My girlfriend is an elementary school teacher. Most kids are retarded because their parents are retarded and also not married, thus depriving the little maggots of a stable home life and perpetuating a heartbreaking cycle. By the time she gets a hold of those kids its too late in many respects to fix them, they just don't see the need to pay attention and teachers have no real authority. Common Core doesn't matter, she's getting the same results as before. Of course, we're both white and therefore horrible people who just don't understand what it's like on da streetz and really can't judge because we all don't know them, pattern recognition is for babies, etc. Common Core probably works great on kids whose parents give enough of a poo poo, guys. There are other societal factors making for retarded Americans. Common Core is a good try, honestly, but the home life makes a far, far bigger impact on children's learning. No songs on the radio about reading books and poo poo, though. However, bands will make her dance. Don't let anyone tell you that isn't an important message for the kids!

Rhonyn Peacemaker posted:NPR did a report on common core math this morning. Kids love it. Teachers say the transition was hard, but kids learning it say it is way easier. White kids with married parents?

Rhonyn Peacemaker posted:It sounded like all poor and hispanic. But married parents, all snark aside? Latinos have good family structure and try to get better things for their kids than they had. I'm told that it makes a huge difference in academic success, while children raised by children don't really know how to motivate the newer ones. This isn't really a line of thought about Common Core at this point, really, but my theory is that Common Core is fine anyway, it's just the societal factors that are the problems with the uneducated younger generations, not their inability to grasp a new learning method. Again, all my info comes from a Chicago public school teacher from an underperforming school who is frustrated that she can't do better. I'll just shut up now I guess I'm not really contributing to this furor over the New Math. What's the deal with X and why do I need to solve for it, anyway?

All management really care about is those tests and the resulting funding for third graders. Third grade is a year the kids can Actually Fail and have to repeat.
