For all the mechanical improvements in Monster Hunter World, it's still tricky to pick up useful stuff during a fight if it is remotely near anything else. I don't need more footprints to track the monster currently uppercutting me into the sun, but those slinger bombs would've been nice!

No, people keep comparing every other Paper Mario to TTYD and being mad that they aren't TTYD.

I liked Super Paper Mario, so when a bunch of people told me this was why Sticker Star got so much flack I bought Sticker Star. It was just poo poo, comparisons to TTYD aside. I didn't try Color Splash since it sounded like more Sticker Star, which was poo poo. I also didn't try that Paper Mario/Mario and Luigi crossover since M&L went majorly downhill with Dream Team.

It sounds like Origami King might be something of a return to form? That would be cool.

Anyway if Origami King gets a bad response and I see someone post "people are just mad it's not TTYD" I'm not giving them the benefit of the doubt.

TTYD was so ridiculous that it's probably no surprise that they're not doing anything like it anymore.

I can't think of another Mario game just having a gallows complete with noose on it in the town square these days, for one.

At the very least just bring back unique partners like it and PM1 had! They keep Sonicing the series and making a new system on how the game plays instead of just improving on the groundwork they've laid with the first two! How about a buzzy beetle or piranha plant partner for a change? I liked the badge and recipe system in TTYD a lot! And the same for the stage set-up for battles, it'd be neat if you had more control over the crowd and stuff rather than everything being random.

I don't even think TTYD is the best Mario RPG, for me it's just the last time that franchise felt like it lived up to its own potential (disclaimer, I liked SPM but it felt like it should've been more of a side game).

It's like they somehow conflated innovating with having to gut fundamental RPG mechanics. Sticker Star had a lot of good but I ultimately hated it for making the core gameplay largely a net resource drain, and I just decided to drop the franchise until they put the base battling & level mechanics back in and innovated on top of that. I have a little hope for the new one, but not a lot, and it'll take a lot of good word-of-mouth for me to pick it up.

I want a Mario & Peach RPG where they both get weapon upgrades like either TTYD or SMRPG. More partners can be added but that should be the basic team.

I liked PM64 a lot but for some reason could never get past hooktail in TTYD before getting bored... However I played on Wii and the disc or something was hosed and all my inputs were delayed, which made paper Mario combat extremely unenjoyable lol. Maybe I'll play it on dolphin

The only real problem with Color Splash was that it got its water from the well Sticker Star poisoned. It's very much 'Sticker Star But Good', it solved a lot of the problems that the last game's design had... but people just looked at it on the surface level, saw 'Sticker Star gameplay again' and left. And rightfully so, because I don't think the world really needed an attempt to redeem Sticker Star.

Games with unintelligent autosaves bug me. I'm replaying Hyper Light Drifter, and after spending a while stocking up on health and upgrades to retry fighting a particularly tough mob, I died and out of nowhere it decided my save point would be in the middle of said fight down to minimum health with no medkits. Every other time it's just kicked me back to the last room transition, so real  there, game

Most RPGs have you spend points on combat stuff and noncombat stuff and it's impressive how many (both tabletop and video game) don't seem to realise that if combat is a mandatory part of the game, these should be different pools of points so you can't spend everything in combat and then get stuck on a lockpick or vice versa when there's a mandatory boss fight.

In tabletop games, at least, there's supposed to be some degree of specialisation, so as long as someone can pick locks you're not going to get stuck.

Video games often go half way to that by giving you a bunch of sidekicks but then, for no apparent reason, make you do everything (except combat) yourself rather than letting one of them take over when it's their area of expertise.

Also there's that one section where your sidekicks go away and you have to fight with your non-combat main character, or maybe everyone goes away and you have to fight using only that one sidekick you never bothered to level up or get gear for

This is probably a case of familiarity breeding contempt (as I've played the dang thing at least four times now) along with the game just having aged...but man Arkham Asylum slowly and slowly becomes more of a hard sell to me as time goes on. Not so much big upheavals of my opinion as death by a thousand cuts.

But anyway my big complaint has remained unchanged after all these years: It's still baffling that walls that require the triple bat-claw say they need to be blown up in detective vision. And there's like, one, maybe two of them in the whole game that accurately state they need to be pulled down. So what happened? :psyduck:

PoE2:Deadfire - So, final arc is rolling up, you need to pass a PLOT STORM(tm) and the game wants me to ally with a mutually-exclusive faction, or go at it alone to do so.

There are 4 factions. 3 of them just want you to sabotage/assassinate people of the others, tedious, underhanded stuff.
The 4th faction, the pirates, want you to hijack a ghost ship and use that to ram through the storms.

I mean, why are the other options even on the table when you can hijack and commandeer a ghost ship?
(Yes, the pirates are terrible, but every single faction in the game is just 5 layers of terrible anyhow.)

I've just started playing this game for the first time a bit before, right now my main complaint is how ugly everything looks. Color palette is black on vantablack, pretty much every texture (for both things and people) wouldn't look out of place in the Silent Hill industrial otherworld.

Fallout 4 kind of gets around this in that every companion has their own skills, but then just says "gently caress you" and makes them have a maximum amount of tries before they just say "nope can't do it, sorry". Even if you give them a thousand lockpicks they give up after failing a few times.

I'm annoyed at games that give you a chance to succeed based on your skills. All that does is encourage saving and loading at every opportunity.

Currently playing Disco Elysium, and I love the game, but having skill checks be based on chance rather than a straight-up "you're not good enough in this area to try" means me wondering if its worth saving and loading until a pass a check, in order to see more of the game. If I didn't have enough points in a skill, it would be more about me wondering what part of my character to prioritize my points in, rather than wondering if I should spend more time saving and loading.

White checks you can try again later with a better chance anyway after boosting the skill or doing something that makes the check easier.

For red checks you never know whether you'll see more of the game by passing them or failing them. Failing a red check isn't "nothing happens", it's "something happens that you didn't intend"
