"I think I got something that'll get us a step closer. Check this out."

Mali drops the eerie black glove, then her skull on the meeting room table. The skull almost seems to turn ever-so-slightly towards the other artifact. "Found this thing hiding under a cabinet in the lab. Probably got accidentally thrown out when our crooks dumped all their electronics. Which was all broken, by the way."

"It's more than just some fancy tech glove," she says, pointing to the signs embedded in its circuitry. "Take a look at the back of the hand there. That's some real high-level occult poo poo there. I was looking at it going, 'gently caress, I've seen this before', then I remembered. I think it's a symbol of the Cold Ones, which would mean we might have some real serious cult poo poo going on here."

She sighs. "And that could mean just about anything. What do you guys think?"

"If this cult is the entity responsible for planning this whole scheme, we might be able to get some valuable information out of a raid. Assuming they share information to some degree and aren't highly compartmentalized, like some of the cults we've hunted down - er, encountered."

Maddy's sudden enthusiasm at the prospect of violence - and the accompanying glassy-eyed expression on her face - is a bit startling. The twinkling lights of alien eyes peering out from the half-open mouth of her shoulder bag reinforce your suspicions that you may not be talking to Maddy, strictly speaking, at the moment. She sounds a bit too hungry.

"...Although jets make me feel ill." Just the thought of it prompts a gag reflex out of her. "I'm not sure how any of you tolerate flying with those things."

Speaking of Compels!

Agent Cain, how about "Cain, Cursed By God? What Does That Even MEAN?" Well, today it means there was a fuckup with your luggage - yes, even on a private chartered flight - and you arrive at the destination with nothing but the gear you have on you now. There will be enough spare gear around to cover basic needs - like cold weather gear - but you won't be able to spend Fate points to declare you brought things with you. You'll have to source things locally.

Hyun-Ae works her magic and charters a suborbital hop to Delhi. Then its a regional LTA chartered for Lhasa. That's where the regular charter companies stop and the special contractors pick up the slack, as you transit from private corporate luxury to private military austerity. The big tilt rotor transport has enough room for all of you and your gear to make a hop out into the deep wilderness of the plateau. Lhasa felt like the edge of the world. This feels like you've jumped off it. It's hard to believe there could be such a remote place left, but supposedly there are locations out here that have had fewer visitors in recorded history than Europa. After the Cult Wars, Tibet managed to regain its independence, technically, as a member state of the NEG. This was the price China had to pay to secure military aid. The region still hasn't fully recovered from the conflict. Never populous to begin with, the war killed or forced out half of those who lived in the heights of the Himalayan Plateau. It's magnificently isolated.

And then the transport touches down on a rough dirt strip in a tiny town, and the first local you meet tries to sell you a Coke. The wonders of modern logistics.

Still, the only human beings for hundreds of miles are the locals and the hirelings who flew out a couple of all-terrain vehicles and a smaller VTOL - some kind of oddball surplus Chinese fan-in-wing design that looks far too ugly to fly when it's on the ground, and far too rugged to crash when it's in the air. That should be able to get you the last distance up to the target site. The hope is to clear a bigger landing space so the tilt-rotor transport can follow.

As the core expedition organizes itself and unsnarls the various and inevitable confusions, it becomes apparent that Cain's big black footlocker of 'stuff' has gone walkabout. A series of calls eventually reveal its been dropped off a secure Ashton office in Stepnogorsk after arriving on a different LTA, but the guy with the key is off on some kind of hunting trip with the Kazakh interior minister and a shady Russian national. They're completely unreachable for the next four days, and no one has the guts to try and break down the door. It emerges that the Russian upgraded the security as a favor. It also emerges that the Russian's nickname is Rasputin. This neatly terminates that line of inquiry.

Violet was extremely excited about the prospect of travel and seeing new places. However eighteen hours of it is a bit much, and after snapping at the hands of a friendly guide, she's retreated into Maddy's bag and refuses to come out. Shirona looks like she'd considering joining the tager-thing. Flight does not agree with her.

Your bad luck with weather is still holding true. It's already started to get nasty, and it's going to get worse.

Notes
Nearly to your destination. Everyone but Cain can pick one or two important pieces of gear you totally brought along, and Hyun-Ae should give me a little bit of a run down on the people she's hired. I'm still prepping the next part of the adventure.

Hyun-Ae's trying not to set off any red flags with the bean counters back at HQ, so she hired out a small, cheap air crew out of Neo Hong Kong that goes by the name Friendly Skies. It's an ironic name, of course, as all of the money they saved by flying a beater of an airframe went straight into an arsenal that appears to compose a little more than half of the VTOL's total weight. The pilot known as Little Wing is the leader of the rag tag group, and he seems to be exceptionally chill as compared to your standard mercenary badass.

The other half of her budget went towards flying a specialist in from South Korea: an exceptionally dressed, spastic girl that seems far, far too eager to get to killing work. A mild accent gives away the fact that she hails from somewhere in Italy. Based on the cyberarms, autoshotgun, flamethrower, chainsaw, and dog-headed ballistic mask hanging from her back, one would assume that she was one of the overly showy types who crumple at the first sight of any real pressure.

But you know what they say about assumptions. She hasn't introduced herself yet, but it appears that she's fairly familiar with Hyun-Ae.

Shirona opts for a heavy winter coat, some actual pants hiking clothes, and a cute pair of fuzzy boots for the mountain trip. It's all a lot heavier than what she normally wears. Normally, she would wax on about how important it is for a Shinigami to master her mind over the weather, how some of the greatest Grandmasters would stand in the peak of the highest mountains with nothing but a cloth diaper and unshakable will.

A migraine and a patch of diziness doesn't agree with that right now. She should have taken the medicine like that attendant told her to. Ugh.

Her sword rests right at her side, of course. Along with the mundane necessities for a jaunt across Tibet, she also has carries an artifact that she requisitioned from the Academy on the way back from the Dreamlands. She doesn't know exactly what it is, though. It fits well enough into a small, velvet pouch tied up (somehow) in a Solomon's knot, and feels like a bag of (infinite) marbles. It could turn out to be absolutely anything once she undoes that knot and opens it up.

Her superiors insist that she only does so, once she discovers the other side of the breach. It's all mysterious and everything. But she has other things to worry about. Like resisting the urge to throw up.

"If I ever need to take another eighteen hour flight, I am just going to walk the whole way through. Good grief."

Little Wing and a couple of his people have been poking around the internals of the fan VTOL and arguing. This would be worrisome, except it turns out that like most Communist designed equipment, the core functions are extremely rugged. It's the amenities that are fragile, and so holds in this case. The cabin heater is stuck on a low setting, so bundling up is the order of the day.

"Flight 1 to Mysterious Plateau is now boarding!" Little Win calls over. "Who's got tickets?"

As soon as everyone piles in, Little Wing and his co-pilot climb into the cockpit and start up the fans. The roar initially drowns everything out, but once the VTOL lurches into the air it drops to a bearable level, and the flight smooths out. It takes about forty minutes to get over the destination, and Little Wing takes you in an orbit around the target zone.

"We're in the pipe, five by five." He banks slightly so you can get a better view. "If you'll look to our left you'll see what looks like wrecked Cult Wars era military vehicles. Further out are some Cold War Quonset huts, most of them wrecked. And that over there looks like... well it's some kind of stone structure but its more recent than those creepy ruins. For a super isolated plateau, this place sure gets a lot of visitors."

He comes around again. "No sign of that activity you guys said you picked- wait one." You hear the co-pilot saying something in the background, presumably on the crew channel. "Scratch that, infrared shows one of those huts is warm. Someone's still hanging around up here."

Little Wing does another orbit of the plateau, then glides in to hover a few feet off the ground at the selected insertion point. The flight engineer waves you out, helping those who aren't going quite quickly enough. As soon as the ground team is out, the fan-in-wing lifts off again, creating a powerful downdraft that scatters snow and debris as it zooms off to orbit again, providing air support. Thick grey clouds hang forebodingly in the sky behind it.

The air is thin and biting at this altitude, but alchemical pills give you the boost to deal with it, plus you have breathers if you need them. The group of quonset huts is on the other side of the plateau from here. You've touched down in a roughly circular patch of flat ground. Scattered around it and all over the plateau is a surprising amount of detritus of wildly varying ages. Ancient ruins, worn due by eons of winds, stand in strange clusters. Discarded Cult War-era supplies and wrecked war machines - power armor, tankettes, and odder things - slump near them, in a bizarre counterpoint. The artifacts in between, leftovers from Operation OLYMPUS, are in a more organized cluster.

Those sneaking up on the huts should roll for sneakiness. Everyone else, there's plenty of junk up here to check out if you're so inclined.

The VTOL banks a bit as the ground team moves out. Hyun-Ae hears the co-pilot say something in Thai, probably "hey what's that?" and then there are all kind of alarms blaring all around her. "Holy poo poo!" Little Wing shouts. "Something just lit us up with a targeting array! Deploying countermeasures!"

One the ground, things get just as dramatic. Maddy and Shirona have disappeared from view, while Cain is picking his way closer to the hut when all hell breaks loose. One of the Quonsets, not the warm one, suddenly bursts open. A four-limbed metal monster claws its way free, the dome on top of it scanning for targets. A gorilla - a type of assault drone for close infantry support. It has anti-air capability, a grenade launcher, and the strength of a machine.

The infantry makes their appearance a moment later. Dark shapes start moving, popping from one firing position to another near the huts. Another triad pop out of a snow bank near the landing sight, weapons raised. Infantry drones. Cain gets good enough of a look to tell this is surplus, but not as old as the Cult War junk lying around up here.

As the drones move into their attack pattern, shouts rise from the ruins. Men and women clad in a mishmash of cold weather gear clamber out of hiding spots, already firing with their collection of lovely second hand guns. Directing them is a figure in a strange metal helmet, shirtless despite the cold, waving a sword around. Tattoos on his bare flesh glow and writhe as he draws the blade across his forearm, spilling blood on the ground. The space in front of him twists in nauseating fashion as some thing seems to claw its way out of another place. The massive insectoid creature has the inherent wrongness of a summoned creature.

Yeah, there's the ambush.

"Gorilla! Gorilla!" Hyun-Ae shouts, highlighting the drone's location on her team's HUDs and waving frantically from her spot in the VTOL's door. "Mad Dog! Everyone! Take it out takeitouttakeitout!" She ducks back inside as the door gunners begin their barrage, her fingers waggling wildly in the air as she does her best to isolate the locking signal and jam it out.

On the ground, Hyun-Ae's merc pulls down her ballistic face mask. A neon blue AR overlay lights up, giving her a bear trap smile and devious eyes to emote with. [ Yep! Mad Dog moving! ▽・w・▽ ] She slings her chainsaw into her hands, revs it up, and scrambles towards the ruins. [ Moving into chopping range, that is! ]

Creating the advantage Jam with the Best using Systems. I'll likely just keep it for defense against a takedown attempt unless someone else really needs it.

Mad Dog (aka Puppy) will be moving to the ruins, and I'm spending an FP to declare that she has the stunt That's a Bad Thing! - Mad Dog is quite adept at noting her less than favorable odds in any given situation and then outright ignoring them. For one round once per scene, she can completely ignore all advantages (both positive and negative).
