems to be a little less decisively weird than Star Driver was, at least so far, which could be a problem if the show is like 80% regular semi-serious robot anime and then 20% "GET A LOAD OF THIS! WOO!"

Still, good enough to keep watching at least. Although I will say, the mysterious singing in this one SUCKS by comparison.

I was suspicious after seeing the PVs, but now it looks even more like this is going to be this season's Majestic Prince, just a pretty good mech anime that's kind of thrown in there next to a bunch of other really good shows. It's still very impressive though. Great animation, a totally Enokido transformation sequence, and pacing that just drops you into everything. My expectations aren't being met though. Where's that pile of weird that I have to dig through with a rusty mind shovel? It's too coherent. Everything makes too much sense.

I really liked (what I've seen so far of) Star Driver and really liked the first episode of this. Good shows with interesting themes to them, SD has got a lot of criticism but I'm yet to really see if it deserves it so far from the show. People talking so lovingly about the transformation sequence is cool - it's like a veritable orgy of symbolism. It reminds me a lot of Captain Planet (by our powers combined...) only way more sexual. Got to finish SD now so I can compare the two better.

Well I'm interested, even if that was one long rear end mecha transformation. Slick as hell animation too, drat. The characters aren't really grabbing at me right now, but there's plenty of time for them to do it, this is a two cour show right?

R;N I honestly think is mediocre with a bad ending. Though I am biased because its suppose to be the third entry in the Science Adventure series, after Steins;Gate (which was amazing).

The boys at two sides of a fence thing really reminded me of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. So while that's a pretty ridiculous line, I got really dark vibes from it, like "this town is literally next to auschwitz and the wind is carrying human ash" dark.

The difference between confinement and rest is a shift in perspective

It's amazing because this is like a super robot anime during the big post-Evangelion boom that showed up 13 years late. The entire last five minutes is basically entirely in english because they're trying to get all the terminology out at once. Mysterious girls (like at LEAST three), mysterious boys, all probably powering giant robots, overwrought mechanical combination sequences and kids falling rear end-backwards into giant robots. Like... It has literally everything.

That's sort of my opinion. I'm definitely not giving up on it before we even see a fight.

I really liked Star Driver, but I was able to forgive a lot of the weirdness in it because of the premise and the unique way the mecha worked in the world. I'm not sure weirdness will work as well in a more standard robot show, but we'll see.

It recaps. There are a couple of solid moments in the flash-forward at the beginning (if I ever get intensely bored, I may just sub that bit and put it somewhere someday). The West Maiden arc is deeply and awkwardly rewritten to fit in the time slot and the East Maiden arc essentially skips to endgame. On the one hand, Needle and Window Star are omitted. On the other, so are the rest of the character side-stories (or glossed over in a montage) and the West Maiden's core story is missing some important functional bits.

Ok it looked wonderful and the combining sequence was ace but goddamn this is the most ANIMU storytelling I've seen in a longggggggg time. Dead hero dad, mysterious magical girl with magical pet, mysterious childhood friend, look at my rad boomerang, look at my random cyber gun, you are the chosen one here's your robot etc etc etc. Almost couldn't handle it but i'll watch another ep or two

I can only assume the show may go downhill in episode two when it decides to explain everything, but I really enjoyed the incredibly densely-packed story and character we got this episode without needing to slow down and tell me why there are giant robots or what the space gun is.

Good mecha stuff either dispenses with needless exposition and lets the viewer pick it up as they go through good execution, or dismisses stuff that people will be familiar with if they have even a passing interest in the genre - Star Driver turned this into a big joke by having Takuto refer to conversations with his grandfather we never witnessed, but which were obviously big deals to him. Some stuff, like Shin Mazinger Zero, actively does a thing with the fact that at this point these stories are full of trite bullshit that doesn't need to be explained because the reader already knows it. Kouji-kun is trapped in a cyclical existential nightmare and it rules. Shin Mazinger Z explicitly begins after the end of the final episode in a blasted impossible hellscape, then goes back to try and figure out how the hell things got so messed up. It's a neverending cycle of pain and destruction that only has a 'good ending' if you watch literally the first scene of episode one and then turn the show off at 'HAPPY END' and never touch the series again. It's a massive joke at the expense of the viewer, a-la the Dark Tower series. "Here's your ending. Oh, you want more? WELL NOW YOU'RE hosed!"

In fact, Star Driver basically had a scene (in the school play episode) that flat out stated something similar. The series villain told the president of the school's drama club that the only reason the story had a happy ending was because it stopped right at the point that you could hope everything would work out for the best, even if the more likely path (in his view) was that everything would go to hell.
