Kindle Unlimited publishers:
If you check your KDP Report -> Payments page and then click on the May01-May31 2016 links, each one you click will have a drop down detailing your money earned that month. What's new is that in some of these, for some of us, you might see a Multi Month Adjustment. This seems to be a little extra money they're paying us. I seem to recall Amazon saying they would remove pages from the Kindle Unlimited scammers and return them to the pool. I wondered how they would do that, and maybe this is it.

I figured that they just never would do it, so this is a very welcome surprise.

These were all the talk at RWA. I don't know why you think "when we write short stories, they're bad and stupid." I'd personally advise against it because the market just isn't there, but if that's what you really want to do, do it. Just don't expect it to sell like a novel. These Bookshots have access to airport bookstores which is a huge percentage of print sales.

There's no definite point, like 30 days or whatever, where you should automatically decide a book is dead. However, you should be mentally prepared to let every book die at some point. I hate seeing a woman cry and almost nothing will do it like "There is nothing you can do to save this book."

It's pretty sage to assume that trad pub will do nothing for you. Find a mid lister author in your genre who is really happy, chances are they are either very young and naive or very old and unable to learn a new paradigm.

I actually don't know what this is at all.

They're offering select people (not me) a flat $500 for their book to be available on an unlimited basis to Amazon Prime subscribers for 90 days, outside of their one regular borrow a month. So a smaller library of all-you-can-eat titles for people who aren't paying for Kindle Unlimited now. You still get paid for sales but not borrows, no idea how sales rank is affected. It's obviously not worth it unless it's a book that you would consider a loss leader already, like Book 1 in a series.

It is entirely possible to lose also-boughts organically after a while, they just fall off the list. I think that's especially likely for a book well past its 30-day window.

Hey I need to amend this post. If you're doing great and want a program that types words better than Notepad, I guess there's worse things you could spend $100/year on. If you're like most self publishers and you either a) already have a program you like (Wordpad, OpenOffice, LibreOffice are all fine examples, in addition to Scrivner which is paid but costs less) or b) don't have $100/year in spare change to get something another program does, don't spend $100/year on Microsoft's terrible product line.

What took you a year? Outlining? Your first draft? The three months you took off because work had you beat? This is a job for most of us. A mere 250 words a day for 250 days a year gets you more than enough for a novel, and that represents about thirty minutes of work for me. You're never gonna piss off your peers faster in this business than by implying your work is better simply because it took you longer.
