After 5 rounds of preparing an intricate layer of spell defenses, a Red Wizard of Thay emerges from invisibility and casts a spell! You should have all played wizards!
\
:smugwizard:

Of course, casting from invis gives him advantage on his to-hit roll. With Ray of Enfeeblement. Targeting...hmm...probably that crazy monk that is splattering initiates.

Ray of Enfeeblement vs Folhapreta: 2d20k1+6 11. Oh poo poo, it missed! My wizard supremacy!

Angered at missing, the wizard points at someone and yells "That one, my pet! The one with the bong! Get him!"

A mutated wyvern flies up to Ganja and attacks while flying: darkenbeast flying multiattack vs Ganja: 1d20+4 10 2d6+2 7 1d20+4 9 2d4+2 8. The cloud of smoke must have fogged up its vision, because it misses twice! It lands next to Ganja.

Another one wings towards Montgomery, all alone as he is by the altar. darkenbeast flying multiattack vs Montgomery: 1d20+4 23 2d6+2 11 1d20+4 24 2d4+2 9. Much better. Good work, my pet. A hit for 11 and a crit for max of 10+crit bonus: 1d4 4 bonus. 11+10+4=25 damage.

Justice casts Bless, which affects himself, Pragor and Ganja; the rest of his team is past the 25' range.

A whole bunch of you are up, go!

Pragor smashes the gently caress out of his wyvern, killing it handily. The Thayan apprentices begin chanting prayers to the dark gods. Each one raises a knife above their victim and prepares to sacrifice them, reinforcing the Bloodgate! Just then, a lich appears at the foot of the Bloodgate. From invisibility, and protected by several mirror images, the lich casts a spell. It's a loving Cloudkill!

The cloud spreads out on the left side of the map, marked in green. Krag, Smash, Sandy and July: :rolldice: Make a Con save DC18 or take cloudkill initial damage: 6d8 22 poison damage. Saving deals only 11 poison damage. You get to take 6d8 damage, save for half, if you enter the cloud again or end your turn there.

Another red wizard appears on the left side! He goes for the maximum dickmove and casts Hold Person on Smash! :rolldice: Make a DC14 Wisdom save or be paralyzed for a minute! You get to save at the end of every turn to try to break out, but then again you will also take cloudkill damage every turn. Good luck with all that.

July marches out of the cloudkill and turns undead. Their saves: vs turn: 4#1d20+1 7 5 16 5. Three of them are instantly obliterated. :golfclap:

Because only Krag has to go now and there's only 1 wight on his side, I'm going to move the remaining wights up in init and do them now. Then Krag and 3 others can take their turns. Basically I'm consolidating init a bit so this runs smoother.

The remaining left-side wight attacks July: wight vs July, double longswords: 2#1d20+5 20 17 2#1d8+2 7 6. One hit for 7 damage.

And because they really hate paladins, the other 4 wights attack Justice.
4 wight longswords: 4#1d20+4 16 20 10 20 4#1d8+2 8 4 6 5. Two hits for 9 damage.

Aaaand finally 4 wight life drains: 4#1d20+5 9 11 23 9 4#2d6+2 5 8 9 12. One hit for 9 necrotic damage. Justice, you owe me a DC13 CON save. :rolldice: Fail and your HP maximum will be reduced by 9.

Montgomery is in pain, he would like to take the chance to get away from these enemies and heal, but he doesn't have the time. The Thayan Apprentice is going to sacrifice someone, and Montgomery can't let that happen. So he strikes like a viper with his twin short swords, the first takes out the nearby apprentice, so he turns the second on the nearby wyvern. Then as he is attacking he quickly releases a hummed song of healing that restores some of his injuries.

Short Swords, with Call to Battle, vs AC of Thayan Apprentice 2 and Mutated Wyvern 1 2#1d20+5+1d4 12 vs Apprentice and 23 vs Wyvern. For 2#1d6+3+1d6 14 piercing damage to the Apprentice, enough to kill it, and 8 damage to the Mutated Wyvern which is unfortunately not enough for that one.
Swift Action cast Healing Word on self 1d8+2 9 hp restored.

While everyone is busy dealing with impending death, your buddy Mennek takes action. Not the sort of action you might be hoping for.

Mennek breaks away from the battle and rushes toward the
Bloodgate, shouting, “Baazka, the way is open! Now help
me escape!

Hellish crimson flame ripples in the Bloodgate, and the
ghostly form of a huge winged fiend appears, towering over
Tarul Var. As the figure kneels, it gains more solidity, and the
broken blade of a sword can be seen jutting from a festering
wound in its chest.

Mennek surges past the astonished lich, Tarul Var, and in a
burst of crimson light disappears.

Baazka speaks again. “For those who care to listen,
I have a bargain for you. Pull the blade from my chest, and I
will shatter the Bloodgate and this pathetic lich for you.

The lich scoffs and says, "Bah! Not even the Golden Balls are that stupid!"

Alright, alright. As the pit fiend evaporates your hand is left grasping the hilt of an ancient magical weapon. The blade is broken off about half way up, leaving a jagged tip on a now dagger-length blade.

A scene flashes into your mind. A word, as well: Illydrael.

Looking down at your hand, the blade is shiny and new, a rune-etched bastard sword, and you are somewhere else. All around you an army of men battles demons and undead in the ruins of a shattered castle. With a prayer to Tempus on your lips, you look down at Illydrael and thrust it into the heart of the pit fiend. The blade leaves your hand as the fiend curls up, melts into a pile of sulfurous goo and vanishes with the sword.

The scene fades and another appears: you are now the fiend, reformed, amid the burning hells. Looking down at your chest, your black heart continues to beat around the broken blade, each heartbeat bringing pain and a burning desire for revenge. The Red Wizard Mennek appears, offering a bargain, a way to end the pain. You teach him how to build the Bloodgate. The wizards will use it merely for transportation, but for you it is more - a way back to the mortal world, where you can remove the blade without perishing.

The visions fade, returning you to the Bloodgate Nexus. Right next to a lich and a wizard that just did 8d8 damage to you.

Illydrael is now a dagger +1. Attuning to it (during a short rest) may reveal additional properties.

Yet where is that woman now? Tell me, in what heave does she reside? None of them. Because no God bothered to listen or care. If that is what you think it means to be a God, then you and all your teachings are welcome to do as that poor women did. And vanish from these realms forever.

Bro, you don't need to roll init every round. 5e uses one roll per person per fight. I took away the initiative numbers in the list below to reduce clutter, but the order is the same. Bro frees the hostage, but the nearby Thayan retaliates. He casts a Magic Missile as a level 2 spell, but he's just an apprentice so he rolls all 1's: 4 magic missiles: 4d4+4 8 damage.

Two of the hostages yell "Thank you! You saved us!" :allears: Two other hostages yell "NOOOooooooo!!" :commissar: The Bloodgate is visibly strengthened by their deaths, and the lich is better able to concentrate on the fight. With their grisly work done, the Thayans on the south end of the map rush to join the battle.

The cloudkill vapors drift of their own accord, rolling down the left-side altar stairs. The nearby Red Wizard carefully considers his situation. He is facing a pair of clerics that are buffed to the gills. Anything requiring a save is unlikely to succeed. So he goes for the sure thing, points at the super-buffed Krag Hack and a burst of Magic Missiles shoots from his finger. He casts it as a 4th-level spell, getting 6 missiles total. 6 Magic Missiles: 6d4+6 22 damage to Krag. The wizard then runs for safety by his lich master.

The lich - actually, you see 3 liches, thanks to mirror image - strolls on over next to Folhapreta. Then he casts another spell, dropping a brand-new cloudkill right between the wights and himself. The undead are immune, of course. His other cloud dissipates.

:rolldice: Justice, Pragor and Folhapreta are in the Cloudkill. cloudkill damage: 6d8 22 poison damage, make a DC18 CON save for half damage. :rolldice:

"Master, I can't breathe! Noo!" It seems that Wizard #1 is not immune. Red wizard's DC18CON save: 1d20+1 3 fails, 22 damage.

Finally, the wights. One swings twice at July (life drain, longsword): 1d20+5 13 2d6+2 10 1d20+5 13 1d8+2 10 missing. Two each go for Pragor and Justice:

Pragor's wights (2 drains, 2 swords): 2#1d20+5 23 15 2#2d6+2 10 12 2#1d20+5 9 9 2#1d8+2 8 9. Two drains hit for 18 damage total. Pragor makes 2 DC13 CON saves: 2#1d20+2+1d4 19 21, so he doesn't permanently lose HP.

Justice's wights (2 drains, 2 swords): 2#1d20+5 19 19 2#2d6+2 7 11 2#1d20+5 21 7 2#1d8+2 9 3. One hit for 9 damage.

Tarul Var laughs and waves his hand at Krag. As a reaction, he casts counterspell. The Cure Wounds fizzles and does nothing. Krag remains at 10HP.

When the light turns green, you go. When the light turns red, you stop. But what do you do when the light turns blue with orange and lavender spots?
