Another day, another painting:

Made no real attempt to get the likeness down until way too late and it shows (reference) - ended up just doing my own thing with the face instead. Also couldn't resist going back and doing a few touch ups to one of yesterday's paintings.

We'll see how long I can keep up doing these daily - for now though I'm...dare I say...enjoying it? :woop:

Mega deal with it

I really need to get better at gesture drawings. They were my weakest point in figure drawing class and I stupidly didn't force the issue with my instructor to find out exactly what I should do to improve. Lately I've noticed that many of my drawings feel flat, stiff and lifeless. Every now and then there's a bit of life in them but since I intend to be an animator (:suicide:) that's not gonna cut it. So what exactly can I do to get better gestures? I'll post one per day and would greatly appreciate constructive critique if that's possible.

Try to focus on doing solid lines that follow the curvatures of the body, rather than scribbling to try and find the form. Remember, gesture is entirely about how something flows, rather than how it appears. Think about it like if you were trying to draw the gesture of a snake: you wouldn't bother trying to draw in the mouth, or make sure the scales are correct. Instead, you'd draw the pure flow of the snake, its S-shaped curve, to describe it. Human gestures are the same way, just with a few more parts. See how minimalistic you can get with your lines, so long as you can still generally tell what the person is doing.

I present to you the worst drawing in this thread:

Actually the point was to try to figure out the colors, and the hairstyle of the prone person. This is for a 3d scene, which should be a bit less intimate, but I screwed up. (In fact I think the woman will be pushing the spider away.) Both of the participants are female, and originally the spider was supposed to be patterned as if wearing a peach dress, like this:

but it was before the second person was introduced. Today I realized that there is a precedent for spiderwomen, therefore smudged out the the drawing. I'm still not sure if I'm that into the spiderman theme, but I couldn't come up with a good complement to the peach dress. Also I'm in doubt about the hair colors, but I think the longer hair on the bottom person would be good.

Suggestions?

P.S. Sorry for being a lame artist.

Don't make spider porn? You really didn't succeed at conveying the idea of "this isn't spider porn".

Is it just me, or do most models seem to have short hair?
I never really thought to much of it during the classes but looking back I can't remember a single one that didn't have their hair rolled up.

Is that part of the procedure?

I'd guess it helps you get better, uninterrupted lines of motion from the head to the neck to the shoulder and on down the back.

They would occasionally pose with cloth and bedsheets (and one time a gently caress ton of balloons) so I don't know. I'm guessing its so we could get a look at his/her neck.

(also I think gross_face.jpg would have some kind of thick new yorker accent for some reason)

These were all from the same model, but come to think of it, I think you're right. Personally, I have a really hard time with long straight hair, so I never complain. Earlier this week I drew a model with long frizzy hair that would stick up in random places, which was actually pretty fun to draw with charcoal.

I highly recommend Proko's gesture drawing videos. If you have access to the premium content, he has tons of 30s and 1m gesture drawing examples. There are enough examples in the premium content videos to give you a nice base for any number of poses. Sometimes I'll use them to warm up with before a figure drawing session or before "homework."

Months are stupid. I still haven't learned to draw faces a la Loomis, not to mention (nude) bodies. But if that's the theme, I'll be sure to contribute some smudgy dinosaurs, basking in sweet childhood nostalgia.
