Cleanthony "Clean Anthony" Early, Elfrid and some Euro nonsense are likely the best of the crop, but the NBA should bow their heads in shame at the astounding recent surge in silly NFL names. Jadeveon Clowney, Barkevious Mingo, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, this draft got nothing on 'em. Still, it's a shame those young football men will all have traumatic brain injuries that ruin their lives before 2030.

Dante Exum's name being silly or sick as hell will depend on his play--Travis Outlaw is a shameful waste of a name, but Damian Lillard edit makes it work.

Dante Exum is a great great name. Makes him sound like a renaissance writer who wrote with a latin name to sound prestigious. Julius Randle is a great name too, that's a name that rings out "NBA POWER FORWARD."

My list for this year outside of the first round guys that we're used to reading:
Khem Birch
Thanasis Antetokkounmpo, we already know his last name, but what a first name
Fuquan Edwin
Roscoe Smith - Good 70s name
Okaro White
Bogdan Bogdanovic
Alessandro Gentile
Adin Vrabac

Is Glenn Robinson III still considered a high potential player? He disappeared in so many games, and he really needs to tighten his handle, and learn to make 3s. Yet he remains a long athletic wing.

According to the lottery machine, Detroit has a roughly 20% chance of losing its pick tonight. I guess we'll see what fortune holds for Stan Van Gundy. I'm sort of terrified that the SVG era will bring terrible drafting and eschew the folksy combo guard wisdom of Joe Dumars.

Are there any cool Tony Mitchell-esque players who will be around at 38 for Detroit. I'm holding out hope for a Lance Stephenson or something of that nature.

I'd love to see them trade into the middle 20s of the first round and take Adreian Payne.

Thanasis Antetokounmpo and PJ Hairston are intriguing at 38. What do yall say?

That super soft easy facility around the rim reminds me of Greg Monroe, with athleticism and the ability to jump

Is lateral quickness tests the best way to figure out if the guy's back is hosed? I watched a fair amount of Dwight in his Lakers run and he seemed alright on the first jump up, but he couldn't move side-to-side and his second jump for rebounds was slow, late.

It's not the end all test, but yes it's a good marker. Because back injuries really hurt when they're torqued laterally and you need to be seriously doped up to play through that pain.

Would Embiid be able to work as a 4 if the team drafting him already had a traditional center?

Because if the Cavs are dumb enough to give us their pick for Love I'm curious about if he'd be on their radar for the pick.

He probably could, but why would you waste a potentially great player at a scarce position that way

Yes. They lack rim protection. Dieng looked really good over the last quarter of the season, though. It should mean they lose less close games next year, at least if he keeps it up.

The Bucks taking Wiggins will be awesome, that team will have so few basketball skills. Imagine the Brandon Knight, Wiggins, Giannis, Larry Sanders, Henson unit. Wowwweeee, I want to be a Bucks fan. If Dumars gets the Pelicans job I'll have to root for three teams.

Cleveland's GM told a local writer that "JABARI HAS BEEN ON THE TOP OF OUR BOARD ALL YEAR LONG."

Is Wiggins looked at as being just a physical freak with no actual basketball skills tho? I thought he was pretty skilled at alot of things, and the athleticism puts him over the top.

He's not a great dribbler, he's not a great passer, he's only sometimes a shooter. He'll probably learn everything, but it's going to be fun to see him like the shaky baby horse his first time around.

I don't think he's a good enough ball handler to be a star, but he's a very good shooter and athlete who should be a good role player and can probably start for a lot of teams. He's falling mostly because he was a gently caress up off the court and got booted out of school.

Where do you think he'd go if he'd have been a good school boy and performed to expectations?

This is a really great year for initials, and especially initials with a final J.

TJ Warren, CJ Wilcox, PJ Hairston, KJ Mcdaniels, CJ Fair. A bumper crop of initial named boys!

Jones is a very talented player that doesn't get minutes because brooks is an awful coach who would rather play Butler and Fisher rather than young more talented players like Jones. Same goes for Roberson

I don't know if talented is the right word. He's sort of like Durant in that he's a really great athlete, super quick and very springy, for his size. But he lacks the incredible basketball skill of Durant. He still needs to learn his one NBA thing. If he could learn to shoot, he'd be a useful player. If he learned to finish at the rim, he'd be a useful player, etc etc.

Rule number 1 of the NBA draft is DO NOT DRAFT THE MAN LABELED "MOST NBA READY!!" He will be a bust or at very best, a mediocre player.

I think I'm souring so heavily on Marcus SMart just because I can't take the mega-dullard version of the Laker fan "Byron Scott is going to turn Marcus Smart into Chris Paul, or maybe Kyrie Irving at worse" narrative.

Small player progression seems harder to pick than that of larger players. Maybe because little (in relative terms) guys are necessarily good athletes with lots of skills? So that making it work despite shortcomings seems to happen more often?

Calling Mario Chalmers a "hit" when it projected him to be the fourth best player in the draft (and better than Derrick Rose, among others) seems, uh, a little generous.

I wouldn't draft Embiid in the Top-10 still. Recovering from Sports injuries fucks up the other systems in your body too, from either over or under use. I have no doubt that he'll be working as hard as possible to recover, but for someone as raw as him I could see it taking a year and a half or so just for him to get back to the level he is now.

You're making a huge gamble on him being an immediate difference maker when he finally plays if you take him.

If someone drafts Julius Randle or Marcus Smart over Embiid they should get fired immediately

Listening to Bill Simmons' podcast with Chad Ford just made me sit with the "Who farted?" face for about an hour. Ford made a couple of decnet points but Simmons never sounds like he knows what he's talking about, and he never does with drafts. He watches the NCAA tournament and makes a lot of dumb theories based on body language that he thinks he sees. That's literally all that he goes on. He didn't know anything about Vonleh, which made me laugh to myself. Of course you don't. He wasn't in the tournament. He then declares Vonleh the stinker of the top 10 because he couldn't will his team into the tournament or whatever. Ford thinks every prospect in the top 15 is a hall of fame player. As the list goes down to picks 5-10 he gives even more compliments to those guys than those in the top 5 somehow. Marcus Smart is going to become Gary Payton. Elfrid Payton is just a leader who will straighten the Sacramento Kings out. He said almost nothing about Elfrid's actual playing ability. That whole podcast was a mess. Bill Simmons is in love with Aaron Gordon and his reasons are baffling. I heard a) He tries really hard, b) he's a "gym rat", and c) "If you put him in the NBA Finals this past season then he could play with those guys." What in the gently caress does that even mean? Bill Simmons NBA Draft Mode is so annoying. I hate hearing it but at the same time I love it as well because it infuriates me and I secretly love to get mad over everything I guess.

The worst thing about Simmons on The Draft is his assertion that agents only want their clients to go to, A. The Lakers, because they're the Lakers, and B.Boston, because... a historical legacy of racism... to learn under the wing of Kelly Olynyk?? He never quite gives a reason. It's the same way that the Obvious destination for every superstar becomes Boston.

What I can't figure out is if Chad Ford was saying that Embiid has some sort of hepatitis, some type of anemia, and a bone density problem, or was only saying that it's relatively common for prospects from Africa to have all of those issues, without them necessarily affecting performance.
It's very curioso.

Allegedly Toronto and Memphis are working on Salmons + #37 for Prince + #22. How finished is Prince? Because this seems real good from Toronto's side.

That looks like a salary dump. Prince has flashes where he's still a good passer and defender, but they're flashes. He's mostly done. His shot is hopelessly broken and he misses layups.
