I think Ristar shows how good the Sega Genesis' sound chip actually was. It's a pity some Genesis games farted out forgettable garbage, but Ristar and others did it justice. I was a SNES kid, but I still remember Ristar and its music.

The games in the Zero Escape series have fantastic soundtracks. The games usually have tracks that are either techno influenced or beautiful orchestral ones. Its a strange combination, but it works. Some of the highlights are Blue Bird Lamentation, Septenary Game, and Morphogenetic Sorrow. Don't read the comments on any of these videos unless you've played the games because they will contain spoilers.

Just a few minutes ago, a fantastic cover of Blue Bird Lamentation was uploaded by YouTuber ManuelJBD. Yes, the MegaZeroX7 mentioned in the description is me. And yes, this is the reason I decided to post about the Zero Escape series today.

I'm surprised there isn't more love for Earthbound already. The soundtrack is very odd, and somewhat jazz-inspired-ish. The game is a weird game overall, so there are lots of weird moments that have their own dischordant/ "off" tracks. It's one of those games that, I presume, if you haven't played, I can post a few tracks and you'll just think "oh those are OK", but if you've played it, you'll just smile like an idiot.

For example, when you start the game, it asks you for all your character's names (instead of as you meet them, like in some JRPGs). This is the music that plays:

Great soundtrack. 'Paula's Theme' is such a lonely sounding piece. I never really realized how it fit the narrative before, but now that I think about it Paula was this home-schooled, parentally overprotected 'mutant' kid who was so alone that she had to reach out psychically to some kid from another town to come save her. Narshe's Theme and Terra's Theme from FF6 have that same melancholy feel.

If you're a fan of video game music, specifically stuff from the low-res chip tune days, I'd highly suggest the soundtrack to the Angry Video Game Nerd Movie.

The soundtrack is available on iTunes and Spotify, and was written by Bear McCreary, the composer for The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, and other TV and movie scores. Bear has been a fan of the AVGN since the beginning and is apparently a bona fide classic video game fan. In this album he does a great job of taking real life video game sounds, pulled directly from popular games like Mega Man X, Final Fantasy VI, and Super Mario World, and mixing them with other orchestral instruments. Even the way he writes sounds like it was pulled from a video game, and it's really well done.

There was some discussion earlier in the thread about what makes music sound "gamey" and while I can't really explain, I think the music of Yellow Magic Orchestra produced some very videogame-like tunes in the 80s that likely influenced many 8-bit composers.

I supposed you could say the influence was reciprocal, as evidenced by their titling, such as the song "Computer Games" or the album BGM

Unrelated to that, but I hadn't really though about it until recently: Outkast's B.o.B. sorta sounds like it could be a boss theme from a modern game (ie. 1999 or later). I realize I probably sound like a huge dork, but here's just the instrumental for context. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zWNXpOIRJc

Anyway, here's a song that actually was featured in a video game, Recorded in the 80s, but the original track wasn't actually released until the 00s, years after the game it was featured in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2OWC5Hosv8

There always seems to be a stigma on music if it's from a game even if it's not 'game music' per say.

Somewhat relatedly, the Japanese version of Snake Eater is so great.

It sounds exactly like a song from a James Bond inspired Japanese spy thriller from the 80s.

Rydeen is fantastic.

As for what makes music sound gamey, you have to look at its arcade origins. Every machine in an arcade was competing to be heard, so you needed to go with high, strong and distinct melodies. Chords and harmonies would get lost among in the cacophony. No room for subtlety. Any vocals (or any voice in the game for that matter) would be doubled up to oblivion. The simplicity will have been driven by the hardware too - something like a C64 could only pay 3 or 4 sounds at once. You're not going to waste this four voices and chords, you're going to have a bass line, a drum line, and a lead melody.

Brilliant example of how to make your machine audible in the rumble of an arcade:

Daytona USA

Notice how the voice is doubled up, and each syllable is cut up and pasted back together. You may only hear AYYY OHHH AHHHH, but you could always pick that out in an arcade. It's brilliant sound design.

I was looking for a place to talk this and I finally stumbled upon it! I'm a big fan of JRPG soundtracks. I have no idea why. When I judge a soundtrack, I judge it as a whole. For me to say it's my favorite, I have to like more or less the entire thing. Against all odds, I've managed to form this opinion about more than one game! For me, this is Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 7, and Earthbound. I cannot get enough of the music from these games. So imagine my surprise when I learned there was a thriving community producing amazing remixes of this music.

I'll cut right to the chase! What caused me to seek out this thread was my recent discovery of some new remixes I hadn't heard before. I got my fix from OC Remix and I assumed that had to be all that was out there. Evidently I was wrong! Here's what I've been listening to lately:

Chronotorious - I don't know anything about the backstory of these albums so I'm not really sure what to put here. All I know is if you like Chrono Trigger you should listen to this.

Earthbound: Bound Together - There are a few duds in this album, such as a few aggressively bad vocals, but overall I love the poo poo out of this.

Chrono Symphonic - Another amazing Chrono Trigger collection. Also includes vocal tracks but they are actually really really good.

You might surprise yourself.
I love videogame music. The soundtracks that stick with me are from games that usually contain excessive amounts of blood boobs and/or guns, preferably all at once.

Sin - What's The World Come To
Serious Sam 3 - Hero
Nine Inch Nails - Quake
Quake II - Original & Expansion Pack Soundtrack

I love pretty much all of Serious Sam 3's OST. The first soundtrack for Quake was ambient perfection that leaves you feeling constantly uneasy while the second shifted gears to mechanically driven rock/metal resulting in probably the best videogame industrial rock album ever. If you listen to one soundtrack to shoot poo poo to, it should be Quake II. The expansion pack also had it's own soundtrack by the same artist, not quite as good as the first but it's a decent companion piece.

PSOne/Saturn was the era when this style of game soundtrack was at it's best. I can't begin to think how often Twisted Metal 2 was in my car CD player. I never played Red Asphalt, but I discovered the track Overkill and fell in love right away with it.

Twisted Metal 2 (Title)
Red Asphalt - Overkill
Command & Conquer - Hell March

Raymond Watts is an artist I have a lot of respect for. To my knowledge this is the only music he's created for a videogame, MDK2. Its was on Dreamcast, jaw droppingly gorgeous at the time hard as poo poo.

Raymond Watts/PIG - MDK2

The remake of Killer Instinct on Xbox One is currently my favorite soundtrack at the moment. Too broke for an Xbox, but I've been listening to this for a year now and can't wait to beat some rear end to it one day soon:

Fulgore Theme
Sadira Theme
Main Theme loop

And just because, the Silent Hill sountracks (1 - 4) are masterful with full vocalized songs that sometimes don't even end up in the game. My favorite song from the series has to be "You're Not Here"

If anyone around isn't aware yet, the Harmony of Heroes Tribute Album to the Smash Bros. Soundtrack (and accompanying/relevant pieces) recently came out, and it's seriously mind-blowing how good it is. There's 101 tracks and I haven't made it through all of them yet but they've all been great so far. I'm not even a huge Metroid fan but There's No Metal on Zebes actually made me feel nostalgia for it purely from having played SSB.

As of making this post, the website itself is down, but there are a couple of previews of tracks on this SoundCloud, and here's the torrent links (MP3 (Lossy) / M4A (Lossless))

I just thought I'd bring this up in case anyone hasn't heard of its existence yet. Go listen! :)

Olga Boss Music - MGS2 has a ton of great tracks that weren't released on the official OST and you have to get from gamerips.

Rex's Lair - It's more like a final dungeon theme in a JRPG. I love it.
Enclosure - AKA the reason most give a poo poo about Wolf's death.
Escape - "Not yet, Snake! It's not over yet!" How the loving hell did you survive again, Liquid???

I could talk about Xenosaga's fantastic OSTs now I guess but I'd like to address a more underrated OST. It's one of my favorite video game soundtracks ever - Onimusha: Warlords.

Waterfall Mountain - This one is just unforgettably beautiful and unique considering this was a hack-and-slash horror game.

The music is generic in Dragon Age, there's nothing that stands out as something you'd remember. Also, don't play Dragon Age 2. The saves from those games don't transfer over either way, there's a site you have to use to put in your decisions so it doesn't matter either way.

Dragon Age's soundtrack is overall quite generic and unoffensive, it's there to lay the mood but that's pretty much it. The only actually memorable bit is the main menu theme in DA:O which I think is quite good, though sadly the best part only starts like two thirds into the track:

The whole Croc soundtrack is great. Each track sounds like the level it's in (snow levels sound snowy, underground or cave sections sound cavernous, desert levels sound middle eastern), but contain variations on the same repeating motifs to tie the whole thing together. They also grow to be darker and more ominous as each world goes on, heading towards the boss battle at the end.

Some of the tracks are quite short (so they repeat a little too often in the longer and more complicated levels), but they are pretty much all great. I can wax lyrical about the soundtrack (and the game - it's a hugely under-appreciated little gem) all day, but I'll leave it at that.

The ending credits to Saga and Orta are some of the best outros out there. I'll admit that Nier's OST is what got me into the game. The Drakengard 3 soundtrack is pretty loving weird. There is a brostep battle theme. Vocal effects and electric guitar are a lot more commonplace.

It's still good but not too much like the NieR OST - the final boss theme is the closest it gets, aside from the D3 version of Song of the Ancients.

The other Drakengard games have pretty great OSTs too. D1 is the rare game soundtrack that is really abrasive, uncomfortable and dissonant, but still something I'd listen to outside the game.

Time for me to endorse my Xenosaga Love.

Episode 1 was composed by Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Cross and Xenogears fame. He also had the London Philharmonic Orchestra at his disposal for the soundtrack.

Beach of Nothingness - I think everyone should listen to this one at least. It's so beautiful.
Gnosis - An appropriately awesome theme for invading, invincible space monsters.
Nephilim
Pain - If you remember the credits theme of Xenogears, Xenosaga has a song that can rival it. Mitsuda composed both and they even got the same singer back. I loved that detail.

Now Episode III was composed by Yuki Kajiura who apparently has quite a rep with anime fans. I can see why after hearing this amazing soundtrack.

Testament

Assault - The "dungeon theme" for the best part of teh game. This song is a big reason it's the best part.
Hepatica (KOS-MOS) - There is nothing sadder than two cyborg girls going at it.
Outrageous - It's so nice of Ms. Kajiura to go back and give Weltall such a great theme.

Xenosaga really does have amazing music. There's a lot of cool stuff at OC Remix. I think it's interesting that I think the game is just terrible, but the music is really fantastic. Mitsuda is a genius.

Civilization V has a brilliant soundtrack. Each Civilization has a peace/war track that is based on a famous piece of music from the country. Here are some examples:

Greece - Epitaph of Seikilos

Germany - Ode to Joy

Japan - Rokudan no Shirabe

Civilization: Beyond Earth also has a brilliant soundtrack that fits the game perfectly. I'd say it's far and away the best feature of Beyond Earth.

Think I took a wrong turn...

So I'm actually gonna make a request for music here.

My girlfriend loves Dragon Age and wants me to play Inquisition. But, to do that, I think it' sa smart idea to play the first two DA games.

I've heard a lot about Dragon Age (and Mass Effect) of course but I can't recall ever reading a post about the music in the games. Is it any good?

Lindsey Stirling has a pretty boss music video on DA:I.

She's pretty great - the steampunk Western Roundabout Rival is the best gang dance off you'll get other than West Side Story

Can't believe it took until page 2 for someone to mention Streets of Rage but Yuzo Koshiro is a seriously talented composer. His best work in the series is definitely Streets of Rage II though, the music was actually way ahead of it's time. Perfect example: (remember, this came out in 1992!!)

He also did the music for Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune:

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand, last but not least, he did the completely superb soundtrack for Revenge of Shinobi. This is from 1989, believe it or not!
