Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAwzJHX3KKI

Tabletop Simulator just released today on Steam. What is it? Well, it's just what it says on the tin, a simulator of a tabletop. It's powered by Unity and looks to provides a framework for playing traditional games with people over the internet.

Chess? Yeah, we can do chess.

Reversi? DONE.

Card games? I know literally nothing about card games but they're in there.

Meticulously constructed dungeons and dragons campaigns? Given enough time and effort, sure!

gently caress mahjong.

It's even got that hipster Go poo poo nerds are always talking about.

Modders are hard at work recreating other stuff for it too. It's still in early access and not fully-featured just yet, but in time this could prove to be quite the robust little game!

EXACTLY. And one day I can try Warhammer without having access to Donald Trump's vast fortune.

I'm sure 40k stuff is what people are fervently working on already. Anyways, does this have any sort of rewind feature or a way to lock things in place so it's not just a table flipping sim and you can actually get things accomplished?

Yeah, there's an undo button in the game so that you can undo table-flips and reverse mistakes! And also if you make a really good domino chain and you want to try it again there's that as well.

As for locking things in place, I don't know for sure but I imagine it will be implemented soon, it's been mentioned a few times in the Berserk Games forums!

Yeah, I'm picturing a good portion of games beginning with table flips, progressing into scattered table flips, and ending with table flips just for consistency. Which is not entirely a bad thing if you go into it expecting that.

As Chaz said, there's an undo button that can help unfuck situations. As for locking objects in place, the game boards themselves are immovable objects, so I'm sure something like that is possible in theory.

There's also gravity controls if you want it to look cool when games devolve into throwing poo poo everywhere. :3:

I'm sure you'll be able to flip the board as soon as modders figure out how to mod simple rectangular objects into the game.

So are people going to recreate TCGs in this? What's the legality behind it?
It would be great for less popular ones that you can't find people to play with.

I hope someone makes a Shadowfist module for it. Hell, images of all the cards are already online. :allears:

Though actually I imagine making decks could be a hassle.

There's actually a few utilities that already exist that do this, though without the 3D look and an interface that completely sucks:

We probably won't see a lot of take down notices.

Obviously I'm interested in the project as a possibly better way to get games together online, but the screenshots are telling me that it's not ready for prime time (not surprising since it's yet another early access release). Maybe it'll look better a year from now.

Just to make sure, all this does is simulate the physical part of the games, right? It has no rules integration?

When I get the game I might do the six premade decks for Shadowfist's Combat in Kowloon/Back for Seconds, I'll probably never actually play it, but I'll make it!

Would you even be able to do something like that? I wonder how complex the 3d stuff can get.

It is a Unity game, it would be as simple as importing the models with an animation tied to pressing a button. You can see in the videos the physics is all already there, Unity does it pretty well right out of the box.

What I don't know about is whether rules integration for more complex things will be possible. Playing munchkin over the internet would be awesome, but if all the players are moderating the game themselves, then you can't really just play it with random people - if you aren't playing with people you already know and are talking on teamspeak with, then there's no guarantee that you won't have a game ruined by someone deciding to start throwing cards around everywhere. I kind of fear that is who the primary audience for this is going to turn out to be - pewdiepies treating it as another Garys Mod thing, with no real interest in actually playing board games.

If you can create objects with their own physics (e.g. triggers, buttons, etc.) as mentioned above, I would love to see a game like Weapons & Warriors implemented.

There's a lot of lovely kids and family games that keep getting published out of sheer momentum.

I don't think anyone has ever played a full game of Mouse Trap, they just set up the board and then ran the machine a few times. I don't think anyone even really knows what the rules to Mouse Trap are...

Oh jeez, I had one of those too. No idea where it went, and I don't think I ever actually played it by the rules as opposed to just messing with it, but it indeed awesome. Man, hadn't thought of that thing in... No idea how long.
