![]() What is this? Well, this is a team based-action-RPG based on the X-Men made by Raven Software for the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox in 2004. This game started a series of games that were all made by Raven Software except the last one which was Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2. M:UA 2 was made by Vicarious Visions instead of Raven Software. It wasn't that bad of a change, in my opinion because the games had always used an engine created by Vicarious Visions. My copies are on the PS2 (for X-Men Legends and X-Men Legends 2) and PS3 (for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2). According to the wikipedia article on the game, originally Raven wanted to make this a turn-based game like Final Fantasy, but I think it was for the best that they decided to go the action-RPG route instead. This summer we are getting a new X-Men movie from director Bryan Singer and I figured this was as good a time as any to bust out a classic Marvel game from the vault and do an LP on it. Eventually, I will be going through the other releases in this series as I complete them. I will start with this one and then move on to the others in release order. Is there Bonus Content for this game? Believe it or not, there is bonus content in these games. It's basically concept art and comic book covers for (most of) the playable characters. For the concept art, I will be posting probably three pieces with each update. For the comic covers, I will post them as we obtain them. Sounds great, if I want in on this then what do I need to do? Well, to be honest I will be looking for multiplayer allies for Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and M:UA 2 when I get to those games. If you are interested in joining in the fight then there are a couple of things you will need to know. First of all, for M:UA 1 I will be playing the an American copy of the game and I'm not sure if the multiplayer is region-free for that game. If it isn't then you will need an American copy of the game to play with me. For M:UA 2 I will be playing a U.K. copy of the game because that was the only way I could get the DLC characters on my PS3 version. I know M:UA 2 has region restrictions on its multiplayer so you will need a U.K. copy of that game to play with me. If you are interested then post your PSN name in the comments of the Youtube video. I will message you and let you know when I am close to starting the multiplayer games. Other than that, I will be allowing audience participation by allowing you to decide which characters I take on each mission. I will post a link to a straw poll over at strawpoll.me which will be how you will decide on the characters to be used for each mission. Upload Schedule I will try to upload episodes every two episodes every week. The earliest they will be up is Friday and the latest they will be up is Sunday. The first update has four episodes only because it is the first update and I wanted to get through the opening of the game before the second update. SPOILER POLICY I know these games are kind of old and the later PS3 ones are generally based on old arcs that Marvel has already used, but if we could keep the spoilers to a minimum that would be great. If you need to post spoilers as part of your question in your post then please remember to use spoiler tags. Without further ado, let's begin X-Men Legends..... That's what I'm hoping for. What I'm not looking forward to is the LP I'm going to be doing on the sequel to this game. For some reason, I just can't get into that game even though I can easily get into this game, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2.

I had the same issue with X-Men Legends 2. Loved the first one, struggled to get into the second one and eventually gave up. Not even the presence of Deadpool could save it for me. Loved Ultimate Alliance even more. Still kicking myself for trading it. However, same issue with Ultimate Alliance 2. For whatever reason, it just felt like a drag compared to the original and I gave up part way through. Oh, and as far as voting for party members, I vote you take Jean Gray on every mission. She's got one of the best and most versatile movesets in the game and I don't think there was ever a mission in the first game that didn't benefit from having her around.
|
![]() |
|
True, but her (Jean's) abilities really shine once you have mastered her buff ability and combine it with Cyclops's mastered buff. You end up with invulnerability and insane attack power for quite awhile. I know this because when I played through the game in order to have a complete save file for the costumes I had those two buffs active on the final mission and I completely rofl-stomped the final boss. Edit: If everyone could use the straw poll site to vote that would be extremely helpful. I just voted for Storm myself because I figured I needed one of the leaders, but my vote counts no more than a vote from anyone else. Funny, I had the exact opposite problem: I loved XML2, but struggled to get into the rest of the series. I really want to get hold of MUA1&2, but I've never really been able to find them for a reasonable price.

Yeah, I got lucky when I found my copies of MUA 1 and 2. Originally I had an American copy of MUA2, but I later found out that i was too late to get the DLC characters because they were taken off of the American PSN store. I was forced to import a UK copy so I could get all of the DLC characters. Unfortunately, this means I can only play online with UK people because MUA2 has region restrictions on the online multiplayer.

For whatever reason, it just felt like a drag compared to the original and I gave up part way through. Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I've beaten X-Men Legends multiple times, but beating Legends 2 once was an act of willpower and I couldn't bring myself to bother with New Game Plus. I think Legends 2 just drags for a lot of reasons. It has more stuff and more characters, but everything is slow and bloated by comparison to the first game. Everyone has multiple redundant moves and passives for you to sift through and find the one that doesn't suck, the improvement per pip is granular to the point of being unnoticeable, the equipment is a nightmare to deal with, the levels go on forever and most enemies pose no challenge whatsoever. It's just all so repetitive and grindy, while Legends really benefits from being a much more linear and focused game. Ultimate Alliance was really good too, though I haven't played the second one, except for the half-arsed PS 2 port that was just atrocious. (Bugged to hell, graphics looked worse then the first game, enemies literally pop in right on top of you. Arg.)

Can I just say how glad I am that my copies of MUA and MUA2 are on the PS3? Still, it would have been nice to get MUA Gold Edition for the 360 and have a 360 to play it on. There are some bonus DLC characters in the Gold Edition for the 360 that aren't on any other copy of MUA. I am trudging my way through XML2 at the moment in order to have a complete save file in which to draw the concept art and stuff from for that future thread.

Now that we are about eight episodes in I suppose now is a good chance for me to ask a question. There is a cheat in X-Men Legends 2, or rather several cheats, that give you access to all of the Loading Screens, Comic Covers, Cinematics, Concept Art and Characters in the game without you having to go and hunt them down through the game. My question is what would you guys think of an LPer that used those cheats so that he/she wouldn't have to make more than one trek through a game that isn't quite as good as the rest of the games in its series.
|
![]() |
|
No one's bothered by it. It's been asked in the Sandcastle and Blasting Zone before, but there's not really a place for all these frequently asked questions to go so responses always get buried. But yeah, no one's bothered by it. They want to be entertained and see the content shown off. If using some cheats make that a bit easier for the LP, then go ahead.

Thank you. I just needed reassurance about that because I really don't feel like going through the game more than once. Luckily whenever you start a new game you can still find all the comics and stuff even if you have a 100% complete save file. That means I can still show off where they are and yet I still don't have go through the game more than once.

I wanted to ask what happens if Juggernaut tries to tackle Blob, but it seems like such an event already happened and Juggernaut's semi unstopableness won over Blob's semi unmoveableness. Anyway, this game seems more story focused than Legends 2 and the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games. It's also far more "contained" than the other games in that it limits the number of different heroes to control and villains to smash. Personally, I take that over a larger pool of heroes, but I can see why people would think otherwise, especially if the larger pool results into your favorite being available.

Definitely something to look forward to in that aspect.
