Continuing to add to the pile of compliments for the Nemesis system in Shadow of Mordor: Right after finishing the tutorial, I jumped off a small cliff and brawled with the first Captain I saw, Mogrul the Giggler. Eventually two other Captains wandered over as well as a massive monster-looking guy and I booked it back up the cliff. For some reason the monster guy went berserk and stomped all 3 Captains into the ground. An hour later I got stabbed in the back by Mogrul, who had gone up in power quite a bit after I died once. I gained my weird giggling nemesis pretty much right out of the gate by getting his face stomped on by a big monster that ignored me for some reason. And now Mogrul terrified of the big monster guys. For non-SoM chat, I'm replaying Skyward Sword in Hero Mode and this time around I'm taking the time to enjoy the music. I particularly love when Groose comes into the scene, because the music will either a) change to his awesome theme or b) mix his theme into the current music.

I finished Portal 2's co-op mode a little while ago, and it was excellent. The puzzles alone made it worthwhile, but it was almost as much fun killing or messing up my partner for the one-liners GlaDos would respond with. The control scheme was also great, particularly because you had 3 simple commands outside of emoting: stand there, look there, timer starting from 3. While it's easier with voice communication, between those three commands and being able to see your partner's screen, it seems perfectly possible to solve puzzles silently. The best little thing for me though was how Atlas and Peabody are just so expressive. They only have a single eye, but it's very easy to pick up on their facial expressions and body language.

I've been trying out Metro 2033 Redux and I've been loving the fact that I'm able to retrieve throwing knives since they're somewhat scarce. I've been loving even more that the creators put a reflective green strip on the handles of the knives, making it simple to find them in the darkness. Other little touches I enjoy include having to be careful if you engage enemies on the surface, due to your gas mask being somewhat fragile. The mask also has to be cleaned off if an enemy splatters you with blood, and you have to manually replace filters every so often otherwise you suffocate. Between the mask being fragile, having to wipe off blood/replace filters in combat, and gas masks being rather rare but required, you're not able to Rambo everything and need to think before you engage enemies. Also the few bugs I've encountered are hilarious and harmless. I've had windmilling limbs on dead soldiers, Snouts skidding on the ice past me and into rivers, and Daemons that land on invisible cars and chill as I stroll by.

I loaded up Metro: Last Light for a bit the other day, and as much as my friend said that the swamp/church section sucked, I loved it. Jumping from log to land a la "The Floor is Lava" while attempting to not panic and fire off a round every time I flushed a bird-thing from the tall grass was pretty fun. It also helped me learn how to stealth (i.e. learn the max distance I can be hidden from but still nail a Watcher with a throwing knife) more effectively around Mutants. Whichever programmer put a Daemon in that level is a horrible person, though.

I finished Asylum and moved onto City in the Batman series, and from console to PC respectively. The framerate difference is just bonkers, the game is way more enjoyable at 60 fps. And the remote-control Batarang has a targeting reticle!

In Metro: Last Light, the Dark One is disguised as a child at one point because of all the humans around. While he's disguised in the decontamination chamber with the Colonel and Khan, the Dark One waves at the soldiers outside and acts surprised and curious when the spray system activates. I originally thought that he was creepy, but after running around with him for awhile, he's kind of adorable.

In The Witcher, you can set your medallion to react when Geralt is near monsters or sources of magic. If you set it to magic in Act II, then it vibrates violently when you're near a certain NPC. Later on, you find out that NPC is a mage with an illusion spell on. I thought the magic detect was only for Places of Power, so I was surprised about this little detail.

In Batman: Arkham Origins the player can disarm thugs through the gaps in metal fences, but longer weapons like pipes or baseball bats won't go through the fence. Shorter or smaller weapons such as guns and knives will fly right through, however. The first thug I Batclaw'd a gun from kept stomping his foot and yelling at me to fight fair from behind the fence.

To pair with my complaint about Trine 2 in the 'Things dragging this game down' thread, the addition of small tweaks to iconic character abilities is fantastic. The Storm Hammer throw is a great addition to the melee-only Knight, and the Wizard is super viable in combat since he can Levitate enemies. The new traps are also fantastic. I knocked down a wasp nest with my Hammer Throw, only for my Thief friend to shoot the nest midair. The nest was knocked through the air by the arrow, right into my face. I'm not sure if it counted as a death by trap or a team kill, but it was the best death I've seen in awhile.

I'm playing through my backlog of games, and Darksiders II has been pretty great. It plays like a redlined 3D Prince of Persia games, which was a much welcome change from the gameplay in Darksiders I (War felt like molasses to play). The best change IMO from I to II is the improvement on combat; it's more forgiving than the first game and the boss fights feel far more polished. Also it's nice that Despair doesn't bug out nearly as much as Ruin. That Sandworm boss fight in the first game was the worst when you could successfully mount Ruin maybe one in four attempts.

The posters and advertisements get a cool new feature in Arkham Knight once you pass a certain point in the story. As an example, if you look at a poster it might have an advertisement featuring a man putting a necklace on a woman. Look again and it's Bruce Wayne/Batman choking a lady dressed as Joker from behind with a wire. Spoilered for people that haven't played the game, because it's not hard to figure out that plot twist.

The music in Arkham Knight adapts as you stealth around Cobra tanks, based on proximity to and your line of sight to the tanks. The music gets noticeably more intense, with heavier beats the closer you are. It really makes up for the awkwardness of the radar, and makes it way easier to judge your proximity to a tank while simultaneously making you more anxious as you stalk it.

poptart_fairy posted:The music across the entire franchise does this for any stealth encounter, I think. As you start taking out more and more goons, extra instruments and lines of music will begin to swell to a peak. It's a neat way of getting the player excited in sections that can look fairly sedate next to combat areas. I was more excited for the proximity/LoS music adaptation for the Cobra tanks because I'm terrible at using the Batmobile radar to judge distances.

The amount of personality they gave even the lowliest grunts in Costume Quest is fantastic. Every grunt has a unique line when they appear at a house, and one mini-boss is literally a middle management Orc. Complete with tie, clipboard, and megaphone to yell at his minions. Also the Lady Liberty costume has Anthem, the best ability. You thrust your Torch into the air and shine red, white, and blue as a giant American flag appears in the back. Then an eagle cries and flies past, and Lincoln's face fades in and out. During all of this fireworks go off nonstop.

Kimmalah posted:Have you finished the game yet? There are better costumes coming! I think the best for me was the fact that even the gimmick costume that you mainly use to complete a side-quest can be used in combat (and it's really bizarre). A friend who has seen the whole game when her kid played through it (I play child games and I have no shame) said that it's 3 areas, which does seem a bit short with how quickly I went through the first area. I'm hoping that the DLC is amazing enough to make up for it.

In Trine 3 you can test out your controls in the main menu's Settings options in a cute way. When you choose a specific character's control settings, he or she will appear in a puff of smoke and you can jump and run around as you rebind your keys and buttons. This made it very easy to test an effective set of key binds for a rapid Charge -> Shield Glide -> Stomp combination for example.

I just started playing Resident Evil 6 with a buddy, and the combat is so much better than 5 it's unbelievable. Movement is far smoother and faster, and the game drowns you in ammo to help with the bullet-sponge enemies. Also melee is surprisingly viable, and there's nothing like sweeping a zombie's legs in time for your buddy to elbow drop or curb stomp its head.

I have never heard of this Agent Hunt guy, outside of an option to disable him in co-op. But I've honestly just started melee'ing and wrestling zombies over shooting them, partly because the game won't let me shoot zombies that are playing dead. And partly because half of those zombies chose to lay on the floor, just asking to get their heads stomped in. I'm a little sad I can't wrestle the huge fat zombies or the weird skinless guys, just the normal enemies. QuietLion has a new favorite as of 04:54 on Nov 23, 2015 |

More Resident Evil 6 stuff: Jake Muller's campaign is full of terrible design decisions, but his hand-to-hand combat is not one of them. Many of his moves are slower versions of the moves used by Albert Wesker in RE5, and are hilariously effective as a result. The basic charge attack will not only knock a targeted J'avo out from cover, it can chain to 2 other targets and will knock them down. And melee attacks often flinch/stun/knockdown highly mutated J'avo to boot. The only time I use a gun is to shoot the Snake Emblems or if there's enemies that I cannot physically reach. I charge in, knock everyone to the floor, and my partner cleans up with the cattle prod (instant kill on a downed enemy). Teamwork!

I know he's a half-finished character, but I still love Agent from Resident Evil 6. He is entirely silent unless he's being attacked, cannot interact with anything besides going up/down ladders and ledges, and teleports to Ada anytime she uses her Batman gun to zip somewhere. It's like having a gun-wielding ghost buddy that has one helluva right hook.

Just one more thing for RE6 chat: thank gently caress the co-op button (B on 360 controller) doesn't make your character yell COME ON like it did in 5. The characters in 6 still say something when you hit the button, but it's far softer and less obnoxious. 90% of what I remember from 5 was Chris yelling Sheva to COME ON while her path finding failed.

I picked up Dead Rising 3 and the changes the developers made to the Survivors are excellent. You don't have to escort them anywhere, you simply clear out the zombies around them or fulfill a request and the Survivor will give you a chunk of exp and run off. You can have Survivors in your posse scavenge nearby supplies, and if you have a big posse you become a murderball that rolls around demolishing everything. Currently I have 6 Survivors, equipped with a mix of grenade launchers, rifles, and dual mini chainsaws. They killed a Psycho by themselves in about 30 seconds.

I started The Darkness II and there's a few nice little touches. If you use a controller, it vibrates whenever The Darkness is directly speaking to Jackie. It also vibrates violently during conversations that discuss killing/getting revenge on enemy gangs or whenever the Siphon is mentioned, as The Darkness loves those topics. The Darkling is pretty special too, the first time you take control of him, he starts humming the Mission Impossible theme off-key as you climb pipes and stealth above enemies. In combat, His AI tries to flank enemies rather than attacking head-on, and he's pretty good about getting behind and clawing the annoying guys that carry whips and lights.

In Dead Space 3, human enemies have a RIG just like Isaac and Carver that shows their health levels. I thought it was a nice touch even though those enemies are too far away for you to really notice it most of the time. I also really like how there is a stasis sharing weapon perk for cooperative play, as it really comes in handy if one player has a ton of stasis packs in their inventory while the other player has none.

In Dead Space 3, you can set little scavenger bots to collect materials while you're away from a workbench. If you place the bots in the snow, they leave little trails in the snow and even leave a tiny hole if they scoot into a snowdrift. Also they are absurdly powerful; I saw one push a box that was at least four times its size!

The developers recognized that the roughly five-foot range of the silenced pistol was obnoxious in the previous game, so they increased it at least three-fold in Sniper Elite III. In SE2 the pistol was essentially useless because if you were in range to shoot a soldier, you could knife him silently and be ready to drag his corpse away to boot. In SE3, it's quite possible to do missions entirely with the silenced pistol. The greatly increased range effectively offsets the downside that is the reduced amount of background sounds that mask your rifle when you fire it. You're no longer confined to killing enemies that are either <2 meters or >100 meters away.

Devil May Cry 4 has a protagonist named Nero who has a demonic arm, which you can use to climb ledges, suplex demons, ect. I decided to go for NG+ with a friend in Dead Space 3. Near the beginning of the game, Isaac and Carver step out onto a street. As they do so, a cutscene with speeding and crashing vehicles plays in front of them. It turn out that you can actually interact with those vehicles! My Stasis-infused bullets struck one jeep right as the cutscene began, and it gently levitated in the background (then rocketed away) as Isaac was busy losing his poo poo over Ellie in the foreground. I think it's a nice touch that you can interact with cutscene objects, especially since the physics engine has no clue what it's doing in the normal game without Stasis shenanigans.
