Of course.

The vast majority of books on Amazon never sell anything for months at a time, if ever. Indie books are particularly at risk of this.

You post here to get feedback. A good 75% of the regulars who post here have achieved some modicum of success in the field. Writers need thick skin to make it in this business - anything said here is going to be much more honest and helpful than anything you get from an Amazon review - and that's assuming people are actually going to buy your title.

What percentage is that from your total sales? Which distributors through Smashwords?

Maybe 10%ish? I'm not sure, I don't include them in my normal sales figures. I consider it free money up until tax time. And I generally put poo poo up everywhere that I don't manually put stuff (ie not AZ or BN, pretty much everywhere else)

Don't beat yourself up about it. Almost every title in the world is taken in one way or another. As long as it's not super-super-generic, it's alright to have some other story with the same name.

Update: There is now confirmation from Scholastic that their titles will be included in Kindle Unlimited under the existing contract they negotiated with Amazon.

As with KOLL, Scholastic will get paid their full wholesale price every time one of their ebooks is opened by a Kindle Unlimited subscriber.

It looks like payouts will be just fine I guess? Unless I'm dumb and am not reading it right.

TTW is literally one of my favorite books and I was literally a crying mess at work when I was reading it at work, and I never cry about anything.

That being said it is in no way a sci-fi book, it is 100% romance with sci-fi elements.

I mean, I'm glad you guys are doing great and I have no one to blame but myself for dropping 66%ish of my sales, but I cannot deny the cold, green fingers of jealousy gripped around my neck.

On the plus side, October finally beat previous month sales so I've got that going for me.

I have pretty much been ignoring Kindle Select for a long time because god forbid I give the Amazon monster exclusivity, I might miss out on the $100/month I get from b&n every month!

I too, though, have dropped 75% on my sales and am pretty anxious to try new things and by golly if people aren't actually partaking in same of my new stories via select borrows. I'm a bit confused though - from the way I understand it, do select books get paid out a set amount regardless of the book price? Ie my .99 stories get paid out the same as the 2.99s?

Back on the subject of KDP Select, is there some easy way to figure out where what the borrow rate for the month is? Amazon says that it's determined each month but I can't find anything current for the life of me. Or is it something that just needs to be calculated once the monthly report comes out?

Amazon hosed up a whole bunch of the 1099s. They are re-sending them and alerting affected people via email. I never get Amazon emails so I'm just going to sit tight until next week, which is when the corrected 1099s should arrive.

Online retailers do this almost every year for me. I got really worried the first year until I realized the correction was for an extra 30 cents.

I didn't submit a correction to the IRS, I'm a criminal.

You may have noticed that we haven't been reporting daily sales numbers for Barnes & Noble this week. We noticed the problem first thing Monday and immediately contacted Barnes & Noble. We’re sorry that we’re just now letting you know, but each day they have informed us the issue would be resolved “today.” Unfortunately, this has not happened.

First, we’re sorry that we weren’t faster to communicate the issue, but we were optimistic it would be sorted out with only a minor hiccup. Second, we want to assure you that the rest of your sales data is being reported on time and accurately. Only Barnes & Noble is affected. Third, as soon as we work out the issue with Barnes & Noble, we will get the sales information to you as quickly as we can. Last, you can rest assured that we will take steps to stop the issue from occurring again and to make our communication quicker if it does.

So please bear with us as we bear with one of our partners while they work out an issue. We will keep you informed about the issue going forward. Thank you for your patience and we appreciate our continued partnership with you.

I have literally asked Amazon to not give me a form letter after one of their dumb mad emails and for them to give me a clear definition of what I'd done wrong. They responded with a form letter. They don't give two shits about us, please don't delude yourself into thinking it's a pleasant working relationship. If they weren't the only real viable ebook retailer I would've jumped off that ship a long time ago.

I'm looking into getting back into writing more consistently and am in need of a new portable writing device. I literally only need two things: a word processor of some sort and internet connection. Does anyone have a suggestion for something I can use at the coffee shop or work or where ever?

I saw a Chromebook for $170 on Amazon, it seems pretty good imo but I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions:

I'm surprised more people aren't NaNoWriMo'ing it up. Is that not really a thing anymore? I'm doing it for the first time and 1666 words a day everyday may be child's play to some but it's loving harrdd for me.

I've been doing this (uploaded from mobile so gently caress knows if it worked properly). Since I've been doing NaNoWriMo, this has been really good at keeping me on track for the 1667 words a day necessary. It's good at telling me what happens when I gently caress off for two days like on 11/6 and 11/7, and it's telling me that when I go over for a few days, I can take a breather. For example, I could piss away the entire day today and still be in the green for monthly word progress.

I realize that this is a really simple thing and probably not helpful to most people but it's worked for me and I haven't been writing consistently for over a year until this month. After I finish the sci-fi romance novel I've been cramming out, I'll probably use this when I go back to romance/super romance.

Amazon has the estimated page length which gives people a rough estimate of what kind of experience they're expecting.
