I'll take The Daily Show in John Oliver's voice, with way higher energy, no commercials, and no celebrity interviews. Sure. That was fun.

Stewart's "we're just comedians" has always been a cop out to avoid the scrutiny leveled at other political commentators. Stewart, Oliver, and Colbert are absolutely, 100% political commentators before anything else, they just use humor to get their point across.

It's a "cop out" to avoid having their jokes scrutinized as news reporting, or their interviews held to journalistic standards. It's unfair to hold them to those standards because they have the obligation to be funny - if they aren't funny enough to draw an audience, they will be fired, eventually. They are absolutely not "100% political commentators before anything else" because if they ever decided to be 100% political commentary, they wouldn't have a show. They use humor to get their point across, but they are comedians first, if only by contract and social role. They are political commentators, in a very general sense, but they're not journalists, and they are beholden to a different set of standards.

Israel is a specifically touchy issue for a few reasons:

1) there is an incredible amount of lobbying for letting Israel do their thing without obstruction and supporting them 100%. GOP overlord Sheldon Adelson is a one-issue guy, and guess what his issue is? He's got contemporaries in the other party, too.

2) The loudest and most commonly expressed criticism of Israel comes from crazy people. This also transcends parties. Ten years ago, the protest movement against Bush's wars often had a fringe element that was spreading angry rhetoric about Israel, and right wing blogs loved to take pictures of it. In 2010, an incumbent Republican thrown out by the Tea Party (I think it was Bob Bennett) described meeting with Tea Partiers and watching their racism quickly descend into Jewish conspiracy theories.

Of course, these two things are related. When there's a massive lobbying effort in favor of Israel, people with career hopes inside of the mainstream are not going to touch that issue if they can help it, and if you don't really care about the I/P conflict, being pro-Israel is a free way to boost your political career.

Being outright pro-Palestinian is generally political suicide in the US, on a national level, which is kind of crazy.

She's "still a thing" because no one actually gives a poo poo about political philosophy or ideology except as labels and symbols, and Ayn Rand has been grandfathered in as shorthand for I Like Capitalism. No one gives a poo poo about the contents of The Fountainhead just like no one gives a poo poo about the Bible.

People have been claiming to love Jesus and Mammon equally for a lot longer than Rand's been around.

Stupid poor people. They should be investing in those awesome anti-gravity boot-straps all the cool rich people are always talking about. Get a job and learn how to calculate expected utilities!

What we need to do is make savings and stable finances even harder for the poor and uneducated, this couldn't possibly have any unfortunate consequences. If we could drive some gambling addicts into bankruptcy, that's just icing on the cake.

It doesn't compared to any other state, they just have an open records law that let news outlets know about crazy poo poo that happens.

Florida does have a genuinely very high crime rate, they had the 4th highest rate of violent crime per capita according to the census, for example. According to these guys, it's got more cities on the "top 100 most dangerous cities in America" than any other state (11). http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/neighborhoods/crime-rates/top100dangerous/
