A quintessential being known throughout the Realm as the 'Dungeon Master'. :rolldice:

The bustling desert city of Wati is near bursting with excitement. Adventurers from every corner of the Inner Sea region have assembled here beneath the hot Osirian sun to explore the tombs of the city’s necropolis, waiting only to be assigned their first sites for exploration. Surrounding the participants, the public has gathered to observe the ceremony as well. There is a festival-like quality in the air, and numerous street vendors are hawking goods and refreshments to participants and spectators alike. Some merchants have even brought what can only be considered adventuring gear to sell as last minute convenience items to explorers, while others advertise that they’ll buy recovered treasures and antiquities from those who visit their establishments.
In front of the imposing edifice of the Grand Mausoleum, an immense awning has been erected between decorated pillars in the market to provide shade for the priests of Pharasma overseeing the lottery. Beneath the awning, two urns sit atop a table elevated a few feet above the ground on a wooden stage constructed for the event. The high priestess of the Grand Mausoleum, Sebti the Crocodile, sits behind the table, while two acolytes confer with her at either side.

Numerous adventuring groups stand in small clusters near the stage, made up of multiple nationalities and races. Most keep to themselves, but some teams engage in quiet conversation with other teams, mostly speculating about what they’ll likely face in the necropolis.

You’ve come to Wati for your own reasons, but more importantly you’ve come alone. The Church will not accept solo entries into the Necropolis and you find yourself on the lookout for a team with available space. Walking amongst the various adventurers you chat some of them up hoping to find an open spot on a team.

Cryptfinders

“Sorry, we’ve traveled from the Inner Sea to be here and our money is tight. We can’t sacrifice anymore shares to take on new party members. Best of luck to you though!”

Daughters of the Desert

“Normally we’re in favor of adding more to our sisterhood, but our twins recently did some divining and had a bad omen about ‘taking on the burden of others.’ So unfortunately we’re not accepting any new members.”

Dog Soldiers

“Why can’t you join our group? Let me list the reasons. 1: You’re not a Halfling. 2: You don’t have a dog. 3: You’re not a bloody Halfling!”

Sand Scorpions

“Sure, you can join our team. I have a very special position you can fill on my...hey, where are you going?”

The Scorched Hand

“Are you a worshipper of Nethys? Oh, you’re not…sorry, we don’t like to let ‘outsiders’ into the group.”

And with that you are left alone as the various groups go off to complete their registration. But alas, you spot 3 other individuals in the same situation as yourself. You may all be strangers but perhaps together you can find enough common ground to breach the Necropolis and come out the other side stronger, wiser, and a bit richer!

I know people are still working on character refinement which is fine. Once you feel your character is properly finalized for the game, just post the updated character in the OOC thread. In the meantime let’s get introductions rolling along.

Also those with appropriate skills may make their Knowledge: History checks to gain some detailed information about the history of Wati, and those with Diplomacy may make a gather information check to get more details on this event.

Also feel free to bookmark this link for all your future rolling purposes (thanks to Anias).

Diplomacy for Gathering Information: 1d20+7 13

Tigi wanders the square gathering what news she can from the other groups, and then stops to consider the other strangers with no companions. As she walks, a dustdevil plays with the long robes of her traveler's gear, pushing them back and forth. She steps calmly through it, as if it were an everyday occurence, her eyes tightening briefly. Seeing the others with little luck, she moves towards them to introduce herself.

"I am Tigi, of the Elven Lorehomes. I have traveled a fair distance to be here, and now they tell me I should have brought assistants and clerics if I wanted to be considered. Petty bureaucrats are the same the world over it seems. Rules, rules, rules, always more rules in the way of things which must be."

She nods disgustedly towards the dias.

"As you appear to be similarly disposed, let us see a small grace in our inconvenience and their tediousness. There is no rule that bands must be long standing only that they must be of sufficient size. We might then band together now, beneath the watchful sun, and thus gain entrance to the necropolis. There is light to be spread, and I am sure from the look of us that we might all be of help to one another. Will you come with me into that dark place, and bring it's secrets to the light?"

Aspexia is wandering around the market as if in a daze, stopping to jot down notes and quick sketches into her journal before moving along. The wizard is wearing a long white robe that almost touches the ground, complete with veil and hood - secretive and cooling in the heat of Wati. She approaches several of the groups but is rebuffed, quietly nodding and murmuring "thank you" before moving along.

When she is approached by Tigi, the tiefling looks around in surprise, her eyes flashing red. "Me? Oh, me! Uh, yes! I am happy to meet you all." Aspexia extends a gloved hand to shake hands with the others. "Aspexia of Absalom. Pathfinder and scholar. This place is amazing - it's just like I read about in Vael Morral's Guide to the South. So is there like a line or something to get in? I can't wait to see what relics we might find!"

Trailing not far behind Aspexia, and making rather rude gestures at the Sand Scorpions, Raziya takes a moment before she responds to Tigi's offer. First, she can't help but jump in on the introduction as well. "Raziya Redalley, it's a pleasure. I'm here to keep an eye on Asp, make sure she doesn't get bit by one." Grinning at her own rather terrible pun, she throws her arm around Aspexia's shoulder, completely violating her companion's personal space. Then doing the same to Tigi's as well, she leans forward, whispering to her conspiratorially. "And just between you and me, I know a guy who knows a guy. We've gotten our tickets pulled, right? That's what matters, not jumping through hoops for six months to get all the papers in the right order."

"I wanna see what's down there just as much as you two, believe me." Releasing the two other women, Raziya turns her gaze this way and that. "Unfortunately, we're definitely going to need at least one more. Some big, buff, burly guy who looks like he could get in a fight with a bullette and win. Either of you guys see anyone like that?"

Akamur

Working his way through the crowd, Akamur stops at many of the formed groups asking if they need a guide for the lesser expeditions in the area. Coming across no one who doesn't intend to enter the Necropolis, you can see his face become more and more angry with these companions that all want to dive headfirst into the new expedition.

Finally reaching those that don't have a group, his head hangs low as he says, "I guess you three are also heading into the Necropolis, aren't you? I better come with you then, it seems I will need to learn about it."

As the buzz from the various groups of adventurers dies down, Sebti the Crocodile rises to address the crowd. She seems surprisingly young to hold such a distinguished position, but she has a confident air of authority. Before speaking the crowd is called to silence as an invocation to the Lady of Graves begins. Once the ceremony is complete, Sebti finally speaks.

"Let the lottery begin! Although many of you have requested specific sites to explore, we must leave these matters to fate. The Lady of Graves is a far better judge of destiny than we of this mortal sphere. The gates of the Necropolis will open at sunrise tomorrow. Use this evening to prepare yourselves for the task ahead. Let these rules guide you in your endeavors in this holy place: remember how this came to pass, every slave's hut is a memorial, and honor the departed. May you go with the Lady's blessing!"

Having finalized your team you walk up to the Grand Mausoleum and present your registration. It costs you nothing and your team is officially registered under the name "The Deserted." You're presented with a wooden scarab figurine painted blue. You see the Priest reach into a vase and pull out a match figurine with piece of paper tied to the bottom. Opening it up it simply says "Tomb of Akhentepi."

You're given a rough map of the Necropolis with a single key area highlighted, the Tomb you've been assigned. As you're examining the map one of the women you spoke with suddenly rushes up to you, her face painted with excitement and concern.

"I apologize for my curt behavior earlier, but I was wondering if you had been assigned the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye?"

@Arivia: From your Knowledge: History check you know that Wati is old...really old. And something terrible happened in its past.

@Anias: With your Diplomacy check you find that there's just a strong buzz around the city regarding the opening of the Necropolis. Most excited of all are the merchants who are just drooling to get their hands on the treasures recovered by the various adventuring parties.

Determined to get fed and figure out what you're gonna do for accommodations, you follow the throng of people to a large tavern called the Tooth & Hookah. There many of the adventuring parties have rented out rooms and suites for multiple weeks and are using it as their base of operations due to it's close proximity to the Necropolis.

Let me know what kind of rooms you want (simple rooms are the ones on the right, suites are on the left) and how long you'd like to rent them for. Rent comes with 3 meals a day, and you'll be provided a party table like the rest of the adventuring groups.

Waking up bright and earlier you head to the entrance to the Necropolis, eager to get on with your investigation of the Tomb of Akhentepi.

Coming up to the gates you see that many groups have already entered, and already some are being carried out on stretchers or body bags. It seems what lurks beyond the walls hasn't faded away over the last two thousand years. No, instead it's been resting...and waiting.

Following the directions on the map you back your way to the back section of the Necropolis. From some of the temples and estates you hear a variety of screams and yells, but knowing the rules there's nothing you can do. You keep to your mission and finally make it to the tomb.

A rectangular stone mausoleum sits alone in what appears to have once been an actual cemetery. The trunks of a few dead trees poke out of the sand around the tomb, and a hot breeze whistles through their desiccated branches. A set of massive stone double doors is affixed to the northern side of the structure, beneath a facade bearing the likeness of an Osirian man. Windblown sand is heaped around the crypt, partially burying the doors that lead within.

Pulling off her pack and fishing through it, Raziya can hardly hide her eagerness. Oh, sure, people died. People always die. But more importantly, this is a chance to prove that she knows what she's doing, that she can pull her own weight on the expedition. Once her tools are out, she shoves her pack, as well as her shortbow and arrows, into the hands of the big, strong barbarian. "Hold this for me, I overpacked."

Without waiting for a reply, she readjusts the shield on her arm and the blade at her belt, and very slowly eases her way to the door. It takes her several minutes of appraising and looking before she's even started tracing the runes on the door with her fingers. There's a uncharacteristically methodical cautiousness to her actions as she examines the door, but at the same time, a spark in her eyes. This is what she was born for.

There are also telltale traces of mortar along the seam and jamb that has since crumbled or been chipped away, indicating the door were meant to be sealed not intended to be opened again.

You also see the signs of a crowbar or similar tool having been inserted between the doors at some point in its history.

In your best estimation opening these doors is going to be a pain in the rear end. Before even attempting to open them your team will need to spend the better part of an hour clearing away the sand, and then you'll need one heck of a strength check to open the doors.

An examination of the faces carved in stone in the corner reveal that they are special place holders for torches and a detect magic reveals that they have an extremely faint aura of Evocation on them.

The door and faces are not trapped. Your engineering check reveals that the wheel against the south wall is 10 feet in diameter and 6 inches wide, and by your estimation probably weighs 5,700 pounds.

You think that all four of you can fit together for the purpose of moving the wheel, but it's going to be difficult because of the lack of hand holds to gain leverage.

Working together you put your backs into it and after a few minutes the stone wheel finally starts to turn, but just barely and very slowly. By the time you have a five foot space cleared to the next section sweat is pouring down your brow and your chugging water from your water skin as the heat makes the work even more intensive.

Walking into the next section of the tomb, you find this square room is starkly devoid of any marking or adornment. In the center of the chamber's floor, a square shaft drops straight down into darkness. A faint musty order rises from the pit. A single piton has been hammered into the stone floor by the northeast corner of the pit, and a dusty length of rope dangles from the piton into the darkness of the shaft.

Stealth: 1d20+5 10
Akamur Perception: 1d20+1 9
Aspexia Perception: 1d20+2 18
Twig Perception: 1d20+1 21
Raziya Perception: 1d20+9 10

Looks like everyone but Akamur will be participating in the surprise round.

As you enter the next room you hear clicking and odd clattering on the sand in the previous room. You turn around just in time to see a ghost scorpion attempting very poorly to approach your group quietly and unseen.

"Creepy Crawly! Sneaky Stalky! Creepy Crawly! Stealing up on us, with a stinger!"

Twig does not like bugs, as her companions can tell by her high pitched squealing as she moves to the far side of the room, clambering over them in her haste to put distance between herself and it.

You think you have the wherewithal to figure out my puzzle vagina?
Raziya
"Step back and let it come to us!" Raziya shifts her weight onto her back foot, and lifts her rapier, keeping it at the ready.

Ready an action to make a melee attack on the scorpion as soon as it comes within melee range.
