 Chaika The Coffin Princess (Hitsugi no Chaika) is a anime adaption of a light novel series by Ichiro Sakaki, the author of Scrapped Princess, it's being animated by BONES with Masui Souichi (Scrapped Princess, RahXephon) as the director. Story: Crunchyroll and ANN posted:The year is 1604. On the continent of Verbist, an age of war lasting for three generations finally ended with the fall of the northern nation, the Gaz Empire. In addition to legitimate knights and soldiers, the militant forces sent to battle included wizards, saboteurs, and mercenaries, totaling 620,000. What's more, three airborne strongholds and massive numbers of magical weapons plus beast and dragon cavalries were added to the ranks, ending in the annihilation of the Gaz Empire, which had been deemed "the root of all evil." Cast:  Chaika Trabant (VA: Anzai Chika) A young sorceress with a magic PTRD she carries around in a coffin, doesn't mince words.  Tooru Acura (Left, VA: Majima Junji) A lazy and poor former sapper, though in this setting it appears as if sappers are more magic commandos than combat engineers. Meets Chaika while gathering edible plants/getting attacked by a unicorn, subsequently hired by her to break into a mansion and steal a magical artifact. Akari Acura (Right, VA: Hara Yuuko) Tooru's adopted sister and also a former sapper.  Alberic Gillette and company Apparently associated with "the Postwar Restoration Agency", they are after the same magical artifact that that Chaika is seeking. Why should I watch this? The animation is decent, the choreography and action is pretty good, and the setting seems like it'll be a bit more interesting than your usual generic fantasy setting. Personally the whole setup really reminds me of Pumpkin Scissors, a group of people traveling through a country after the end of a long war. Where can I watch/read this? Crunchyroll simulcasts it on Wednesdays at 11:00am Pacific. There's also a manga, but it and the LN don't appear to have been licensed yet.

For as much as this borrows from Scrapped Princess, I think the setup has more potential. Scrapped Princess suffered from using really generic stock characters and JRPG tropes. You had invincible Sword Bro, Invincible Wizard Sis, and useless whiny Princess Girl. They were all well written characters, but still... So far Ninja Siblings and Magic Tank-Gun Girl lends itself to much more clever action scenes and the central mystery seems a bit more involved as well. I just hope it doesn't get as...weird as Scrapped Princess got near the end, or at least doesn't recycle the same twist.

Im liking the show. The cast being a speech impaired magic sniper rifle wielding big eyebrow princess, either brain injured or absurdist genius sister and no nonsense sociopath brother has it being one of the most bizarre motley crew of protagonists Ive seen in anime recently. Seriously Tooru outright telling the noble heroic guy that he would enjoy the return of war to the land was a breath of fresh air. I hope it sticks rather than turning out he didnt really mean it. I also found how the two potentially brain damaged girls communicate with each other pretty drat funny. Akari-"Chaika?  "Chaka- "Yes.Chaika. Liking it pretty well. It's standard anime fantasy action fare, but well done, so that's enough for me to be interested. I could do without the moeblob princess with chuu2 powers, but said powers are pretty cool and despite her writing, her character is actually pretty good. The post-war commentary is pretty  . Damaged soldier who can't even get a job in peace-time and would jump at a chance to return to war, the only way he knows how to live... war orphan who only wants to recover her father's body to give him a proper burial and get some closure... rear end in a top hat ruler who's profiteering off of stolen war spoils, etc.It'll be interesting to what the "peace" the world has finally claimed actually looks like as we progress. Also the huge monster at the beginning was real cool and so was Fayla the crazy grotesque unicorn.

If I was training a regiment of elite soldiers, I'd totally do something like that. Even if it didn't cause a red power-up. I am always almost up for some quality invocation action in my anime and such, so this has been pretty nice so far. So many shows don't bother with any sort of intrigue in this regard, so it is always refreshing to see one hopefully going in on it. Other fans of Awesome Talking would also get a kick out of the old Shadow Skill OVA and TV series among others---avoid the horrid 3D CG thing they made some years back just to spite the fans and twist the knife.

So was the protagonist a child soldier, or did the war end not long after he completed his training, or what? The characters in this show seem artificially young for how they act and what they can do(not that that is at all uncommon for anime or anything). Like, if you'd asked me to guess their ages I'd have told you numbers 4 or 5 higher than what they actually are according to the OP.

The siblings both have a shared background that explains quite a bit about why they both have those skills at their age. I'm actually quite curious about when they'll show it, since it set the mood for the manga nicely for me when I was reading the manga.

The war was only a year or two ago, right? If Tooru joined at around 16 (on the young end for a soldier, but not implausible), that would give him a decent amount of combat experience to work with.

I find her the most obnoxious part of the show so it's less that I'm curious and more that I wish there weren't things like this making her even more annoying.

Umm, her father didn't control the entire world. In other words, the war that lead to his death wasn't a rebellion, but multiple other countries banded together. The heroes returned home with their "prizes" after the war and that's where Chaika's looking for them. I'm not sure where the assumption that they're wandering around his former empire is coming from. As for the siblings and their skills, it's actually reasonably explained, somewhat depressingly so, but I'll wait and see if the anime covers their background before talking any more about that. Incidentally there was a wordpress site that was translating the actual LNs, and had basically finished the first 3, that I spotted last week, but it seems to be missing now.

I'm liking this more than the mediocre character art and premise led me to believe I would. The stand out scene for me was the fight scene with the swordsman on the bridge, it was really easy to follow what each character was doing and the fight flowed really well.

I watched the first episode out of curiosity because it got talked up so much, and was moderately interested by the male lead's abilities and the fight choreography so I watched another episode and it continued to provide those things. Other than that, the rest of the show is pretty blah to me. I was planning to just marathon the rest when it was out so that when there are more scenes like that stupid bread explosion thing I can skip through them.

Man, so far the only highlights for me were the fights and "Chaika? Chaika." I feel like the anime isn't conveying the setting really well - in FMA we knew who an alchemist is from almost minute one. After two episodes I still have no idea what Toru and his sis are, nor do I understand what their powers are, aside form glowing red. Also, the plot is Antigone. Or Castlevania 2.

Well we now know more of Chaika. Amnesiac, engineer and out of the country before the war. It was pretty smart of the father to have doubles to protect his daughter, but why didn't he just do that for himself to escape with her?

Yeah, put me in the Chaika is a magical clone camp. And I hate comparing this show to Scrapped Princess at every turn, but the show is making it really hard not to. Guy seems like a blatant rehashing of Zephyrous from Scrapped Princess. It's a touch distracting, honestly.

Never saw Scrapped Princess. Now I have to go look it up. Who'da thought running around town carrying a honking big casket would cause people to stare? I have to admit, the whole idea of the saboteur thingy is pretty interesting. They say the magic words and they become these uber-warriors. I'd like some backstory on that. Also, are the two really brother and sister? I get the idea they're not flesh-and-blood siblings. Are the uber saboteur's respected or not? Seems like not, but yet our hero-dude seems pretty darn capable. You'd think the guys chasing them would have a better respect for that particular warrior class. The ending of this particular episode was pretty lame, I think. Or stupid or both. Our hero-boy shows himself to be very capable and then does something like this? Also, I didn't quite understand what was going on with all that electricity.
