Some fighting games characters have attacks that rise from the ground at a set distance from the character, usually a spike or energy wave. These attacks tend to a) bypass blocks, and b) juggle the target.

Usually it's limited to one or two characters per game, though. Making it a universal base seems odd, but Talton probably ran out of ideas for "different ways to hit a dude."

You could also think of it as more of a literal volleyball spike. Some characters have moves where they jump up in the air and launch a projectile down at a sharp angle. If you ever played Samurai Shodown, Tam Tam is basically made of this.



It's a bit of a weird move, but between that and what Gutter Owl posted, I think you can come up with easy enough justification for most characters to have a "Spike" move.
