I don't understand why Goldeneye, Perfect Dark then Timesplitters 2-3 did this so perfectly and got it down to a fine art, and then it just disappeared. In Timesplitters 2 the Hard levels were like twice as long with totally new areas, enemies, bosses and events, like an Indiana Jones temple in the jungle level and an evil underground lab leading to a zombie outbreak and a helicopter boss fight in the dam level

Killzone: Mercenary sorta scratches this itch. There's the standard campaign, but it also has three alternate modes which add or change objectives for each mission. Aside from the Story campaign, there's the Stealth Operative campaign, Demolition Specialist campaign, and Precision campaign (you're basically a secret space agent and you have to complete a bunch of challenge tasks within a time limit). It doesn't really advance the difficulty related ideas from Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Time Splitters, but it's still nice to see that some developers using them.

Unfortunately, Mercenary will probably always be Vita only.

As for video game names, doing any variation of "gently caress, I" or "poo poo, we" is great.
"gently caress, I took the sword."
"poo poo, we may be too tired to fight."

The Game Grumps are playing Pokemon Sun using the character name 'Dang dude, I' to get around the profanity filter. It's great, because when it doesn't make grammatical sense it just makes everyone sound stoned.

I don't have any of the DLCs (yet), but I just got into The Division during the Steam free weekend and the game has a lot of cool little touches:

-Snow actually gathers onto my character's head and shoulders when it's snowing.
-If I take cover behind a car with open doors and move along the side of it, my character will actually push the doors shut with his hand.
-When I pick up a mission item briefcase thing, if the handle is facing away from my character he'll turn the case around to actually grab the handle, instead of just doing a generic vague pickup animation.
-Explosions set off the alarms in all the surrounding cars
-The sound design in general is just great, from gun sounds to the sound of my character's gear when moving around.

And so on. Also, shooting the gas tanks on the flamethrower dudes' backs will never get old.

In Chrono Trigger, if you know their names already, you can name everyone their real or true name.

It really cuts out a lot of dramatic tension.

I like how when a car is on fire for a little bit, the tires all overpressurize and blow out realistically.

Also, there's so much customization. I managed to dress my dude up exactly as myself at work (but with a shitload of guns).

Wild ARMS 1 played with this a bit; in Jack's introduction, he's breaking into an ancient ruin and the name select screen is also the password for the part of the ruin he wants to get into. Obviously, putting in any old name opens a trap door and the rest of the tutorial plays out, but if you actually put in the correct name (Emiko), the dialogue actually changes slightly and he mentions how weird it is that the password is also his own name. Then he hits a bunch of other random buttons to see what happens and the rest of the scenario plays out as normal.

Snow falls off car windows realistically when you bump into them.

I assume it's one canned animation used every time but it's a nice touch.

Watch Dogs 2 has a set of side quests where you hack an ATM exploit. The rewards are alright, nothing major, but it's so much fun reading the tiny blurb about the person who walks in and deciding whether or not you'll give their money to a good cause, or reward them with stolen corporate cash. It's seriously one of my favorite things in the game.

Left pad or right pad. If you look to your right, you give away their money. The left gives them 200/1000/makes it rain, depending on if it's the first, second, or third choice.

I full agree they look like they would be, but they're actually anything but. The mid-mission chat during stretches like long drives is generally just them shooting the poo poo about their favourite movies. Stuff like who'd win; Alien or Predator?

Anytime they're doing a job, they're all business.

I was tripping balls once and kind of freaking out at my old lady friends place when she decided we should play watch dogs to help calm me down. She had never played it, and neither had I.

It did not calm me down.. Actually it made me much more anxious, it's like the developers designed the beginning just to gently caress with some poor sap who was tripping out. I really can't explain why it messed with me so badly, but if you have played it recently you would probably understand.

That's about right. The game's also properly built around infiltration and being Hacker Assholes, instead of Watch_Dog's approach of "infiltrate and ha-MURDER! KILL! SHOOT EVERYONE!" It's entirely possible to sneak through the game without engaging in a single firefight or even being seen if you plan it carefully.

Rather than having a hit-list of people to kill, the main story missions are just getting in, stealing the big naughty cover-ups major tech companies are trying to hide about how they're abusing customer metadata or are in bed with other corporations, and generally leaving a virus that blasts every screen in the building with DedSec artwork (mostly raised middle fingers) while a choral recitation of "All Things Bright and Beautiful" blasts out of every speaker it can :allears:. It's also freely open about things like Marcus doing dodgy stuff like shooting people, it's just accepted and ignored as a necessary evil because, gently caress it, it's happening to the corrupt tech companies. Wrench is generally implied to do more hosed up poo poo than anything Marcus could anyway.

edit: Here's a good example of what the dialogue's like between missions (or at least, in this case, filling time in while you're stuck on a long drive to your mission destination);

ELECTRONIC OLD MEN RUNNING THE WORLD
In GTA3, the first car you get in is the Kuruma, which is a totally bog-standard boring Toyota-looking family car. I'm learning some Japanese for my honeymoon in 2018 and it turns out that Kuruma means 'car'. It's so generic that they just called it 'car'.

Unfortunately it's been ruined in GTA5 as the Kuruma is clearly the not-a-Mitsubishi-Lancer.

Also from Saints Row, 'genki' means energetic or healthy. :science:

I always liked in FFIX when you go digging for Garnet's real name, which has no bearing on the story at all, and it's not some long fancy or exotic name like you'd expect out of a JRPG, it's just "Sarah".
