Is there any real difference between these two PSUs?

They look like the same thing, but with different prices. I must be missing something.

Is there a certain make and model of PSU that works particularly well with an ASUS Maximus Hero VI for around $100?

What else is going in there? The Seasonic G550 is my go-to for PSUs <$100, but without knowing the other components, that's just a shot in the dark.

I have an Intel 530 240Gb SSD, an old NVIDIA GTX 650, 8gb 1600 RAM, and an i7 4770k.

I plan on getting a new video card when Nvidia's 800 series cards are out.

I was thinking maybe this, but read a review that said it didn't work well on some guy's ASUS.

That much power is for at least 2x power hungry video cards + overclocked CPU and all the normal stuff. Power is power, don't worry about compatibility between brands, just worry about quality and if it has the connectors you want. The only compatibility thing with Haswells is supporting sleep mode or not.

Yeah, I've overclocked my CPU already and haven't ruled out running two high-end Nvidia's in the future for 4-8k resolution.

Is a Radeon R9 290 with 4 GB DDR5 for under $400 a good idea for a video card right now? It looks like it's going to be a while until the next generation of either Nvidia or AMD cards are released.

What's a good price on a used Asus Radeon 290 4gb video card?

This model specifically:

I am bidding on one on ebay and am looking to go around $260. Is that too high for used condition?

edit: assuming "use" means like 2-4 months.

I wouldn't touch a used Radeon right now with a 10 foot pole. Any used Radeon at this point, particularly the high end were likely used as Bitcoin/Altcoin mining rigs. That means they were run at full load 24/7 for the entire time the original owner had them.

poo poo. This one didn't say it was used for Ron Paul money, just said it was in excellent condition. I imagine the condition is exaggerated, but figured it would still be a decent card. I'm locked in with my bid now...so I guess I'm 100% screwed if it was used for mining?

I just spent a chunk of time looking at this stuff to scratch the new card itch, and here's my .02 -

R9 series cards are recently released so are a lot less likely to have long term problems from mining. If the person ran them hard 24/7 and had a terrible setup, it's more likely to have some trouble. If the person was smarter and undervolted (a lot did for lower electric bill draw) with proper cooling, it won't be as big a deal. 7xxx series cards I'd shy away from as they were probably dogged out for a lot longer.

Some vendors only look at the serial number for warranty, so if you buy the right brand you'll still have warranty coverage! This spreadsheet seemed accurate (not mine, came from a random forum post): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArCtGVODPUTtdEdEUjRiSFdyckZ1Q1dGNUI3bkd5R1E#gid=0.

It seems to be a great time to buy a used Radeon from the glut of cards; you're taking a risk by getting a used card, but getting an R9 series with a warranty you can use will mitigate some of that risk. Personally, I was hunting for a Gigabyte 280x for <$230 and ended up getting a Gigabyte 7970 still under warranty that should OC to 280x speeds from a reputable [H] seller who didn't mine with it for $200. $300 performance for $200 with no sign of new higher performance cards coming out for the foreseeable future is pretty cool. Also, 290's seemed to be going for a lot more than $260 so I wouldn't worry too much about your bid sticking. Good luck!

Thanks a lot, that graph might come in handy. Hopefully I can get a warranty because my bid did stick, and I got it at $260 with free delivery. I guess I'll see if I'm screwed, but the seller has a good rating, sells video cards often.
