In some cases they could visually do it, but they couldn't tell you the right answer since they'd never seen that combination in fractions before. I've also taught middle schoolers who assumed X or X^2 meant 0X or 0X^2 (which obviously fucks up the quadratic equation).

Frankly, rather than teaching proofs directly, kids might be more receptive to basic Symbolic Logic and then transitioning that into proofs.
