Also remember if you're ever stumped, call on another PC or an NPC officer or detective, they'll get a shot at noticing something you didn't and might help you move in a direction.

Zena Halcyon

Zena was born on Corellia, though she never knew her family, having been left at a police station as an infant. Going through foster care growing up wasn't easy, especially with so few togruta in good standing on the planet. When she was 10, she simply disappeared from the foster records one day and was listed as a runaway.

As far as she was concerned, that was when her life had actually begun. She got involved with a street gang and found herself drawn to the idea of being part of a group that accomplished something. As she was young, she was generally sent around to deliver packages and watch people. Nobody expects a kid to be an informant or a runner.

A few years down the line and she found herself doing all sorts of things in the name of 'brotherhood' and most of her brothers and sisters ended up getting killed along the way. The more people died or got hosed up on drugs the more she realized that her best bet was going to be to get out of the life before it took her too. She started informing to the police, letting them know what was going down and when so they could act on it.

After a year of doing this, she asked for an out. She had networked her way through the underworld to be personally acquainted with a local crime boss, and in exchange for planting listening and tracking devices throughout his personal possessions and residence she was given the option to put her skills and knowledge of the underworld to proper lawful use.

It was then that she met Thaneo Odai. The Drall put her to use investigating secondary murders that his overworked department had no time for. She wasn't an official detective, but a private investigator working alongside Corellia PD. Two years and multiple successful investigations and arrests later, the old man finally relented and let the girl have a badge and a proper paycheck.

What would be the DC on the Vigilance roll to remember details of the recording like the room number on the door as the Hat Man opened it?

What is the difficulty to work out which section of the footage has been tampered, and is there hallway/ lobby cameras I can check the footage from?

nothingtoseehere: You can pretty obviously picked out the tampered bit, but that file is simply missing. if you do a 3D computers check you might get more info. hallway/lobby cameras, make a persuasion check of your flavor (charm, deception, coercion, etc) of 1c2d against the manager with 1 boost because he already helped you a little.

keyser: you can either do a perception or med check on the guy in the car, or work the crowd, 3d in any case.

jaynen: can you roll more dice in the future there's not enough dice there :). In reality, most of that is simple computer stuff or database lookup, I wouldn't need a check for them unless it's wildly out of the ordinary (a database you dont have access to, like PD from another city; etc)

jawdins: you can roll whatever flavor you like, charm to be good cop, coercion to be bad cop, deception if you can narrativly explain it. Streetwise if you are looking for info from a CI or other type of lead. In any case, 3d 1s (due to such a large crowd)

I just didn't want to hold things up. I wasn't sure if I could access the company who owned the cranes info without some sort of roll. And also I figured on a database lookup maybe the computers rolls would act sort of like perception in terms of what data might be found.

Why two setback? Jaynen said in IRC earlier that it's because Kastan had a drink prior to coming on scene, and if that's the case I think you're misunderstanding how Alcoholism works, because if you DON'T have a drink when you're an alcoholic, you get jittery and have the shakes and your vision blurs... functional alcoholics literally have to have some alcohol in their systems to remain functional, it's actually very hard for them to actually get drunk because their tolerance is so high.

That's specific to alcohol and benzodiazepines. It's also why withdrawing from either of those two classes of substance can actually kill you, whereas anything else like heroin or cocaine will not.

EDIT: To clarify, if that's how you're going to read the Addiction, then I'm going to either change the character up or straight up drop him and roll something else, because playing the entire game with setbacks just for that is pointlessly frustrating.

Yesmin Zara

Yesmin Zara had been a rising star once. A top graduate of the Imperial Office of Criminal Investigations' Coruscant Academy, she'd been picked as a Sector Ranger candidate before making it clear that she had little interest in the more hands-on aspects of that job. Instead she trained as a behavioural and interrogation specialist, an area in which she excelled.

The IOCI had been a natural choice for Zara. She came from a family of military officers – her mother had been killed in action only a few years after her birth and her father had retired and been given a position somewhere in the military bureaucracy – but had always been averse to violence. The idea of serving the galaxy in a less violent manner, fighting injustice as a criminal investigator, was far more appealing.

Zara's success in her chosen field was not entirely natural, however. From a young age she had found herself able to do things she could not readily explain – most notably, an ability to sense the emotions and even thoughts of others. She had mentioned it only once, to her father. He had gotten upset, accused her of lying, and told her that it was dangerous to say things like that. Then he had proceeded to once again drink himself unconscious. She had never told anyone about it again.

Though she had learnt a certain amount of discretion growing up, Zara had not expected the amount of scrutiny she received at the IOCI. Perhaps it would have been different if she'd gotten along better with others – her reserved nature and occasionally abrasive attitude didn't win her a lot of friends – but as it was, a few less friendly colleagues began asking rather pointed questions about her “intuitions”. It had seemed harmless until the sudden arrival of an ISB investigator.

Zara had acquitted herself well in the subsequent interview, but it was not enough to make the investigation go away, and she eventually realized that there was probably nothing she could do to convince the investigator that the rumours were false. And then, miraculously, she was saved by someone within the ISB itself: a old friend of her mother, now a high-ranking ISB officer. He closed down the investigation, officially concluding that the rumours were wholly unsubstantiated.

With her career in the IOCI now stalled and quite possibly putting her in further danger, she arranged a transfer with the help of her new protector – Corellia being chosen because it was outside of direct Imperial control. Though it could be seen as a step down, Zara has never been particularly motivated by ambition; for the moment, she's happy just to be able to focus on doing her job.

I noticed that the original case blurb identified the victim, but neither the senator or his assistant have mentioned anything about knowing them. Can you confirm that the victim was identified when the murder was called in?

Coordination, you can switch it up to Vigilance if you like, and reroll the good bits.

Coordination because you were racing to intercept/cut the guy off (even though you didn't know it that way), rather than lie in wait and ambush. Could go either way though.
