It was more disappointing (and surprising) when I found that even most of Manhattan isn't like Times Square.

So explain to me how to multiply 53 by 34. Also, explain why it works, don't just cite your bullshit algorithm.

There isn't any reason why it works. It just does. Tell yourself that multiplication is just repeated addition, then use a calculator and move on.

There's no reason why 3 and 2 make 5. We just assigned those symbols to three different concepts that happen to all work out in reality when you're counting 3 apples and 2 apples.

I'm a math professor. I'd rather every freshman student I had be taught by common core so I wouldn't see:

(-1)*1^(2/3) =... I'd simplify it, but I don't have a calculator.

This was in a Calc. 2 class.

I majored in math and took a graduate measure theory class.

I still had to stare at your post for a few seconds to figure out why you considered it simple.

Goddamnit, everything I learned is disappearing. D:

Do you know why FOIL works?

I know why FOIL works because I memorized it, and then, through the power of not being a complete idiot, I had noticed a pattern play out by the time I had been forced to use it a few times.

People have the wrong idea with math. If it's not based on proofs then the first thing to do is memorize, memorize, memorize. Even then, you want to memorize the important theorems before you understand how they work.

You're never going to understand a process if you can't even try to think about why it works without struggling to remember what the next step is.

"Do you know why FOIL works?"

I mean, can you answer that question without being able to remember what "FOIL" stands for?

Wrong..
I didn't say how, I said why. What algebraic property are you using?

Ah. Then you mean they simply haven't been forced to memorize the distributive property?
