Another sentimental favorite, partly because this is the #1 game of a close friend of mine. Definitely Motoi Sakuraba's best soundtrack, by far.

Always warms my heart to see love for this great underrated game with its great underrated OST.

I have yet to find a "normal battle theme" better than The True Mirror.

In JRPG news, I have a question. I'm gonna be starting the Dragon Quest series for the first time in September. Do any of those games have any soundtracks that stand out?

I like the symphonic suites that come out for each game. Keep in mind multiple orchestras have done those soundtracks so the quality can vary. The ones by the London Symphony Orchestra (I-VII) IMO are the ones to look for.

The Etrian Odyssey games have always been great. I know a lot of people love the FM-Towns tracks of the DS games, but the newer arranged stuff is really fantastic too. Half the fun with the remakes is seeing how they redid the songs.

Anyway here's some tracks that are cool + good

At the Heart of the city is an Alien horror, so vile and so powerful that not even death can claim it.
Favorite soundtracks:

Command & Conquer series

Frank Klepacki's ticket to fame, a series of industrial soundtracks that nicely backdrop rushing tanks into one another.

Deus Ex

Straylight Productions' last work, a dynamic soundtrack for a dynamic game (sadly the music rips can't cover this aspect) with lots of variety for every level.

Homeworld

While all the other music is about getting you pumped, rocking, excited, the Homeworld soundtrack is the exact opposite: simple, atmospheric, and perfectly appropriate. It set the tone for a space opera like no other, and anyone that has played the game will never forget Adagio for Strings.

Favorite tracks:

Jesper Kyd who did the music for most of the assassins creed games (maybe all) is amazing. Everything from ACII and AC Brotherhood is some epic music.

You really should, Touhou games are awesome. IMO Ten Desires is the best in the series to start with, it's sorta low-difficulty and has one of ZUN's best soundtracks (not on par with UFO or IN, but still very good). There's also a really cool music gimmick where there's 2 versions of each track, and if you overlap them it sounds a lot fuller and more detailed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DE9qjbTJyk8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE9FhKaBBRw

I really dislike the last 2 games from a gameplay perspective but they have some great tunes too:

Also Touhou piano covers are really impressive. This one is a favorite of mine. Her Mountain of Faith medley is also amazing.

Final Fantasy XII disappointed a lot of fans with its more traditional soundtrack composed by Hiroshi Sakimoto, but I think it was great for reflecting the sophisticated tone of the game with a few standout tracks.

The game opens with what I think is the best version of the Final Fantasy theme.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVhkE8em0WI

Rabanastre Downtown is one of the more unique selections on the soundtrack, driven by what sounds like hand drums and maracas rather than strings.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMgLuY6bNds

Time For Rest
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUp46wc9d0Y

Esper Battle is easily the catchiest song in the game and is great for amping up boss battles.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVYHhcYWttY

Sky Fortress Bahamut is a great final dungeon theme. It avoids the typically dreaded tones of most final dungeons themes and instead goes for a heroic and triumphant feel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVDTwxjcV9s

The game finishes with Kiss Me Goodbye, a vocal pop song composed by the original Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu.

Sakimoto can do no wrong, imo. His Vagrant Story and FFT soundtracks are at least as good as FF12, though not quite as nostalgic for me.

It's basically correct. ZUNTATA's soundtracks are loving amazing atmospheric proggy stuff, the Recca OST is really good for an NES sountrack with some neat rave/hardcore techno tendencies, Manabu Namiki is also super versatile. In fact, shmups in general tend to have really good soundtracks.

Most of the Garegga soundtrack is just plagiarizing classic Detroit Techno tracks (see: Underwater Rampart -> Jupiter Jazz) but it's plagiarizing loving awesome music and the vibe is perfectly suited to the game so I don't care.

Skyward Sword is my least favorite Zelda soundtrack. Most of the themes are too ambient for my liking, and some of the few good ones are reused from earlier titles, including the central theme, Ballad Of The Goddess, which is Zelda's Lullaby in reverse. But EVERY Zelda has some good original music, and SS is no exception.

Spoilered for those who haven't played it yet:

Knight Academy & Sparring Hall
Skyloft (Composed by a woman, FYI)
Bamboo Island
Lanayru Mining Facility
Lanayru Mining Facility (Past)
Ancient Cistern
Ghirahim's Theme
Ghirahim Battle I
Ghirahim Battle II
Ghirahim Battle III

At least the bonus orchestral CD is swell! :keke:

P.S. Orchestral recording featurettes.

I just can't get over how excellent Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage's soundtrack is. Maybe it's the nostalgia, but in general I think the music from Spyro 2 and 3 are just great.

Plus, they can standalone. Personally, the mark of a great soundtrack for me is if it can be great entirely outside the context of its source material.
