This comes on 4/9; the state already caved on 4/2 and modified the ban to be changed on 4/15.

As such the practical effect of this decision on the spread of COVID is minimal, especially with Newsom planning to open 'er up on June 15. The main effect of this granting of injunctive relief, where the court acted unusually swiftly (and it seems Roberts has failed to constrain his "colleagues" on the right), is such:

quote:

This is the fifth time the Court has summarily rejected the Ninth Circuit’s analysis of California’s COVID restrictions on religious exercise. See Harvest Rock Church v. Newsom, 592 U. S. ___ (2020); South Bay, 592 U. S. ___; Gish v. Newsom, 592 U. S. ___ (2021); Gateway City, 592 U. S. ___. It is unsurprising that such litigants are entitled to relief. California’s Blueprint System contains myriad exceptions and accommodations for comparable activities, thus requiring the application of strict scrutiny. And historically, strict scrutiny requires the State to further “interests of the highest order” by means “narrowly tailored in pursuit of those interests.” Church of Lukumi Babalu Aye, Inc. v. Hialeah, 508 U. S. 520, 546 (1993) (internal quotation marks omitted). That standard “is not watered down”; it “really means what it says.” Ibid. (quotation altered).
It was all about swatting the 9th circuit with a roll of newspaper, and the timing was a gesture towards said worshippers to grant them a victory to do their 4-persons-from-4-different-households bible study (which was their proposed activity in their original complaint from what I've read) on the last Sunday before the 4/15 changes by the state go into effect. It's all very symbolic at the end of the day.

eh. Marin has an extremely nice climate and great views, but it's actually pretty fuckin' poo poo to live. roads are garbage and small, no parking, rundown, its a pain to get anywhere with tourists, not a whole lot of variety in food (there's Sol Food in San Rafael/Mill valley which is great and a few other decent joints but still limited), pretty much have to drive to Novato or San Rafael to do any real shopping which is a real pain. for work in the bay you've got larkspur ferry (assuming you work in the fidi) or gotta suicidecommute bridge it. Sausalito used to be for mostly for the poors and it's infrastructure is real poo poo to non-existent; it's rents for regular old 60s apartments actually aren't much different than east bay. Also San Rafael is actually not that expensive either, on par with East Bay (actually may even be cheaper these days?).

sfd housing itself is real loving expensive but it's not like they're living some super loft high quality of life elite society. Peninsula/SV, Berkeley/Oakland Hills or LaMorinda Creek housing is pretty much just as expensive as a lot of marin housing. it's largely hoisted by their own petard but also a lot of geographical limitations.

e: One thing though is that they're more isolated from their actions and ideology. They bus/move their homeless over to San Francisco (they have more resources! it's the only right thing to do afterall); and they have limited amount of apartments (and very little section 8 or other bmr options) and rather few nearby "poor" cities where there's often a greater writ-large income inequality and then geographically more isolated and there isn't really room for RV/tent-favelas, so they have less crime compared to that of east/south bay and therefore streets stay cleaner (but are still rundown) when there's less "inequality poors" around. but it's otherwise not like there's a great pristine high-tech functioning infrastructure society with great qol that's barred off, it's pretty lovely in so many ways with really the only pros being "really nice views".

the extremes in marin are much more suburban than in SF or probably even the berkley/oakland hills. when driving for the not-a-taxis the only times i ever drove someone home who talked about driving their dad's porsche / letting their kid drive their porsche, it was in 1) the mid-peninsula and 2) west of 101 in marin

e: whereas the extremes of wealth in other places in the bay area usually just mean they're in a taller building with a more poorly treated doorman

I was eligible weeks ago and searched for appointments every day before and after work and finally made my appointment on the 2nd and the earliest appointment they had was tomorrow. I work 9 to 7:30 monday-saturday so I just don't have the time and energy to go searching around for appointments so I set up the earliest one I could find, which was through Kaiser. Everyone I know that works from home or has a car is already vaccinated. I get that it's most important to just get shots in arms, but it's frustrating that being an essential worker that has to work a lot of hours in-person has meant that i'm getting my first dose weeks behind when I could have gotten it.

I assume it was more that driving the 101 to the golden gate bridge during rush hour is a soul crushing commute and we desperately need to extend the SMART down the 101 into SF.

I live in Marin because my job is up here and it's a huge pain in the rear end seeing friends because public transit sucks up here. BART was supposed to be extended up here during the original build out in the 60, but Golden Gate Transit came up with a more or less fraudulent study to say it would be unsafe for bridge because they didn't want to lose our on the toll money
