And I'm probably full of poo poo on this one because my source is Wikipedia, but I'm pretty sure reverse engineering machines back in the day, even just for fun, wasn't illegal.

It was if you did it to recreate the code, but there's some caselaw about it that says it's not illegal if the people who reverse engineer it aren't the ones who recreate it (clean room approach or something) hence why they hired her.
