Dennis Stamp, 67, who beat cancer which he was told was terminal, will be taking his first booking since 1996 (when he refereed the Bret Hart vs. Terry Funk match chronicled in the movie “Beyond the Mat”) when he does a show on 8/30 in Dundee, Scotland. Stamp has gained some popularity in that country as he’s been a weekly phone guest on Scotland’s One Wrestling show, telling stories about his career. Stamp was a state high school champion in Minnesota, who placed 6th in the NAIA national championships from Concordia College in 1968. He turned pro and was a well respected journeyman who did some police work for circuits. He did well in a number of territories, most notably in places like California, Texas, Oklahoma and British Columbia. His best success was working for the Funks in Amarillo, and he ended up settling in the city. During the 80s, he was regular enhancement talent on both AWA and WWF television shows before largely retiring in 1988.

jumping with five pound dumbbells is one thing, but the more i think about it, the more i think jumping up and down on a trampoline with a barbel crammed with 45 lb plates or "caddies" as the boys call them, trying to do heavy squats, seems to be a good idea

Both. A lot of wrestlers from his era were trained to be both in case people missed towns. Jake Roberts started as a ref.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter posted:

Dennis Stamp, 68, a journeyman wrestler in the 70s and 80s who settled in Amarillo, perhaps most famous to 90s fans for his role in “Beyond the Mat” as the aging wrestler waiting for the phone call to ring for a booking ten years after the phone calls stopped coming, just refereed a show this past weekend in Scotland. In the movie, Stamp ended up being the special referee for a match with WWF champion Bret Hart vs. Terry Funk which was, at the time, billed as Funk’s last match in Amarillo (he’s had several since of course). Stamp was diagnosed with cancer in 2011, stage four, and it was believed to have been terminal at the time and he was believed to only have a few months left to live. A promotion, the SWE, promised him that if his heath allowed it and if he beat cancer, they would bring him in. Stamp apparently now has a clean bill of health.
