Phaiston have long avoided the tightly competetive defence sector, but the IRDA Act 2052 has given us the freedom we need to bring out something really special.

If you want me to get excited about a western game you're gonna have to get weird with it. Have a shaman grant me ghost wolf powers or have mad scientists inventing crazy gadgets or something. Otherwise it's just a shooter with three guns, against human enemies with the same three guns, plus maybe grenades reskinned as dynamite.

It never made much of a splash but Hard West was an xcom-style tactics game set in the weird west and it slapped. As well as equipment, you could equip a hand of up to five playing cards. Each had their own effect, but if you made a specific poker hand with them they gave you an extra bonus.

The health mechanics were really cool as well. You had your actual hp, and then Luck, which was akin to a shield. Getting "hit" would deplete luck, and when you ran out you took HP damage and got a refresh of Luck. Hp damage was pretty serious and hard to heal.

I'm just gonna stand here like this, and if I get hit, it's your own fault.

I love that Monster Hunter World depicts a monster being poisoned by having it froth purple at the mouth. It's the perfect level of visible: not overpowering and distracting or taking away from the design, but exactly noticeable enough for you to see it and take pride in it.

I am drowning.
There is no sign of land.
You are coming down with me, hand in unlovable hand.

And I hope you die.

I hope we both die.

Yeah it's a very visually busy game but they manage to signpost status effects nicely.

As of today, FF14 finally joins WoW and SWTOR in MMOs where a raid boss includes fighting on train tracks and dodging incoming trains as part of the boss's mechanics.

That was the Ghost Train last expansion, this is a different boss that summons trains to hit the raid with.

She also launches skyscrapers at the raid.
