I think we should let some more people do guest reviews for the rest of season 3, seeing how he's going to have to suffer through this show for another 11 months or so. Although I'm mainly saying this because I'm wondering if I could write a review of this show without swearing as much as Occ does.

axeil posted:

I can't NOT keep watching LMS even if I wanted to

The terms of the first toxx, the one that triggered then presumably un...triggered was based around betting on commmunity getting renewed; once community was cancelled I requested deadpool deliver his end of the mod challenge and he made me watch season 2 of LMS

Season 3 got covered cause a nice goon was willing to cover the costs of my av/name change, which I then toxxed (more of a fair trade really) to cover LMS season 3 to pay back for

So right now toxx 1 is completed and I'm in the middle of toxx 2, which was wholly independent of community getting renewed

In fact the only thing that the community renewal changed was triggering toxx 3, and I guess demanding deadpool recompense me for that month I my life I spent watching LMS season 2

Hcreight p much has the right of it, I was probably gonna cover s4 anyways simply because people seem to really enjoy this feature and it's one of the few threads in TVIV that isn't goddamn terrible

But to answer your question directly I was able to pull off making what should be a joyous occasion for me, especially considering my love of community, into a bittersweet one

Last Man Standing
"Elfie"
Season 3, Episode 11

There are some things you should know about me. For one, I loving love Christmas. I unashamedly, unapologetically adore Christmas and all of its trappings. I love the wintertime air, I love the smell of peppermint. I love eggnog and lights and that brisk winter chill. I love snow, I love Santa, I love Christmas songs. I love everything and anything about Christmas, it's my by-far favorite holiday and everything about it makes me happy.

I'm also a big-time atheist, and (in case you couldn't tell) a very lefty, socialist liberal. I don't really acknowledge the more religious aspects of Christmas explicitly, but I respect them: heck, I adore some of the more faith-based Christmas music, and there's a sort of respect-cum-envy I have of the truly devout, since it involves an emotion I'm incapable of feeling: purity of faith is fascinating to me.

So it's with all this I say: There is no loving war on Christmas. Jesus loving Christ there is no goddamn war on Christmas. If you actually believe there is a war on Christmas, from the lefty liberal atheists of which I am one proudly, then you are a goddamn idiot. You are the stupidest loving idiot to ever dumb, ever. If you believe, in a country chock-full of Christians, that a, there is anything but a minority (and a tiny, tiny loving minority) of people who don't celebrate Christmas, and b, of the tiny, tiny minority of people who don't celebrate Christmas there would be a contingent of people actually mad enough about the concept of the holiday to organize some sort of concerted effort to remove references to it, you deserve to be institutionalized on account of being too retarded to be able to breathe without assistance. This "war on Christmas" doesn't loving exist, and in fact if you want to blame anyone for any form of a hostile action against Christmas, don't blame the (non-existent) cabal of Jews/blacks/atheists/liberals who are somehow removing every mention of Christmas outside of literally loving everywhere in America when it's December, blame the loving corporations who have manipulated your holiday into a literally months-long brazen celebration of commercialism and unbridled spending on material goods.

But either way, there is no loving war on Christmas. Just to be clear. It doesn't loving exist. It is a fantasy. Okay? Okay.

This episode is about the war on Christmas. As such I absolutely hated this episode for about half of its total runtime, as to twist this fantasy, non-existent, unreal "problem" and make it logically palatable they had to make Ryan even more of a caricature of a liberal than usual, which is quite honestly saying loving something. We again see the Ryan that's so loving obsessed with his stupid pet political causes that it causes one to wonder how he functions throughout the day without bursting into flame from liberal self-righteousness, and it's downright intolerable by now.

The crux of the episode is focused on Boyd, namely the difference between how the Baxters treat the Christmas holiday and how Ryan and Kristin do. And, again, Ryan is the spokesperson of the "War on Christmas" (again- doesn't exist), wherein he insists to Boyd not to believe in Santa and a good or naughty list or any of that "bunk". Instead, Ryan insists on holiday celebrations so parodically tolerant as to become irritating, as he insists on teaching Boyd all about other cultures' versions of winter celebrations. It gets to the point where I wanted to punch Ryan in his liberal face, because Jesus Christ shut the gently caress up you giant spergy nerd.

Aside from the general irritation of Ryan's self-righteous diatribes preaching tolerance and his smug, self-satisfied "lessons", the problem with the main plot is one of focus. In attempting to show how terrible and dangerous the soldiers in the, again, completely fake and not real "War on Christmas" are, the LMS writing staff fumbled the character motivations of Ryan entirely. He flits between legitimate and illegitimate reasons to not bring up Boyd within the traditional American Christmas culture with no real rhyme or reason whatsoever: In one scene, for instance, he insists on telling Boyd the truth about "Elfie" (an elf doll that can "watch and report to Santa if Boyd is being naughty or nice") because he doesn't want Boyd to just be good for material reward, then states that he doesn't want Boyd to believe fantasies, then bizarrely tells Boyd about a European winter solstice tradition. These are three completely separate thoughts, two of which are completely contradictory, with one totally legitimate reason to not want your kid to buy into every aspect of a holiday tradition.

It's like the LMS writing staff, in attempting to make Ryan into the evil liberal, ended up making Ryan look borderline schizophrenic as he had to parrot every strawmen opinion that conservatives think liberals hold about the holidays, and in doing so completely dilute their own argument; even worse, this "throw poo poo at a wall to see what sticks" strategy accidentally unearths a bunch of totally reasonable arguments from Ryan about why one should keep their kid away from certain, negative aspects of the Christmas season. This is the definition of being hoisted on your own petard.

The episode, overall, is saved by the downright bizarre revelation that Ryan's issue with Christmas stems from his own lovely Christmas experiences with his family, which hasn't engendered any hatred of the holiday; far from it, he wants Boyd not to have faith in a fat cloud-man with magic presents, but in his own parents to provide for him a holiday experience that Ryan's parents were unwilling to create. It's a strangely sweet end to the episode that bizarrely works.

The B-plot of this episode sucks, involving Mandy magically learning the meaning of Christmas from an of course clever little ethnic girl who misses her dad, who was, shock of shocks, deployed to Afghanistan at the time. I bet you can't guess how this ends! I'll give you a hint: it involves a Christmas present just large enough to hold an adult human male.

Overall, this episode is just a straight up mess. The first half of the episode is spent on the rantings from Ryan, Official Christmas Hater, and the second half is spent on the strangely resonant Ryan and Mike heart-to-hearts. It completely undercuts its own message of there being a War on Christmas- which is fake as gently caress, seriously, the War on Christmas has never existed ever.

It's clear, too, that this whole episode was supposed to be about the people waging war in the non-existent and never existed War on Christmas, as the final scene of the episode, a Mike Baxter vlog, is all about how you have to SUPPORT OUR TROOPS because they, you see, wage actual war for us, the US, so people have the freedom to wage War on Christmas- which has never happened and never will happen. To be clear though- I waged war for the US in Iraq, and at zero point in time while deployed was I ever doing it so my atheist pals could try and kill Christmas, which incidentally, just so you know, has never happened at any point in American history ever. Ever. Never ever ever. In fact, I can confidently say that the LMS writing staff, showrunner, and Tim Allen can go gently caress their collective selves for turning whatever amount of sacrifice I made into a lovely non-real conservative fearmongering dogma of an non-issue that has never negatively affected someone outside of their crazy heads, ever.

I'm still giving this episode a C though. Again- I really really love Christmas, and they stuck the gently caress out of the landing.

Grade: C

Random Thoughts:
  • Eve spends the entire episode loving with her nephew for no discernible reason, and it's hilarious.
  • In case you were unaware, the War on Christmas is not real at all.
  • Vanessa: "Aw, that's too bad. I thought Boyd would have really had fun with that." Eve: "Yeah, real fun: A doll that sits and judges you."
  • Mike: "I think it's refreshing, just having Christmas rammed down our throats."
