There are a number of pretty chill "2007-esque" LP threads on the subforum right now, even if they aren't constantly appearing on the first page, and no one has been banned or probated over them.

Metroid Prime combined the fun exploration element that I liked about Zelda games and earlier Metroids. It was, honestly, less about the combat and more about the wandering around looking at stuff and finding sweet gear or data logs. I played with the Wii controls and that helped sell the immersion. The sequels didn't quite sell it the same for me, though, and I quite halfway through each. I'd still argue M:Prime 1 is a really good and fun game.

Choco1980 posted:Yeah, I flat out could never get into the Prime Games. I'm a big fan of Metroidvanias, but exploration-based FPS games ala Half-Life or Portal are still MUCH more FPS than MetroidVania style. I've heard nothing but bad about Other M but haven't really looked at it more than a few minutes, and even then it looks worlds more appealing than the Prime trilogy just on the very nature of it not being an FPS. I know people LOVE Prime and talk all the time about the exploration of it, but that's like replacing your cherry popsicle with a pint of fudge ice cream. Yes they're both frozen deserts, but they're not at all alike. Honestly, five minutes with Other M and you'll change your mind. Also fudge ice cream and cherry popsicles are both great, so I assume you mean to imply that different styles of exploration in exploration-heavy games is a very delicious thing.

zfleeman posted:I can hear guns cocking in this thread. ![]() Choco1980 posted:Meanwhile, the metaphor went along the lines of no matter how good fudge ice cream is, and how much you like it, past being a frozen delicious treat it will NEVER be a cherry popsicle. That's how I view Prime to actual Metroidvanias. It tries to attach itself to the franchise while being total apples and oranges. I hear what you're saying, and agree that the exploration in Prime is very, very different than what you seen in Metroidvanias. I also feel that the developers addressed this by making the "Prime" franchise separate enough from the mainline Metroids. So now we have Metroid-brand Apples and Metroid-brand oranges and that's totes okay.
