They didn't go into this, probably 'cause no one watching would get the joke, but that sleazy rockstar finance minister used to work for Valve, and is probably instrumental in the rise of the hat trade and the current crazy state of the Steam marketplace. Figures he would be in charge of saving the European economy.

And I really don't know how you fix the problem of the first world not wanting to pay a shitload of money for clothing/electronics and also not wanting to buy clothing/electronics made by child slaves, but sending gas station sushi to CEOs doesn't seem like it. It's kind of an issue that I don't see much solution to.

It's a problem that will solve itself once we can 3D print clothing

I don't think the pineapple story or the questions are that bad. 8 is pretty debatable though.

This seems more like a personality test than anything that should be a metric of a person's scholastic aptitude.

I'll have subtitles on literally anything that isn't animated. When you're not a native speaker it becomes really apparent how bad audio mixing is in most media. People are complaining about this stuff in the True Detective thread for instance. If you're used to subtitles you'll never even notice their presence and they arguably allow me to focus more on the movie because otherwise I'd be too preoccupied trying to hear what people are saying.

Subtitles rule.

Oh yeah, most translated subs are awful, I primarily use closed captioning

It was more like straight garbage. I tried to soldier through it because mental illness and disability are two of the most horrifically misunderstood things in American society. Yes, of course it's American society, it's a Last Week Tonight main story- granted, last week's was about Europe and it still sucked for reasons that I'm about to get into.

By the time John made a joke (well, more like a glorified cultural reference) to Lil Wayne, I just couldn't progress any further. Every joke on this show involves him repeating what a news anchor said 5 seconds ago in a clip and either yelling or making some pop culture reference. And during the main story, no matter what it is, it's 15 to 20 minutes of that plus a really preachy ending. The skit at the end of the refugee crisis main story is the perfect example of that- it's just two soap opera characters recapping what John spent an entire chunk of time talking about.

There is no effort put into Last Week Tonight anymore. It's less like The Daily Show or Stephen Colbert, and more like Jimmy Fallon or Family Guy. Unlike Fallon or MacFarlene, John Oliver has talent, but he clearly isn't using it. I'm just glad that Trevor Noah made a positive impact to The Daily Show and Colbert is about as sharp as ever, because if it weren't for them, the landscape for this kind of show would be barren. But hey, at least he isn't mugging for the camera with funny faces like Jon Stewart did. You don't want to waste time that could be spent making a joke about Taylor Lautner, after all!

I agree with you, maybe in less harsh terms. I don't think John Oliver is very funny (drink every time he repeats a joke in a louder tone after he just said it), main reason I watch the show is because he tends to highlight issues that you don't see highlighted anywhere else. But I often get kind of a nihilistic "everything is hosed and there's nothing you can do about it, I'm just telling you how things are" tone from his stories, which isn't always super enlightening, and definitely crosses into being too preachy even if I agree with him.

Either way I'm glad he's only doing one show a week, I don't think I could stomach more.

I'm Danish and I was initially annoyed with how poorly he represented that zoo story but the video was funny as gently caress so I ain't mad.

I live in Odense and I should've gone to see that drat autopsy, I could've been in the background of that footage!

Yeah.... why are y'all killing healthy animals though, or was that bit not fully true?

No, it's true, but it was a case of overpopulation and danger of inbreeding. The zoo tried to reach out to their international partners and associations and when no one would take the animals, what choice do they have? They can't put them back into the wild just like that. It's still lovely as gently caress but they for sure didn't want to do it and so they decided to make use of them for a scientific purpose instead. I haven't done any research but I would assume a lot of animals are euthanized like that across the globe.

I never gave Trevor Noah much of a chance, because before he somehow got the Daily Show, I was already familiar with him from a number of English panel shows, where he was a fine person, just not particularly funny at all. So it's not like he'd add much to this show I'd already fallen away from.

The weird thing about a lot of these shows is that while they ostensibly are comedy shows, it's pretty clear that comedy is not necessarily their priority, and they wind up being just slightly goofy pundits. Last Week Tonight for example, is genuinely meant to be informative outside of the ten minutes of goofy punditry at the beginning, and it genuinely is informative. It kind of feels disingenuous to call them just comedy shows.

LWT is also not particularly funny and I feel like the show would honestly benefit a lot from dialing it back.
