This is one of the best things I've heard in a game Elizabeth, from BioShock Infinite, composed by Garry Schyman ---- Taking it back a few years, the original Tenchu: Stealth Assassins had fantastic music for every stage, which played prominently over any action that was happening on screen. Tenchu 2 was my favorite in the series but they did something really weird, they removed the music in every scenario but cinemas and boss fights, and said tracks were usually only a minute long at the most. Anyways, there is an entire soundtrack for T2. The US version of Tenchu: SA had a few extra levels, both with amazing songs. When I was a teenager my dad asked me to burn him a CD of this music so he could play it in his college classrooms while students worked, so it definitely has appeal outside of games. The Composer for all Tenchu music is/was Noriyuki Asakura. The songs are all hybrids of eastern and western styles, and they all really speak for themselves. "God of a Heretical Religion " - infiltrate the manji cult cure the princess execute the corrupt minister initially North America only cross the checkpoint initially North America only training mission and a few from Tenchu 2 Kengeku (boss fight theme) Rasetsu (boss fight theme) Mugen (end credits) ---- BeanpolePeckerwood fucked around with this message at 03:28 on Jun 30, 2014 |

Austin Wintory (the guy who wrote the score to Journey, which has the distinct honor of being the first game score to be nominated for a Grammy) generated some news recently. In the past month, some shenanigans around union rules came to a head and he made this video about what's going on. Speaking of Journey, here's its entire soundtrack complete with composer's commentary via annotations. If you haven't heard it yet, you should!

I might as well mention a few more favorites. The Dustforce OST, oh my god. It's incredibly tranquil and relaxing, and fits perfectly with the game's aesthetic while also making sure the player doesn't end up turning into a beast of pure rage after the thousandth failed SS attempt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXH5G_bqrlc Also, Tetrisphere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRMN7GzZ3ic Gamma Nerd fucked around with this message at 03:14 on Nov 18, 2014 |

Super Meat Boy's OST (composed by Danny Baranowsky) is fantastic, which it needs to be in a game where one may spend hours at a time trying to beat their best time on a single level. While it is great on its own, the best tracks probably have to be the ones that aren't actually in the game. The special edition soundtrack includes (among other things) extended versions of three tracks that appeared in the game. Namely, Battle of Lil Slugger Extended Cut, Betus Blues Retro Extended Cut, and Can o' Salt Extended Cut. Even without the extended tracks, the soundtrack is amazing. It Ends, Dr. Fetus' Castle, and Forest Funk being just a few examples.

"Nerdcore" sucks, but every rule has an exception and I think the exception to this one is the Adventures of Duane and Brando, as well as their various solo work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ulz04zysHyw I'm not a person with good musical education but I think the best way to phrase it is they're just more talented then other people who try to do 'nerd rap'. Even if you're not a fan of the lyrics and whatnot, it's fair to say they're talented musicians. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MeK8VW2iUM Cuntellectual fucked around with this message at 00:57 on Jul 10, 2014 |

Powerslide is a game that no one has played. It's a 3D racing game for PC from the late 90s by an Australian developer. It's a lot of fun, I think it's GOG so pick it up if you can. Anyway the soundtrack is excellent, it's on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPnSeHYzYM0. The first track is a bit generic techno, though not bad by any means. Get past that though and the music gets pretty fantastic.

I've been thinking about Dynamite Heady's soundtrack recently. The composition of some of those tunes just outstanding, and clearly comes from someone who's studied jazz and classical composition (the jazz comes through the most). And although the songs loop, there are so many ideas packed into each tune, it never feels repetitive (listening to it again, the music usually offers something totally different every 8 bars). There's also some masterful programming in there (see last of example for mad jazz improv breakdown. Outstanding stuff). Tonight's A Jazzy Night http://youtu.be/3IuoQpiDu3I Ohnami Konami http://youtu.be/xk_SJBZs4xQ Tower of Puppet http://youtu.be/aGSThT6CYMM Hustle Maruyama (Part 2) http://youtu.be/XpIvywdAsJ8 I encourage people to listen to more, because it's so diverse. Something I noticed in Genesis era games is that the Japanese games always had the best soundtracks. I put this down to a difference of culture - the Japanese give that kind of job everything they've got, whearas westerners might give a videogame their second best, because they're saving the good stuff for their first album.

Streets of Rage. What I love about the SoR soundtrack is that it doesn't sound like videogame music, it sounds like classic early 90s techno. It's of its time, but given this stuff has had multiple resurgences since then, it's aged fantastically. In contrast to the other two games I posted, I'd like to nominate Nights into Dreams on the Sega Saturn. This is classic videogame music - a musical genre in it's own right that wouldn't really exist without the medium. Mario is probably the archetypical example of this kind of music, but Nights completely nails it. Suburban Museum http://youtu.be/RCJMhMtr-AQ Paternal Horn http://youtu.be/P384FoKw_Uw Take The Snow Train http://youtu.be/Aj7IncGK6tI If you only listen to one of those, listen to Suburban Museum. For me at least, it epitomises the unspoiled joy and the fun of childhood. It's just beautiful, and the middle eight at around 1:15 makes me teary every time. Another interesting thing about the Nights soundtrack (and the reason the posted tracks are so long) is that they changed slightly each time you played it (the linked clips attempt to go through all the variations). The changes were somehow linked to the Nightopian creatures that inhabited each level. I left them the gently caress alone because I didn't want the music to change.

This is the last one for tonight, I promise. In 1996, Sega were making GBS threads themselves about the Sony beating them at their own game, I.e. being the coolest kids on the block. PlayStation was edgy and cool. It even had the freaking Chemical Brothers in their games! Sega's answer was to call UK underground label Suburban Base Records and get them to produce a compilation album of videogame remixes. The result was pretty loving awesome. The artists quite obviously didn't have a loving clue what they were doing and just recorded a bunch of tracks with some videogames samples thrown in. Some of those artists were at their peak though, and some of their best work can be found on this compilation. Remarc - Virtua Cop http://youtu.be/y0s_Y45CoH8 Acorn Arts - Baku Baku http://youtu.be/YN_iVzE4kuI Dunderella - Daytona http://youtu.be/woew1zRe93g There's some Richard Jacques stuff on there too, but he takes it too seriously!

A few of my buddies that went to Berklee were giant nerds and decided to make a video game cover band thing like a decade ago. The Kode was basically jazz-rock instrumental band with some crazy talented musicians, and most of their arrangements were amazing. The production was literally done in their loft apartment, so it's not the GREATEST, but they cleaned it up nicely. They've long since disbanded and I don't know if you can even get their music anywhere anymore, so gently caress it, I'm posting it up here. The last show they played was a special reunion show 4 years ago, as they all live in opposite corners of the country. Check out Snake Man and Ken Griffey Jr for sure. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26574375/kodestudio.rar

Do the Protomen count? For those unaware, the Protomen are a rock band that does a very, very vaguely Megaman themed rock opera, along with fun stuff on the side (They played the Terminator 2 soundtrack live for a local reproduction and have an album of Queen songs). They're also really cool and friendly to see live (Though sadly they aren't coming back to my city as there wasn't a huge crowd when they came. ) Anyways, listen to the Protomen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgAWKmX406w Cuntellectual fucked around with this message at 05:35 on Jul 16, 2014 |

gandlethorpe posted:Thanks for making this thread. I'd like to start things off what something I've been wondering about. Whenever I think of video game music, I usually associate the music from games of the late 80s-90s, usually those that were originally composed as MIDIs. There are certain harmonic and melodic elements that are common in a lot of these games that you don't really find in other music. That puts it into its own kind of genre. A rock song composed for/featured in a game would technically be "video game music", but not video game music. A couple examples that I think exemplify this genre: Guile's Theme, The Man With The Machine Gun (FF8), Contra Jungle Theme

It fit the atmosphere of those ice caverns pretty well and sounds cool in general. I'm not good enough with music to be able to say whether it could stand on its own or not but whatever the case I really like this track and feel like it should be a bit more known than it is. Wonder Boy 3: Monster Lair. Ending music It was the first game I ever owned. It came with my Sega Mega Drive. I got it from my big brother for my 5th birthday. He spent the rest of my childhood telling me how much he regretted buying that console because it "turned his little sister into a geek". Speaking of Austin Wintory and great femaale vocalists, he also composed the music for The Banner Saga, a helluva beautiful game. He had the Youtube celebrity musician Malukah to do vocals on one track, and the result is just bloody breathtaking. I'm a pretty unabashed Malukah fanboy really, her voice just does things to me. My favourite is her collaboration with Taylor Davis and the pianist Lara to cover this song from Guild Wars 2. She's most famous for her Skyrim covers, so she was actually commissioned to do bard songs for Elder Scrolls Online, which are also really good. And speaking of Elder Scrolls, I'm also a great fan of Jeremy Soule's work with the game series. I know his work overall can sound a bit samey, but his TES soundtracks really stand out. I adore the TES main theme and how it's been used in different permutations in the last three games. The Morrowind main title is still the best of those though, it just has this amazing sense of wonder about it. And not only the main titles are good, there's a great deal of good stuff on all three games' soundtracks. That said, Soule also did a bang-up job with Supreme Commander. Pyroxene Stigma posted:I'm going to assume Nobuo Uematsu hasn't been mentioned yet because everyone posting is intimately familiar with his work, yes? I don't even like JRPGs (or most typically Japanese games overall, but that's off-topic), but Final Fantasy VI is the precious exception and Nobuo Uematsu's music is a big part of that. The man just has an uncanny talent for creating simple yet emotional and memorable themes, and the FFVI soundtrack has oodles of them. Incidentally, are you familiar with the huge OC Remix project Balance and Ruin? It's every single track from the original FFVI OST made into different remix versions. The music styles vary from dark electro to prog rock opera to loving flamenco. It's just a treasure trove of music and a blast to listen through. You can grab the whole thing for free right here. But to go back to Uematsu, as fond as I am of the FFVI soundtrack, my single favourite piece of his is the Lost Odyssey main theme. I never played the game, but I happened across that track a couple years ago and just lost my poo poo. It's like the guy suddenly started channeling Ennio morricone and Basil Poledouris in addition to his own talent. loving sublime. And I'll close this post with some assorted other favourite pieces of mine.

I came in here to see what everyone else has posted, and there's been some pretty good posts, but I can't believe nobody has yet posted the best game song ever created. You see, there was a pinball table released in the late 80's called Black Knight 2000, and it had music by the guy who did the music for Crue Ball (the weird Motley Crue pinball table video game thing), and it is easily one of the best game songs ever. By the way, the table is in Pinball Arcade, so if you want to play it, it's 5 bucks and it totally counts as a video game song because of that. I'm surprised there isn't more love for Earthbound already. The soundtrack is very odd, and somewhat jazz-inspired-ish. The game is a weird game overall, so there are lots of weird moments that have their own dischordant/ "off" tracks. It's one of those games that, I presume, if you haven't played, I can post a few tracks and you'll just think "oh those are OK", but if you've played it, you'll just smile like an idiot. For example, when you start the game, it asks you for all your character's names (instead of as you meet them, like in some JRPGs). In terms of flash game OSTs, the soundtrack for the MARDEK series is probably one of the best. The tracks for the first 2 games are on YouTube, while the 3rd game's OST is only on Bandcamp . I'd highly recommend listening to Guardian Battle from MARDEK chapter 3, Boss Battle from the first game (it's really in all of the games, but is listed only in the first's OST), and The Inventor from the piano collections. But really, the entire soundtrack is pretty great. The games themselves are also well made (despite the design, art, music, writing, and programming being done by only 1 person) and I would recommend them to anyone that is an RPG fan. Make sure to start with chapter 1 though.SgtScruffy posted:I'm surprised there isn't more love for Earthbound already. I think it's partly because people are more inclined to share obscure music.
