In other news, Strasburg is totally back since he abandoned his slider. He has 9 straight quality starts (please don't jinx him this start) with a fantastic K/BB and decent WHIP over that period.

Edit: QS are kind of dumb, so here are his real stats his last 8 games not counting tonight

52 hits in 53.1 IP. 2.03 ERA with 57/10 K/BB

that slider was so god drat awful. I can't believe it made it past 3 starts

If you took an infielder with a great arm for an infielder and moved him to the outfield, would the tool translate to being a great outfield arm or is outfield a completely different level of "great arm"?

Arm is arm, that's why all the fat 3B prospects get moved to RF instead of LF

Greinke pitched 6 innings, I wouldn't exactly call that leaving early, regardless of his pitch count. Probably Don Mattingly felt like playing some matchups.

The thing is that the hitting gap between Greinke and SVS against a RHP isn't enough of a jump to take your really good starting pitcher out.

What really does that mean? I've always wondered. There ARE teams that are good at it. And there are teams that historically look incompetent at pitcher development. What's the difference?

I've always suspected that the difference lay with evaluation, but does that hold any water? Some teams can see talent and draft or trade for it. Then development is routine. But teams with crap evaluation are going to historically draft and develop crap pitchers.

Orioles, I'm looking at you. Somehow the O's drafted Bundy and Gausman but we'll see. But the only arm I can think of that was truly good, drafted and developed by the O's was Mussina. Otherwise, they have been pretty much incompetent at it. I suppose it's difficult to make a judgment regarding a teams ability to develop when their historical evaluations have been so poor.

Obviously evaluation plays a large role, but actual development is a huge part of it. That's how the Cardinals pull plus third pitches out of college pitchers' asses.

Tony Gwynn was awesome. I've been pretty indifferent to the Padres my whole life, but Gwynn was a treat to watch. I met him one time when I was still going to SDSU. He was on campus handing out tickets to SDSU baseball games. He said he wanted to generate interest in the program, and he said he was doing what Steve Fisher used to do. gently caress.

When SDSU announced that they had signed him to a one-year contract extension last week, I thought that had meant that he had turned a corner and was getting better. San Diego is gonna have no icons left soon. Coleman, Gwynn, Seau :(

I really hope he was able to watch Kawhi win Finals MVP last night.
