Dimitris

"Grab that!" Dimitris yells to Melody, and stands up quickly, looking from the men who attacked the cops to Jason for a split second before running over to him. "Where are you hit?" he asks, as he allows Jason to put his weight on him as he tries to pick him up. "We've got to get out before we patch you up, we can't fight that many".

"Arm and side I think," Jacob answers weakly, accepting Dimitris' help. "We can't outrun them - we need to put something between them and us."

Jacob shakes his head, the wooziness starting to subside. But now his arm is starting to hurt, bad; it feels like a growing burning sensation surrounding the hole through his left bicep. Funny, he thinks, matches the one in my side. The pistol is firmly grasped in his right hand, but his left arm is totally useless and any attempt at moving it results in nothing but shooting pains.

A quick glance around the platform provides few obvious ways in or out; nobody is meant to enter through anything but one escalator around the corner from the one that they came down, and they're not meant to exit except on the escalator that's now covered in what are, for all intents and purposes, zombies. The crowd has mostly fled by this point, with most of them having jumped off the platform and run across the tracks.

Something clicks in Dimitris's head as he watches the crowds. The other platforms are gradually emptying as citizens flee the gunfire or the massive horde that is now beginning to close in. There are no trains between their platform and the one across the tracks.

Can the group climb down the platform and then back up onto the next one?

Bardlebee has not made any posts on the forum in nearly 3 days, so I will be GMing Melody's actions to keep the game going.

Melody quickly glances at where Dimitris was pointing, and spots the big black rifle sitting on the concrete next to her. She scoops it up by the pistol grip with one hand, and it's surprisingly heavy; it must weigh nearly 10 pounds. Warren grabs Amy and, holding the improvised bandage like Warren demonstrated, begins moving her toward the two remaining men in the group.

Dimtris hefts Jason up as best he can and calls out to the others "I've got an idea! If we can get to the other side of the tracks we can put a train between us!" He moves toward the other platform with Jason as best he can "We can get you help soon" he says to him as he starts out, casting another glance over at where the cops were standing just moments ago.

drat, nobody can remember Jacob's name in a stressful time!

Dimitris carefully helps Jacob as he lowers himself down, and then he and Warren help Amy down as well; while it's only a few feet, a fall onto the hard metal tracks could prove disastrous. Thankfully, the two formerly human monsters eating the cops' faces are too wrapped up in their meal of man to chase after them and the rest of the horde is too slow at untangling itself. A few are seen trying to crawl toward where Martin lies.

A hop, skip, and a jump across the tracks and the group reaches the next platform. It takes a minute, but the horde is slow enough at moving that everyone is able to climb up onto the tracks. From there, it's just a quick run back up the escalator.

Rolled Perception for everyone

The hall upstairs is almost as crowded as it once was, but it's now open enough that people are able to run around each other; the horde downstairs had visibly chewed its way through the crowd on its way to avalanching down at the cops, and half a dozen people are noticeably laying very still on the slick red tile. Nobody dares to look closer than that.

To the left is a row of shops and restaurants. Most have already gone dark and had their security shutters down, but one Europan Cafe is still open with the lights on even though everyone is rushing past it. It's the only safe haven in this hellhole, at least the only one nearby.

As the group hustles inside amidst the screams, Warren reaches up and quickly rolls the shutter down. The aluminum grate will at least keep out casual attempts at entry.

And there's definitely no shortage of food and drinks either. The cafe was heavily stocked before the group arrived and nobody took advantage of the chaos to loot its coffers, leaving an inordinate amount of food around: pastries and cakes, hot dogs, hamburgers, soups, breads, sandwiches, etc. While not everything is already pre-prepared and cooked, it's nobody will be starving. And with the sheer amount of bottled water (and presumably working tap water) and every kind of non-alcoholic soft drink under the sun, nobody will be dying of thirst either.

For now, everyone is safe.

Except maybe Jacob.

Everyone earns 1 CP at this point. Dimitris earns an extra one for taking the initiative with Augustus and dropping him with a perfect headshot in a stressful situation.

Jacob Barnes

Jacob tries his best not to slow the rest of the group down as they find their way to safety. Once they're inside the café, Jacob winces as sits down on a table and awkwardly tries to remove his dinner jacket. He's starting to look a little pale now. "Would someone mind seeing if there's a first aid kit - I mean there should be, cause there's a lot of sharp and hot things in a kitchen."

As an aside, Jacob and Dimitris have passed their Post-Combat Shakes self-control rolls.

Jacob awkwardly and painfully shrugs off his dinner jacket; with the blood-soaked hole in the left arm and gouge in the left side, it won't be of much use on a date any more.

Jacob's white button-down tells a different story. The whole upper half of his left sleeve is soaked in dark red with a hole straight through, and a section has been torn out of the left side to expose a bloody, deep cut across his ribs. It looks like the first bullet just grazed him, but the shot that hit him in the arm went right through.

Dimitris catches his for a moment before saying "We made it, but that looks pretty bad. Maybe there's a first aid kit behind the counter?" He looks behind the counter and along the walls in the kitchen for any medical supplies.

As Dimitris hunts around for a first aid kit, the crowd outside is a constant source of background noise. Through the shutter the group can see hundreds still running in every direction. And occasionally there's a blood-curdling scream or the distinctive bang of a gunshot where nobody can see it.

Dimitris finds a first aid kit after about a minute of searching, a white plastic box at eye level on the kitchen wall. Meanwhile, Warren is checking Amy's neck wound behind the bloody white cloth.

As everything goes on, the group sees that Melody is looking....well, pretty lovely. Sitting at one of the small cafe tables, her head is down resting on her arms and she's breathing hard. It could be a panic attack, exhaustion, or illness. The rifle she recovered is sitting on the floor next to her.

OOC: minidracula will be joining the game with a new character. Since Ixtlilton has not posted anything in a week and Jacob is still waiting for medical attention, I will GM his actions to get the ball rolling.

Dimitris sets the first aid kit down on the table and pops it open. It's a little overstuffed, but it meets Red Cross standards easily and will be perfectly fine for most kitchen mishaps or minor emergencies. He sorts through the contents and quickly takes inventory:

* 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches)
* 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes)
* 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch)
* 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram)
* 5 antiseptic wipe packets
* 2 tablets of aspirin (81 mg each)
* 1 space blanket
* 1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve)
* 1 instant cold compress
* 2 pair of non-latex gloves (size: large)
* 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets (approximately 1 gram each)
* Scissors
* 1 roller bandage (3 inches wide, 4 yards)
* 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide, 4 yards)

* 5 sterile gauze pads (3 x 3 inches)
* 5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches)
* Plastic electronic oral thermometer
* 2 triangular bandages
* Tweezers
* First aid instruction booklet

Not having much experience with first aid, Dimitris thumbs through the booklet and finds that it handily includes a short, two-page section on gunshots. While it won't give him the steady hands of a trained EMT, it at least tells him in simple terms what to do.

The booklet provides +2 to First Aid rolls and the use of the kit gives +1, giving Dimitris only a -1 for the default roll rather than the usual -4. No Diagnosis roll is needed, as the problem is fairly obvious.

Taking Jacob's shirt off fully reveals the extent of his wounds. His left upper arm is partially coated in dried blood, a ragged hole pierced all the way through by the carbine. The shot that hit his side has left a bloody streak across his ribs; it's not very deep, but painful. Fortunately, it looks like neither wound bled a whole lot after the initial impact; losing any blood in his state would turn this into a bona fide emergency. As it is, he's going to need time to recover the use of his arm....if it recovers at all. The lack of bleeding certainly makes treatment easier.

Dimitris props Jacob's arm up on the table, just in case elevating it above his heart is needed, and then cleans the two wounds; it burns like mad, but better than suffering a bacterial infection during a massive disaster. With the holes disinfected, Dimitris takes the 3 inch bandage roll and wraps several layers around Jacob's arm, then secures it with a few strips of tape. Performing the same disinfecting on his side, Dimitris covers the gash with the largest adhesive bandage he can find.

The whole treatment takes about 10 minutes, and by the end of it the two unsightly wounds are covered and Jacob is feeling a bit better; he doesn't appear or feel like he's going into shock. The M1911 remains on the table in front of him, the slide still locked back. The spare magazine feels like it's weighing him down.

More worryingly, moving his arm is still too painful to even attempt and his hand refuses to open or close more than an inch or two. His left arm, for now, is totally useless.

In the meantime, Warren picks up and slings the rifle on his back and goes to get Melody a bottle of water from the nearby wall cooler. Her breathing is still labored.

Jacob has recovered 5 HP thanks to Dimitris's first aid, putting him at 7 HP. All negative consequences of wounding except for his crippled arm have been healed; the natural rate of healing is 1 HP per day with successful HT rolls, making it a minimum of 3 days (without any critical successes) before he will reach full health and whether or not his arm will recover naturally is confirmed.

This treatment used up 1 yard of the 3-inch roller bandage, 2 antiseptic wipe packets, a few inches of tape, and 1 adhesive bandage.

Jacob sits there and lets Dimitris work; wincing as the disinfectant burns and cursing himself for being so damned stupid. "Thanks, man," he says weakly. Dimitris is finished patching him up, he heads over to grab a sandwich and a bottle of water - his body is going to need something to start replacing all the blood and tissue he lost.
