Can I buy you a rootbeer?

First come first serve. Either PM me, or message me elsewhere (@glassbottommeg or whatevs) and convince me you're a goon / an honest person that won't just leak this code and spoil the fun for everyone. This is also only open to people competing in SA GameDev. ;)

come join us in IRC. #SAGameDev on synirc!

Every year, we erstwhile few gather on the field of code and art, and do battle. Some for glory, some to prove that they can finally finish a project, and others for the glittering riches. Some simply wish to redeem themselves, and finally have their name scratched from The Wall Of Shame. But for whatever the reason, we've done it for 7 years. SEVEN YEARS. And now the eighth year is upon us. Get ready, because it's time for:

(Logo and tiny logo and layered PSD by Polo-Rican)

SomethingAwful Game Dev Challenge 9

Every year, we hold a game development contest here at SomethingAwful. The goal? To make an ENTIRE GAME within a single month. June, the month in which you stand today, is for ORGANIZATION AND TEAM FORMING. You are NOT to write a single stitch of code, ink a single line of art, that is project specific. Instead, now is the time to formulate ideas, write general code systems for engines, begin rough concepting, and generally figure out how, come July, you will make a game for the following theme.

This year's theme is: Public Access Television

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXkBzTLOyjchttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_ukLomGV7M

Especially if you're not from the US, you might have no idea what "Public Access TV" means. Basically, it a channel/band on which people broadcast just about anything, with no standards or control or anything else. Like the above. Here's a YouTube on the subject, with yet more bizarre examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cll61_VOqzA

If you're still confused, and going "but I'm not from the US, I've never even seen this!" - yes you have. You've seen Tim and Eric, and they have the soul of Public Access TV down pat:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFTaiWInZ44

You would be forgiven for thinking "wait, this year's theme is about... making terrible games?". No. Terrible games that no one wants to play are still terrible. Your challenge, over the month of July, is more be to make a charmingly terrible game. Something that's awkward, and stilted, but endearing or interesting enough that players want to see how it ends. Something that inspires conversation, that's fun and engaging (if also bizarre). You could also make a game about running a Public Access TV network, or a game that takes place backstage of a Public Access TV show, or command police raid on a suspicious apparently-terrorist Public Access TV show, or... just about anything. Have fun with it! Get creative!

Competition Begins: July 1st
Competition Ends: July 31st, midnight (in your timezone)

If you wish to enter, your entry must be in by midnight, July 31st, on the SA GameDev wiki. The judges will then begin judging, and we'll see who wins.

How do I submit my entries?

  • Go to the SA GameDev wiki and make an account. GET THIS DONE BEFORE MIDNIGHT ON ENTRY DAY, seriously. Make sure you can log in and edit a page.
  • Make a page for your team. Try and choose a name you'll add to in successive years, so that all your entries end up grouped (assuming you keep working with the same team).
  • Make sure this page includes: a download or where-to-play link, instructions, and a few screenshots. Ideally a youtube video as well.
  • (MORE TO COME)

This sounds fun, but what if I don't have the slightest idea how maku gamu?

Don't worry about it! Tons of people have entered this without ever having made a game before, and they pretty much all had a blast doing it. That's a huge part of why we run it every year. It's a great excuse to finally take the plunge and commit to making something, and it's an even better motivation to actually FINISH that something. So give it a go! We usually have people spanning the gamut of skillsets, from absolute novices to super experienced types, and you'd be surprised how often it's the novices or lesser known types that actually win.

Tools that might help:
Just remember, if the judge can't get your entry to work? You're gonna get a bit fat zero. So make sure it's easy to play. Previous winners of the SA Gamer's Choice especially have almost all had web-playable builds / not too many average folks are willing to download an exe these days. The judges are less demanding, and downloads are fine, but they might be on Mac or PC / have issues with your entry if it requires crazy DLLs.

Judging And Winning

The competition has two ways of winning. First is via judging. Our group of volunteer judges will sit down with all of the games, play them through, and rate them on the following scales...

Visuals (10 points) - How attractive is your game? Is it pleasant to look at, or does it make eyeballs bleed (in a bad way)?
Audio (10 points) - Does the game's sound pull you into the game? Is it whatever the game feels like it needs?
Fun (20 points) - Is the game entertaining/engaging? Does it draw players in, and make them want to complete the game?
Polish (10 points) - Is the game well put-together? Is it stable, and juicy? Does it feel "complete"?
Innovation (10 points) - Is it a generic corridor shooter/platformer/whatever, or does it really try to do something original with the theme?
Theme Adherence (30 points) - Does this feel like a game that makes good use of the theme? Or does it feel like the theming was sticky-taped on top of a game made for another purpose?
Story (10 points) - Does the game tell the story it sets out to tell? Is it well-executed/engaging?

... we add the category scores up for each game to a final total. From that, we choose the winners (typically a top 3, etc). We ALSO skim the top 10-20 games off the top, and those become the poll options for a player-chosen SA Gamer's Choice award. Sometimes the same game wins both, other times, it's totally different, and each tends to have its own prizes.

As you can see, theme adherence and fun are most important. So bake those brains, and make sure you have a compelling use of the theme that's both cool and fun. Easy, right? ;)

Known Judges:
  • Innerguard
  • Leif.
  • poemdexter
  • seiken (if he can't think of an idea)
  • Tube
  • Kunzelman
  • Polo-Rican

All judges are volunteers, and you can not compete AND judge. We'd prefer judges with experience in the field - indies with released titles, AAA or mobile industry folks, you know the drill.

Known Prizes:

  • Stencyl Studio License (x2)
  • Unity 3D Pro License (x1)
  • $100 for the first place winner and $50 for Gamer's Choice, and possible runner up prizes if it's a close call (AG3)
  • $30 worth of steam game of winners choice for the best/most humourous use of Jebediah Kerman from Kerbal Space Program (Innerguard)
  • A copy of Door Kickers on Steam for anyone who makes a public access FMV game remake of the original Police Quest SWAT. Yeah, SWAT 1. With the gun-toting grandma hiding in the yard. (Leif.)
  • $200 #SAGameDev prize (poemdexter, details below)
  • 20+ Steam game keys (Ulta, details below)
  • Show Us Your Privates: I've learned a ton by reading other people's code, let us see yours! Game that releases source code showing off the most novel or useful technique, under a BSD/Apache license. Will want help from actual gamefolk to determine what's really useful. (Subjunctive)
  • Unfunny Web Joke: lots of games are delivered over the web, but most don't use the web. Pull in YouTube content, have quests to get Twitter retweets, some FB integration that doesn't make me angry, generate levels from web page structure, mash up some Wikipedia stuff; most of the Internet is public-access quality, mine that gold! Best per judges' rankings, is-that-webby-enough at my unimpeachable discretion. (Subjunctive)
  • Go Big or Go Home: best game (per judges' rankings) that's backed by a :toxx: before July 1. (Subjunctive)
  • Ridiculously huge texture collection on a DVD to the best entry from a newcomer that uses some form of 3D. 2.81gb of all sorts of textures, mostly with diffuse/normal/spec/height etc maps. (Enos Shenk)
  • You Tried and Spectacularly Failed: I will give 1000 dogecoins to the person in last place who actually finishes a game. (Jo)
  • I Can Make It On My Own - $25 to the best (as determined by judges) game made completely solo. This means you didn't get anyone else to make stuff for you during the competition. You can still have used other free assets or whatever from other places, but nobody doing anything for the competition specifically. (sighnoceros)
  • Lost in Translation - $25 to a completed game made by a team that clearly did not understand the theme (as chosen by me, but likely a game with a very low Theme Adherence score). (sighnoceros)
  • Kid's Gonna Be a Star - $25 to a game of my choice from a novice game dev that shows a lot of promise. (sighnoceros)
  • Judge Dread - $25 to a game of my choice that I feel deserved a better score than it got. (sighnoceros)
  • Diamond in the Rough - $25 to a game of my choice that I like despite poor audio-visual presentation. (sighnoceros)
  • Polished Turd - $25 to a game of my choice that I didn't like but looks GRRRRRRREEAT! (sighnoceros)
  • A steam copy of Space Hulk for the best representation of Weird Al in UHF (in the spirit of Public TV and all) (ClownSyndrome)
  • A steam copy of Thomas was alone for a game that features the best use of the flying stone head from Zardoz (ClownSyndrome)

Almost all prizes come from you guys. If you want to put one up - cash, a gift card, a Steam game, whatever - just say so, and also post some kinda contact detail we can use to direct the winners to you at the end. Prizes can be awarded for ANYTHING... by default, we'll put them toward the 1/2/3rd slots and Gamer's Choice, but if you want to offer a bounty for the best underwater stealth escort mission, or the most convincing kitten simulation, or you want to assign a prize to the absolute WORST animation in a game, whatever, go for it.

Extra complicated prizes:

Ulta posted:

So I to clarify, half of the the games I have offered to will go to the best Twine game (as determined by the judges). The winner will get to chose what games they want. Then the best game made by someone who has not made a game before (as determined by the judges) will get the half of the rest. The second place game made by someone who has not made a game before (as determined by the judges) will get the remaining games. In the event that no one makes a Twine game, then the pool transfers to the no game before winnings. If for some reason, neither of these conditions are met, I'll just post the codes in the thread and hang my head in shame.

Organ Trail
Broken Sword
Anomaly Korea
Awesomenauts
Wanderlust: Rebirth
Little Inferno
Hotline Miami
Tiny and Big in Grandpa's Leftovers
BIT.TRIP Presents... Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien
Reus
Dead Space
To the Moon
Atom Zombie Smasher
Gratuitous Space Battles

Maybe split these up a bit, but I would like to offer a prize for a Twine game and maybe something for "Best First Game"

That's uh... a unique theme idea. Assuming it wasn't using a bunch of pre-created assets and code and the like would that be okay? Obviously would need to do lots more in order to make it work with this years theme but I'm sure a malevolent force could use public television as a means of brainwashing and subversion...

I'm probably being an idiot so feel free to let me know, if not then I'll give it a go again, I'm sure nothing can go horribly wrong!
Yes, that would be fine. It'd fall under the heading of "using pre-existing art and engine", just like other teams might use googled art, or placeholder art from other games, pre-existing engines, etc.

Also, this year's theme came from the GameDev IRC. They did a big brainstorming session, and the result seemed neato to me, so here we are!

Right now, there's a big lady with a... dijurido?... with another lady singing in an Indian style, with a dude doing what I think is a passable imitation of Tuvan throat singing whilst simultaneously playing what is either an electric organ or maybe a theremin in a box? All basically singing/playing on top of eachother.

And then drummers on either side.

The camera man appears to be stoned, and the shot keeps drifting to the mid-point between the Tuvan guy and the Dijurido lady, where there's a lovely flower vase. :what:

(it actually isn't awful - if this were playing in a New Age coffee shop, I wouldn't immediately run into the street with blood leaking from my ears)

I've got a Cosmos idea, was Cosmos public access or PBS? That's largely rhetorical because I don't have any other ideas.
Yep, Cosmos was PBS.

(it's one of those borderline shows - it's long since exploded past its humble, awkward beginnings and I think changed networks... so like, Carl Sagan cosmos? Ok. Modern Cosmos? That's not really to-theme anymore.)

How about a Sierra style adventure game and/or riff on Atari's E.T. where you try to gather equipment so you can air an episode of Wayne's World?
Yes. It's Wayne's World, of course that would fit.

Make sure the scoring is audience-driven, with them having "ICE BURN" buttons or whatever to push for each side of the talk show (that give immediate feedback to the speaker person as well as the rest of the audience), and that could be fun as hell. Gamified Role-Playing Chat Roulette.

It'd make HONK look downright pedestrian. Except that HONK would still be awesome. HONK is eternal. HONK.

It looks like the old SA GameDev wiki might have been taken down by a troll. bbcisdabomb is working on a new one / has a ton of zips from all the entries themselves, but information as to which was from which competition, team page contents, all of that appears to have been wiped. Could also have just been a spambot, who know, but still. :(

If that indeed ends up the case, we'll create a "history" page of some sort where previous entrants can link their old entries up in the appropriate previous year / see how much of that we can reconstruct.

I'm at Denver ComiCon this weekend showing off Hot Tin Roof, hence my silence. Tomorrow's our last day, and then I'll probably be passed out on my couch on Monday, but then I will say stuff in here again.

EDIT: if anyone's still struggling for ideas...

I have a lot of poo poo going on in July so I don't think Holy Wow will have time to make a game. However I think it could be really fun to judge... we have a cool webcam setup now and it would be a blast to put together some sort of livestream thing, like some goons did last year.

Were the google spreadsheet woes of last year solved? I remember the judges complaining that inputting stuff into the doc took a ridiculous amount of time because of weird google issues.
You are now a judge. That means you put on your big boy britches and don't whine about GoogleDocs. :colbert:

(yes, that was fixed midway through judging last year... I had just forgotten to disable the calculations that were in the sheet, meaning a TON of work was done every time a judge entered a single number)

... and, OP is updated with new entrants. Today was nice. I sat and did nothing, and was basically half-comatose the entire day.

The SA GameDev wiki lives again!

Anyone want to do a logo for this year's SA GameDev? If so, we'll throw it up there. If not, we'll remain logoless, like animals.

Had a family tragedy, so when the "THE COMPETITION IS ON!" thread is delayed a bit, please nobody panic. Just start development on July 1st, etc. I'm just scarce online lately.

This is my favorite part of the contest. "Who will post the most polished looking early screenshot that seems to be great progress, only to disappear halfway through the contest / submit nothing and be beaten by the dude that didn't post a thing and came out of nowhere."

It happens every drat time. I always get excited about someone's early results, then they just... disappear. :ssj:

I've been setting up a sweet video streaming thing for when we judge the games... why is open source video streaming software 1,000x better than any other open source software?? Open Broadcaster works so well and allows you to do so much. I really can't believe it's free. I thought this would be a pain to set up, but it was really effortless to set up a bunch of complex scenes, including a thing that feeds a playlist of games from a text file. Anyways, thank you Notch and League of Legends!
Holy poo poo OBS finally has a Mac version! I think I can FINALLY consider Twitch streaming. YES!

(Before this, the only real way to Twitch stream on Mac required a $400 piece of software)
