I remember watching Tessmacher beat Gail Kim at Bound for Glory 2012 (the one in Houston where they looked like a real company for a night), and I remembered thinking, "She's a bundle of nerves, winning the strap for the first time, at a giant PPV in her home town, it's probably very emotional, I can forgive her substandard wrestling and botches." Then another 18 months of Brooke Tessmacher, who has been wrestling professionally for six years and is on the skill level of an Eric Rowan, disabused me of any remaining goodwill I had for her. I can't believe she still has a job. No one should still have their job 8 years later if they never get any better at it.

What sort of deal is Lashley on? Is it some kind of low-rent Lesnar deal where he's paid a lump sum for X amount of appearances or a more traditional deal?

I don't have much of a problem with Brooke Tessmacher as long as Velvet Sky is still a prominent member of the division. You want to talk about "never getting any better after years in the business", she's public enemy number one.

I wouldn't really have a problem with either if the division was better in general. Tessmacher was slowly improving, I thought, and Velvet's got an act that is kind of synonymous with the Knockout division. I think there's room for that just like there's room for subpar male wrestlers who deliver in some other way. The problem obviously is that the two of the make up like a third of the division. If TNA added a few more talented Knockouts and made it overall respectable then the subpar talents wouldn't be a serious problem.

This has probably been said before a million times and might belong in the lady pro-graps thread, but why - in a world where we have approximately infinity gymnasts and cheerleaders who work hard, know how to learn a routine and already own their own leotards (an important plus for TNA) do they hire bombshell swimsuit/'fitness' models and try and teach them to wrestle, instead of hiring actual competent athletic women and teach them how to... I dunno, wear makeup and set women's rights back 20 years?

In fairness I don't think TNA has ever done that like WWE does. Velvet, Tessmacher, Taryn. They all were already in the business and had some training. Velvet had years of experience when the Knockout division started. Brittany and Madison Rayne were both experienced wrestlers before coming in too. In general TNA actually did the right thing and built the Knockout division on experienced talent from around the world. The problem is just that over the years TNA seems to have decided the more talented, experienced wrestlers aren't worth the investment so all they're left with is some pretty faces and a couple of talents who have no one to work with. The only time I can remember TNA bringing in an inexperienced model is with this girl who is with Knux who apparently got the gig through Christy Hemme. But even she is apparently a cheerleader who is training at OVW.

Maybe it was just a side by side comparison to Angelina Love but towards the end of the original Beautiful People run, Sky went from danger to herself and others to able to work a safe match. That's an improvement.

TNA will continue to prioritise asses over mat wrestling ability because they're a smaller company which is desperate to make whatever money they can, and asses bring in more cash more quickly than any wrestling match will. TNA tried having a respectable Knockouts division, and for a while it worked out well, but I doubt it really gave them much of a bump in revenue and ratings. Also, if we can assume that a TNA paycheque is somewhere south of the pay for stacking supermarket shelves, then yes, pictures of butts definitely does pay better than working in TNA. A friend of mine did that for a while and I was privy to how much she was being paid; to say it put shelf stacking to shame would be an understatement. Butts are big business, TNA is barely comparable to a part time summer job. edit: Tessmacher was poo poo, is poo poo and probably will always be poo poo. Gail, Tara, Kong and Sarita are the only women TNA's had who are actually good. They got Cheerleader Melissa and kept her in a manager role!

While it may not have given them a bump in revenue, it absolutely did in ratings. When Scott D'Amore was booking the division, their segments were pretty consistently the highest rated stuff on the show, or close to it.

I know they were the highest rated relative to the rest of the show, but I didn't think their overall ratings actually went up.

You can find better women's wrestling than the Knockouts all over youtube, honestly. And even if it's not better it's a lot less loving pandering. Back around 2010 when I followed TNA somewhat regularly, the Knockouts were all the same character too! The only break in the routine was Lesbian Ghost Winters. They really missed a chance when they didn't have the chick who saw her (Love?) try to tag in someone nobody else could see for a match Psykmoe fucked around with this message at 13:05 on May 9, 2014 |
