If you're going to have 19k in it, why not look for a better example to start and have a pristine one? That one has been used as a car, not as a special toy. There are enough S2000s out there, with a lot of them having "special toy" status from the start, that you'll find the right car, not just a car.

Here's a pristine one I'm considering instead:

I don't have a garage right now, though, so I don't know if I could keep it that way.

Thinking of getting the blue one and driving it as is.

I would take that white one in a second over the blue one. Toss $18k at the white one and see if the owner bites.

Here's one that's 5 minutes from my house... I guess I just have cheap car options nearby...

No rules. Not a dick move on your part, it may be a dick move on his part, depending on what the agreement he has with the other guy, but if you want it, play for it.

That's a damned sharp looking car. If it's been maintained and has a damage-free (preferably original owner) history, it'd be tough to go wrong. Especially if you throw 17.5k cash at him and see if he bites.

DO IT.

You don't like AP2's?

I've only been looking at S2ks for less than two weeks so I'm going to try and do it right - low mileage in a color I want. I imagine it will be something I'll want to keep for a long time.

The other part of me is screaming at myself to try and swipe that GPW for the time being and deal with washing my car twice a week until I find the example I want and switch them out.

Or buy a NC Miata or MR2 Spyder to scratch the droptop itch until I find the right S2K.

I just heard back from him; its still for sale but he rejected the 17.5 offer I made. I'm having a hard time digesting the mileage for the price.

Do you guys think I could sell this for 18 or 19 in 5 years when I have 90k miles on it?

If the guy that offered at $18250 didn't come through with the cash, I'd give him a call in a few days and see if it hasn't sold. $750 isn't that far apart.

And there's no way you'll get you $18k back with this car.

Maybe you get lucky and they go up in value, but I doubt it.

But you don't buy an S2000 for financial gain.

You buy it because when you drive it, the car speaks to you.

If you have driven one and know what I am talking about, then buy the drat car and don't worry about losing money. You won't regret it.

If you don't know what I am talking about and it feels like any other car, and you are more concerned with flipping it, then go fix up a Supra or something.

I like to get about 10,000 miles out of my cars per $1,000 of depreciation - for some reason that's the golden ratio for me. I was spoiled by buying my last car at 60% of book. Since this is a frivolous, unnecessary second car, I'd like to keep costs as low as possible - I have a hard time spending money on myself.

I'm going to try and outbid on the GPW to 19k, if that doesn't work I'll probably buy the LBP.

Question for the S2k experts: I noticed that the "all red" interior on the Chicane Silver AP2s just is red seats and carpets - was the red dash an AP1 only thing?

dandaman

Yes, the full red was a limited AP1 interior.

S2ks have pretty much their depreciation point now, but if you think you'll sell it for $18k in 5 years, you're living in a pipe dream.

The S2000 is a low maintenance car. The 1-2 shift gets a bit crunchy when cold and I've heard of exploding diffs, but I never had an issue with mine. Just keep up with good preventative maintenance and keep a lookout for a slipping clutch. Mine started to signs of slip (stock clutch) at right around 65k miles.

Mine did have a weird issue with the fuel gauge though on my last few months of ownership. The digital gauge wouldn't show a full tank, even right after filling up. Kept my eye on the trip odo, but was kinda annoying. The car was an 05 AP2 btw.

Best three colors for this car. Laguna Blue (Yes I'm biased), Grand Prix White, Berlina Black. They are very classy looking, also not too common, but not flashy.

Any other color is either too boring/safe/common, see Sebring/Silverstone/Chicane Silver and Suzuka Blue.

Or will make it IMPOSSIBLE for you to resell it later, see Spa/Rio Yellow and New Formula Red (which is known as Not For Resale in the community). You can also include Imola Orange and Lime Green Metallic, but those are UK colors only.
