Chui's Log: Isawa Calendar Date: 20/Shiba/3122 Recent, troubling reports in the region have put high command on edge, justifiably so. For now these reports have remained classified and only to be shared on a need-to-know basis with obligations of secrecy. Sooner or later however the truth will become evident and on that day the integrity of our legionnaires will be tested. Although it may well be merely an error or an event of little consequence, recent events necessitate the legion being flexible, future logs should detail the result of this manoeuvre. Trouble brews southwards Attention faces elsewhere A historic name Signing off, Mirumoto Yuudai Chui of the Paneki Eighteenth Legion . . . The Paneki, Somewhere near the 'southern' border of the Empire of the Emerald Stars 20th Day of the Monkey, 3122 The Paneki is a Wakizashi-class battlecruiser, one of the several similar battlecruisers that are in the Eighteenth Legion, one of of the many legions that make up the Imperial Legions. Founded long ago during the reign of Hantei Genji, by the then-Emerald Champion, Doji Hatsuo and the famed magistrate Soshi Saibankan - alongside the Emerald Magistrates as agents of the Emperor in order to maintain peace and security throughout the empire, and to ultimately defend the Emperor and his holdings. Even if you are not in one of the legions that are stationed on or around Rokugan itself, or even in more civilized sectors of the Empire of the Emerald Stars, it is still a great honour to serve in the legions. This cycle begins as it usually does. The Eighteenth Legion's patrol region simultaneously covers a relatively lawless area but also a relatively empty area, and thus there is an element of tension and an element of tedium for the more action-focused samurai. The slight, distant hum that resounds in this vessel means it is never truly silent But today for you, things change. Each of your standard issue Pocket Adjutant devices buzz (alongside any more 'civilian' devices of a similar nature you have registered) as whatever you are currently doing is interrupted, and you receive a summons to the Chui's Office. The summons is urgent and by Mirumoto Yuudai himself, the Chui of this ship and ergo this unit.

Moshi Narukami Narukami stares at the device in her palm. She's still not used to it - after all, the monastery she was raised in only had a single terminal, and there was always a little competition to get some time on the device. I mean, they may be monks, but they still had interests... so having it in her hand just feels like cheating. Or like a leash, perhaps. It even gives her a map, as if she hadn't memorized most of the non-maintenance areas already. Tucking it back into her obi, she makes her way towards Yuudai's office at a swift walk. There are no explosions or shouts, so it's urgent but not urgent, looking up at the confining ceiling above her. Maybe, if she's lucky, whatever it is will give her a chance to see sky again, at least for a time. pre:Moshi Narukami Family: Moshi Clan: Mantis School: Moshi Shugenja Rank: 2 Experience: 70 Insight: 150 Honor: 4.5 Glory: 1.0 Status: 1.0 Initiative: 5k3 Armor TN: 15 (base 15) Air 3 Awareness 3 Reflexes 3 (12 xp) Earth 2 Stamina 2 Willpower 2 Fire 3 Agility 3 (12 xp) Intelligence 3 Water 2 Perception 2 Strength 2 Void 3 (18 xp) Void Points: 3 School Skills Rank Trait Emphasis Roll CP Battle 1 Perception - 3k2 - Calligraphy 1 Intelligence Cipher 4k3 - Defense 3 Reflexes - 6k3 5 Lore: Theology 1 Intelligence - 4k3 - Meditation 2 Void - 5k3 2 Spellcraft 1 Intelligence - 4k3 - Other Skills Athletics 1 Agility - 4k3 1 Computer Use 1 Intelligence - 4k3 1 Etiquette 1 Awareness - 4k3 1 Intimidation 1 Awareness - 4k3 1 Investigation 1 Perception - 3k2 1 Jiujutsu 1 Agility - 4k3 1 Lore: Elements 1 Intelligence - 4k3 1 Lore: Mantis 1 Intelligence - 4k3 1 Piloting 1 Intelligence - 4k3 1 Sincerity 1 Awareness - 4k3 1 Advantages Benefit Chosen by the Oracles (6xp) Thunder; +1k1 to Air ring rolls. Daidoji Ken'o Ken'o was walking back to his quarters when his Adjutant began chiming. Based on the tune, he knew who it was and the priority of the message without even having to look. The app was pretty popular in the Imperial Legions and most clan forces, but it took training to memorize all the tunes. The complexity of the chime could vary, but Ken'o had heard of units that could convey entire AARs from a series of electronic beeps. Ken'o stepped behind a public Shoji screen and read the message in detail. He just got out of a patrol debriefing, so he was still in his flightsuit. He punched in commands for a service-bot to meet him at a washroom near the Chui's office with a fresh Kimono. He then queued up his chonometer on his Adjutant. The Paneki's record for quickest changing out of fatigues to uniform has been standing for 15 years, and honestly that was just too drat long.

Utaku Xiaomei Xiaomei is quietly supervising a pair of heimen crewmen who are overhauling the engine block on a light APV in the vehicle pool, while also doing some make-work on her hoverbike. The noise in the bay is loud enough that she doesn't hear the Adjutant chime, but does feel it buzz at her hip. She glances down at it, then back over to the heimen. "Toroka, you two can handle this on your own," it wasn't a question. "I've been summoned." The two heimen bow smartly to her then turn back to work. Xiaomei snaps shut the panel she had open on her hoverbike, walks to a washing station to quickly clean off her hands, then starts on her way to Yuudai's office. An urgent summons? That could only really mean one thing in Xiaomei's mind - a mission. An important mission.

Daidoji Yachi Yachi is in the rec room when he gets the call. He glances at his Adjutant. He glances at the sake in front of him. He stares at the Adjutant. He stares at the sake. He puts the Adjutant away and drinks the small cup, then stands up, steps to leave...and pours himself another cup and drinks that first before going, popping a mint into his mouth to hide the smell as he goes. If this wasn't REALLY urgent, two cups wouldn't even be noticeable. If it WAS truly urgent, two cups would calm the nerves. He gives himself a quick check before he arrives, a rather handy addition to his Adjutant that checks his breath, and it comes up clear. Shiba Akane All told, sometimes space can be surprisingly boring. All the vast nothingness everywhere, infinite black and only the twinkling stars in the distance. Cut off from everything, except only brief transmissions to tell everyone else that nothing is going on. Akane doesn't mind these occasional times of nothingness. Even far away the Empire is a never ending rush of activity, and these pauses give her plenty of time to catch up on the academic journals from the rest of Phoenix Clan while she is away. Time to just sit down in the cosy little chair, sip from a freshly brewed cup of jasmine tea, and see what crazy theories the Agasha are trying to-- *BZZT! BZZT!* "Oh, of course." She sighs and sets down her data pad, the Adjutant going off on some notification. If it's another spam e-mail from StringedIn--the Chui? Now? And why her of all people? If there was anything remotely involving her she would have been told a while ago, why now all of a sudden? Well, there will always be a time for tea and reading. Ichiro Oshuda The Hornet in his pocket was buzzing. That was the damnable thing about this job...and modern life, really. The constant demands, the interconnectedness of everything. No one was ever able to be alone anymore. Not for long. Sighing, he got up from his bunk, where he was supposed to be off duty. He was just so tired, lately. He hadn't been sleeping, of course, but it was hitting him harder now than it had in the past. It was the strangest thing, really. But no time to dwell on it now. Chui's Office, The Paneki Coincidentally you all manage to arrive at about roughly the same time (perhaps the Fortune of Graceful Meetings smiles upon you all), outside the Chui's Office, give or take a few seconds. Enough time that as the door beeps to let you in unceremoniously that you all make it in there at once. Mirumoto Yuudai is standing with his back turned to the door, gazing out the large observation window that dominates his office, into the vastness of space. He lingers a moment before turning and bowing appropriately for a superior to his subordinates, from behind his desk. He gestures to a set of mats that have been arranged in front of the desk, waiting for you to sit before he is indeed seated. To the left, already seated behind a less ornate desk is Otomo Daisuke, Yuudai's bureaucratic adjutant and the ship's primary link to the bureaucracy (although technically he would go through the flagship's bureaucratic adjutant first but there are extenuating circumstances where other things will happen). He acknowledges you appropriately, while remaining seated and is currently surrounded by a whirling holo-display that he is using constantly. Consequently he always seems slightly distant. Once everyone was seated, Yuudai began to speak. "I am happy to see that you all came some promptly, however this is a matter of some importance and so I hope I do not seem rude if I move straight to the matter at hand. A few hours ago we received a distress signal from the relatively nearby system of Nikaru's Reach, further surveillance has determined it to be originating from Nikaru's Reach III-a, the relatively unimaginatively-named moon that orbits the gas giant Nikaru's Reach III. Records show that that moon to house an isolated Crab Clan research outpost named Nikaru's Rest, and otherwise have no known settlements or facilities." As he talks about the system and the moon, the hologram projector in his desk silently activates and begins displaying said celestial bodies, before it focuses on the moon in question and technical data appears. quote:
"The Paneki, being the nearest ship of a relevant class to Nikaru's Reach is obliged to assist. However the distress signal is generic, and furthermore various precedents and... requirements we are currently under would deem this a wasteful exercise if we deployed our full strength without any further information regarding this. As such it is my duty to send a scout kite to investigate, crewed by you." he continues, his brow furrowing as he talks about setbacks. "Hopefully once there you will use your initiative on what to do next, if anything, however at the last I would hope to be fully informed as to the nature of the distress and any assistance that we might provide this remote research outpost, if any is possible." he continues, his tone darkening as he talks about possible loss. "But suffice it to say I believe a varied scouting party is the best way to succeed against the unknown and as such each of you have been picked for this occasion. Following this meeting you are to proceed to this mission as soon as possible, within reason. Due to time constraints any requisitions will be considered immediately, within reason. Asides from possible requisitions, do you have any questions?" he finishes, leaving the swirling image of the moon and its data floating about. Meanwhile, Daisuke sits by and is... continuing to do whatever it is he is doing. Bureaucratic stuff, presumably.

Daidoji Ken'o As Ken'o listened to the briefing, he quickly went over Yuudai's selection for the mission. Obviously he and Narukami would be responsible for getting the team to Nakaru's Reach III-a. He didn't know as much about Yachi as he really should, but if he's anything like his aunt then he has ground recon covered. And the Badger, Monkey and Unicorn would be able to shoot whatever trouble there was between them. It was Shiba Akane that had his curiosity. Ken'o of course understood why warships had scientists assigned to them. But if one of them was being put on the rescue team, then command didn't expect this to be a standard operation. For now though he kept that question to himself. To ask directly would be presumptuous. "Sir, was the distress signal a recorded broadcast?" Moshi Narukami Looking over her peers, Narukami ponders the situation. The full weight of the kami on her, then? Not that the thought bothers her too much - she's got a confident air - but it means she's going to have to be fully prepared. Hopefully, there will be time for prayers prior to launch, but more straightforward concerns come first. Peering at the hologram as if it was still some sort of curiosity for a bit, Narukami then sits back as if satisfied. "What sort of support will be available?", she asks aloud, hands in her lap as she sits in a near-meditative position. "And do we have any data on the local weather?" A very Mantis question to bring up, really.

Utaku Xiaomei Xiaomei sits, listening to the briefing stoically. She occasionally glances at one of the others assigned for the mission. She's actually a bit relieved that Yachi and Oshuda have been selected for the team. Making new acquaintances can be awkward, so having people there she's already worked with several times is a comforting thought. Ken'o is an obvious choice as a pilot, if what she's heard of his skill is true. She doesn't know much about the others, but assumes based on the nature of the mission that their abilities will be important. When there is an appropriate break in the stream of questions and requests, the Battle Maiden does speak up. "How is the terrain in the operation zone? Will we be able to land at the research site, or will we require a vehicle large enough to transport the team?"

Chui's Office, The Paneki First turning to Ken'o, Yuudai responded swiftly. "The distress message is generic but it is still active." he gestures and what you obviously artificial voice echoes from the walls "Assistance is requested. Scientific outpost Nikaru's Rest is reporting a dangerous situation. Any assistance is appreciated as soon as possible. The coordinates as of this moment are..." it says, finishing with coordinates towards Nikaru's Reach, followed by two sets of spherical polar coordinates towards its primary, and then the moon in question. "Every time it is rebroadcast the individual coordinates are refreshed, so their broadcast system is still active." he continues, once having gestured once more to silence the recording. Next he turned to Narukami. "Support will come in the form of your Shibata-class scout kite, standard arms, armour, munitions, survival, and fuel packages, one Hinin-template labour robot." replied Yuudai, gesturing as he mentions the scout ship and causing another holographic projector to generate a rotating display of the craft out of the ceiling. "Previous data gathered on the planet by the Imperial Explorer Corps indicates that the weather is generally drier and gentler than standard Rokugani weather patterns, growing drier and stiller with proximity to the poles and wetter and rougher closer to the equator. The research station itself is located roughly equidistantly between the north pole and the equator. The only perilous aspect of the weather is the propensity for this world to suffer fogs and mists, even far from the coast. Assuming there hasn't been any active terraforming efforts on the part of the Crab the Explorer Corps survey data which I will now supply you with should all be accurate." he continued, as he mentioned the weather data upload your pocket adjutants come to life once more indicating as such. Now he turned to Xiaomei. "The terrain surrounding the facility is predictably defensible. The facility's outer walls extend four-fifths outwards from the centre of a large plateau that it is situated on, however the plateau itself is relatively elevated making ground access difficult, although not impossible as last evidence indicates that the Crab have built a steep road down the sides of the elevation. The area that surrounds the elevation is largely a flat, dusty plains - with other smaller, similar... mesas some distance away, from what my current information indicates." replies Yuudei, pausing as he uses a foreign word to describe a geographical element that the Rokugani do not possess a simple term to call. Following this, Yuudai looked to Ohkawa. "Although the Crab have made no official statement regarding Nikaru's Rest or similar facilities, I believe the implication is that the Crab are taking advantage of being relatively uncontested in expanding into this region, and thus are spreading their facilities - particularly research facilities which may necessitate isolation, relatively thinly and thus tacitly laying claim to the systems in question. I imagine that in time they will likely establish more conventional operations, assuming the cause of this distress is not as... fundamentally catastrophic as it could possibly be, of course." Now, Yuudai looks towards Akane. "The Crab have largely been silent on this end, however protocols indicate that this was some kind of weapons technology research. More than that however, I cannot say. However it seems that the Crab give these outposts relative independence." he replied. Finally, Yuudai turned to Oshuda. "The Imperial Explorer Corps survey catalogued most life present on the world, once sanctified. The report indicates that life is relatively sparse here, flora and fauna do not grow in great abundance. Flora largely takes the form of disparate shrubs and fungi scattered around, however in the wetter parts there are more forests, of a sort. Fauna on the other hand native fauna does not tend to grow over a certain size and is largely not a threat to humans. Overwhelmingly the flora and fauna of this planet tends to take on generally greys and browns, although I cannot say for sure this may well be due to the Meido influence." said Yuudai, gesturing appropriately and causing 3d diagrams of scattered flora and fauna to appear - the trend tends to go towards looking 'emaciated', although that may well be just how they look and not indicative of their nutrition. "Are there any further questions? I believe that information is important when it comes to the proper handling of a mission, especially one where you are expected to use your own initiative." spoke Yuudai, looking to you all in general.

She would be the co-pilot, after all. "Oh, and do we have a time restriction on the mission's success?", she adds as her last question, looking up. ~Daidoji Ken'o~ You rapidly access the archives and get a chance to admire its design and purpose. It's a multipurpose scout ship with some combat ability, perhaps not the quickest of ships if only because it is a little more heavily armed and armoured than some of the more subtle models. Consequently it is designed for more solo operation, with a reasonable carrying capacity and a reasonable fuel storage. A mid-range scout to be precise, more long range ones would have more extended survival technologies involved. You think it wouldn't take too much practice for you to get used to this very quickly, it's not too distant from your Baraunghar class vessel, the biggest difference is scale, and that is largely to allow it to transport more and considerations for its size while still maintaining its role. ~Everyone~ "It is indeed acceptable." replies Yuudai in response to Narukami's question vis-a-vis extended survival, nodding to Daisuke, whose motions change slightly as he does something inscrutable but presumably involved in the process. "As to the time restriction, Opening the Way gives us some luxury with regards to time, and although the fleet is nearly always moving, the fleet itself will be redeploying via Opening the Way five days from now, you will have to at the least returned to the Paneki by then, or hopefully given a mission status so that we might respond accordingly. However assuming there are no significant changes of plans through the fleet, the five days time limit applies." responds Yuudai to Narukami's second question, pausing to think at appropriate times. "Are there any other questions or possible requisitions?" inquires Yuudai. ((Edit: Removed TWO typos. Jeez.)) Infinite Oregano fucked around with this message at 23:57 on May 10, 2014 |

Utaku Xiaomei Much of their time will likely be spent investigating the Crab facility, but there's no guarantee they may not need to venture further afield during a possible five day stay on the surface. Or need to make a hasty retreat to a safe distance in an emergency. After Narukami inquires after extended survival gear, Xiaomei speaks back up. "It may be advisable to have a ground vehicle on hand, so we don't have to rely on the Shibata exclusively to get around. I would like to requisition a light four-seater vehicle." She was purposefully vague on the type, so the Chui could issue them one from the vehicle pool that the Shibata could safely carry. It also really didn't matter to her what kind of vehicle they were issued - if it had wheels, treads or repulsors she could comfortably drive it. Of course, she'd also bring along her hoverbike. That went without saying.

Nage-yari class rover will suffice, especially as there are weight limitations." replied Yuudai to Xiaomei's request, Daisuke seemingly acknowledging this... you think, and his actions change subtly. "So it shall be then. You are hereby dismissed." finished the Chui, bowing appropriately, you having your orders. Leaving the Chui's office as appropriate you venture into the rest of the ship. Do you do anything else en route to the hangers, or is your plan to head straight there?

Daidoji Ken'o Ken'o heads right to the hanger to get back into his flight suit and do the pre-flight inspection. OOC: Left a post in the Recruitment/OOC thread.

Moshi Narukami Narukami is also at the hangars, but to do a different sort of maintenance, to purify the craft through prayer and ensure the spiritual integrity of the vessel. There are also prayers to be done at the hangar shrine, too, to Supasu-no-Kami, Kyokkohime, and others. As she starts to wrap up the preliminary prayers, she looks to Ken'o. "Oh, is there anything in particular you wish me to pray for while you do that?", she adds with a sort of spiritual practicality to it. No doubt he can perform his own prayers, but she's the sole pro pray-er on the team.

Utaku Xiaomei Xiaomei heads to her shared cabin, slips on her field armour, gathers her equipment, then immediately heads to the vehicle pool to assist in the loading of the Nage-yari rover issued to the team. Once it's aboard, she has her hoverbike moved into the Shibata's hold as well. After that, she quietly boards the scout ship and finds an out of the way place to settle in for the trip.

Toku Ohkawa Ohkawa carefully double-checks all her gear, puts on her vacsuit, arms herself, and heads out to the ship. She can do her routine blindfolded now, and her gear is in perfect condition, so it doesn't take long. There's no reason not to refuel before they leave, so Ohkawa has a meal and a nap on the Shibata while the others prepare.

Daidoji Ken'o Ken'o stops briefly to consider Narukami's request. "My brother Issu should be entering his first squadron right about now. A prayer for his safekeeping would be appreciated." Ken'o was onboard the Paneki when Issu had his Gempukku ceremony, and he would hate for something tragic to happen before he could congratulate him in person.

Daidoji Yachi Yachi swiftly returns to his bunk and prepares his things. Armor? Check. Weapons? Several? Check. Rifle - hard to miss that one, check. And so on, and so forth. Then he goes to a small hidden compartment and ensures his OTHER gear is there. Various knives, cords, stakes, and other simple implements for making rural traps? Check. Camouflage paint? Check. Hunting gear? Check. Making sure everything was nice and snug in his pack (save the gun and spear, those were tied loosely and tightly to his back in that order for ease of grasp), Yachi arrives at the scout ship. Well. There may have been a drink between. But only one. For luck!

Moshi Narukami Narukami nods quietly, going to the shrine to complete her and his prayers. There's a lot to bear under the spiritual needs of six others, and so prayers to manage their prayers are included as well. But it's good enough to be on a ship of righteous crew, and not having to perform her prayers between thugs in a drunken brawl for a change.

Shiba Akane Akane made a quick stop back at her rooms, safely storing all of her journals back in their proper "to read later" pile on her desk. Then she pulled out a small container holding multiple silk bags, each with a small object representing the spirit realms. Even the locations of the bags were similar to the locations of the realms. Nikaru's Reach III-a was associated with Meido. The realm of waiting was close to Ningen-do, Yume-do, Toshigoku, and Yomi. Completely cut off from Jigoku. Her object was a mere stone, only standing out in how dull and unimportant it was. But the grey stone was similar to the countless others in Meido. With a tiny bit of string, she slipped the bag around her neck and tucked it under her uniform. A task like this would take time and patience. Something the Crab weren't known for. Just what were they doing here? Akane set those thoughts aside, and meditated on the stone. She set up an alarm to notify her when the time to depart would arrive. For now, she waited.

~Everyone~ So it is you proceed to the Shibata-class vessel, designation the Dokueki. It seems a sturdy enough vessel, and with your preparations afoot a Nage-yari type rover is also loaded with its cargo. Final checks are underway, and with little fanfare you fully board and explore your kite. It's not exactly the most spacious of vessels, but it is sufficient for your mission, with enough room for some additional passengers should it be necessary, although notably there is definitely some extra space that was lost to the rover. Other than that it contains all the standard necessities as one might expect from a scout vessel, including a ritual chamber for the ship's shugenja. Preparations all go as planned and soon it is time to depart. A final check over of the inventory of the ship shows that everything is here that is expected to be, including various standard supply packages (including the extra resources as requested), the Hinin-template labour robot, Xiaomei's bike, and the aforementioned rover. With Ken'o at the helm, the docking bay it is in is cleared of foot traffic, and its starter engines kick in, suspending the vessel under its own power. Then it slowly moves out, passing through the skin-like field that keeps these bays contained when not under threat. There is a slight shudder as it enters the vacuum of space, and the various systems adjust to deal with the relatively sudden lack of atmosphere. The ship passes further and further away from its mother ship, it shrinking before your eyes. Your vision otherwise dominated by the many sisters of amaterasu, suspended in the heavens. You are now moving under your own power and are free to do as you wish. What is it that you do?

Daidoji Ken'o Ken'o flies the Shibata Scout Kite(call sign: Dog 1) through a couple of way points to make sure he's used to the controls. At the same time, he does a hot check of the sensor and communication arrays, just in case a system decides to behave differently now that the engine was running at full blast. Once he's satisfied, he radios Narukami (who he's sure appreciates a ritual chamber that actually has leg room) "We're all set to Open, Narukami-san." He then contacts the Paneki. "Pagoda, this is Dog 1. Talk to you again in 12000. Over and out." OOC: "Pagoda" is Rokugani pilot-slang, basically means "Flight-Control Tower." "12000" is just a reference to the time limit (5 days = 120 hours)

Moshi Narukami Held in her meditative position, Narukami's ritual would be quite impressive were anybody present in the chamber with her to see it. Mind, they'd probably be struck by the lightning playing about as she mumbles the prayers to manufactured kami, stirring them from their slumber and calling upon their immense power. Whenever a shugenja calls upon power, there's a bit of a misconception that the shugenja wields the power, when in truth they're simply requesting it from the world. This is more pointedly true in this case; the energies involved would readily destroy her if channeled, but instead they're turned outward, to the world about her. The gate opens.

Toku Ohkawa Ohkawa stands there, hands by her sides and her head bowed slightly. If anyone strains their ears, they can hear her doing that stupid Monkey ritual again. "Compassion. Courage. Courtesy. Duty. Honesty. Honor. Sincerity. Compassion..."
