Things that Go Bump in the Night, eh?

It’s been a long drive drive from ACAD to Professor Jackson’s cabin. Four hours, about half of that on particularly rough dirt roads, from the ACAD campus to an the cabin, right around Limestone Mountain, Alberta. A long, probably painfully boring drive, through fields, more fields, some trees, a bit of muskeg, up part of a small mountain, through some more trees, right up to the cabin.

And it’s a damned old cabin, if in fairly good condition for it’s age. Which, as far as anyone can tell, could very well be counted in centuries.

The light is fading by the time you get to the cabin, and it’s already getting difficult to see through the shadows that permeate the woods. Professor Jackson gave your group has 7 days to get your final project in, a horror film. Scripting, filming, acting, everything.

I am Centurion Titus Polonius. And the only trouble I've had is that nobody seem to realize that I'm their superior officer.
Nick Currier

Nick peers through the woods at the cabin as he pulls in, and chuckles. "Looks like this is the place. It'll be good for a horror set, but not so much for living in. Good thing we brought camping gear, eh?" He steps out of the car, and immediately lights up a cigarette. He had been dying for a smoke for the entire drive, but neither Mark nor Thomas smoked, so he had decided to wait until they got there. He shivers slightly in the brisk air, and looks around at the woods, looking for a level spot to put up his tent.

Rowsdower Goldenstein

Rowsdower pulls up after an extremely bouncy trip on the back roads....it was like Afganistan...just without having to worry about IEDs...just moose in the middle of the road. The SUV and all the gear had faired pretty well so far...nothing short of a miracle considering all the crap he packed in. Most of it was logical, well perhaps not the radiation badge. As he got out of the car he noticed that Nick had arrived earlier along with Mark and Thomas. He had no issues with Nick or Thomas. They seemed nice enough, but he never really talked to them in class. He really did not like Mark, partially due to Mark being from Quebec. Mark was probably going to want to include some of the gutter French that they speak in Caillou land in the movie. Mark never shut the gently caress up about Goddard and other really boring French directors in class, never good directors like Lucio Fulci or Ishiro Honda just boring post war French stuff. "Oh well" Rowsdower thought he wanted the A so he was going to try and work with everyone. Thoughts of Mark drifted as Rowsdower saw the cabin..."gently caress me" he thought...it's like Canadian Kandhar...just no Taliban and a slightlyless overall smell with the lack poo poo and rotting corpses that highlighted Khandhar. "Oh well" he thought as he put on a somewhat disengous smile and waved to his class mates and started to unload his SUV.

Outside The Cabin

Nick and Rowsdower's search for a good camping spot points them to the area around the cabin. Within a short distance of the cabin, the normal ever present undergrowth is thin enough so that one could possibly set a tent down. A few game trails run through the same area, along with a path from the end of the road to the cabin.

Rowsdower starts to setup his tent and kit. He tries to get the overall lay of the land to figure out if nearby location shooting might be good or if any potential wildlife dangers might be around. He's also really goddamn hungry and figures if he makes dinner maybe the others will do more of the actual work.

Thomas Brandt

Thomas stumbles out of Nick's old pickup truck, happy to finally be able to stretch his legs after hours of driving. On the plus side, Nick was alright company. Didn't seem like the right person to bring up the 'g word' with, but not many people are. On the whole, Thomas was feeling pretty good about the project; on one hand, Thomas was never a big nature guy. On the other, spooky old cabin, complete with old stuff to paw through! Thomas looks at everyone with their fancy tents and says, "I don't know what you guys are doing, but I'm sleeping in the cabin!" Thomas grabs his stuff, making sure to be careful with the bag that has his camera in it, and goes towards the cabin to set up.

Just goin' in that cabin to dump my duffle bag, but mostly to check it out!

Muted cussing comes from the bed of the beat-up truck, where Mark had gone as soon as the vehicle had stopped.

Quebecoise: "God damnit, I thought I re-tied this poo poo at the last stop! The beer is leaking on... oh, no, that's just the ice. Did I not plug up the cooler? Damnit, there goes half our ice, we will need to pick up more..."

The slender looking man comes around the side of the car with a large blue and white cooler in his hands, a stream of water trailing out the side as he strains to bring the weighty object up to the cabin steps, speaking in a strained, and slightly accented voice.

"Is the cabin intact enough that we can store the foodstuffs inside, or do I need to improvise a bear locker of some kind? I don't think I remembered to pack rope..."

Outside the Cabin

Rowsdower gets his tent and kit set up without a problem. A quick look around reveals no real tracks but a few worn paths around the cabin. There's not much around, aside from deep woods, and an outhouse about fifteen yards north of the cabin, mostly obscured by trees.

A quick look at the outside of the cabin shows Mark that the cabin, despite it's age, is fairly solid.

The Cabin
Thomas opens up the cabin and sees... Not a whole lot. It's pretty dark. A few seconds of letting his eyes adjust reveals a small front room, with a stack of wood, a wood cookstove, a wooden table, and a small selection of canned goods on the shelves. Two doors on the back side of the room lead further into the small wooden building.

The table is mostly bare, except for an old lantern, covered in rust, and a rusty metal tin of some sort.

Thomas Brandt

Thomas sets his heavy duffle bag near the door and shouts, "Hey guys, if you want to start a fire there's already chopped wood in here!" Nothing too neat in here, but Thomas takes a somewhat closer look at the rusty tin to see if it'd be a good prop before checking out one of the doors leading further in.

Stanley Zubizaretta

Unlike the SUV and pickup truck, Stanley Zubizaretta's vehicle was noisy as all hell. The black 2005 Honda Shadow rumbled down the dirt paths and open fields, Stanley barely keeping the bike steady on terrain it was never meant for.

Pulling his vibrating noise machine up next to the pickup, anyone would notice an immediate clash of colors on the rider. Stanley's black, full visor helmet matched his motorcycle. His orange hunting vest and olive drab cargo pants....not so much. The engine grumbles to a stop, letting Stanley semi-awkwardly stretch off and hang his helmet on the handlebars; riding for hours, followed by a bumpy off-road trip, is not fun on a motorcycle.

At least it didn't mess his looks up any. Stanley Zubizaretta was not a bad looking young man.

He walks into the cabin, a large canvas duffle bag over an orange drawstring backpack to blend in with his hunting vest. He drops the duffle slightly gingerly on the floor, careful not to damage his disassembled rifle or the collapsible boom inside.

"Well, it's.....homey."

He heads further in, opening up the door closest to him. Is there a bedroom around here?

Outside the Cabin

Rowsdower is really goddamn hungry and figures if he makes dinner maybe the others will do more of the actual work. Rowsdower. Rowsdower also realizes that he forgot to bring a shovel and any outdoor toilet system. So he decides to investigate the outhouse and see if it's in anyway functional or better then taking a poo poo the woods the old Teddy Roosevelt way. After an interesting experience in the crapper. He takes out both his rifles a Chinese M14S. which Rowsdower has been replacing the parts (except the receiver, so no illegal F/A mods or length) with an old USGI parts kit he liberated from an American Armour in Afghanistan. He checks it and the magazines he has for any issues (pinned surplus USGI mags). He also checks over his IWI Tavor and .50 Beowolf "Handgun" magazines for any issues. He then loads the magazines and places the guns inside his tent.

He starts cooking a meal for the group Cooking 12. Shitter Inspection Survival 12. Rifle Inspection and Loading 12

Nick slings his backpack over his shoulder, and then pulls his shotgun from behind the seat of his truck. He nods a greeting to Stanley as he roars up on his motorcycle. Nick glances over at Rowsdowser, and his eyebrows go up as the man brings several assault rifles into his tent. "You know we're not making an action movie, right? What the hell do you need all those for?"

Outside the Cabin
Rowsdower begins working on a simple meal with his assorted cooking gear. It's largely a success, as much as canned franks and beans can be. A brief inspection of the outhouse reveals that it's an outhouse. The floor is solid, and it's made from sawn planks.

The Cabin

Thomas's look at the rather rusty tin show it's full of a fluid. Kerosene maybe, judging by the smell, but the label is long since worn away. Opening the door on the left reveals another mostly dark room. The small room, (barely 8 feet long and only about 5 feet wide) was obviously once a bedroom. There’s still a rather short bunkbed built into the wall. The far wall has a small locked desk, made of what appears to be solid iron, with two separate locks holding the lid down. The surface of the desk of covered with deep scratches, cuts, painted patterns, bits of wax, and a rather large knife with an antler hilt.

Stanley, on the other hand, find himself standing in the largest room of the three, with a good sized wooden bed frame that’s left bare. A bedside cabinet has an unlit candle in a very, very dusty metal candle holder sitting on top of it. Shelves line the walls, with a few more rough cabinets around the room, probably for storing clothes. There’s also a rather large iron-shod wooden box with a hefty padlock on in.

There’s a ‘relatively’ new bearskin rug on the floor. It’s probably dusty as all hell, but even the most untrained eyes can tell you it’s a lot younger than the cabin.

I am sleeping in my tent until we can spend some time cleaning this place out, otherwise who knows what kind of insect bites and allergies I will wake up with."

He walks in and takes a look at the scenery, and looks at the bunk bed; still got any bedding, and would it fit an adult?

Inside the Cabin: Bedroom

Rowsdower manages to open the lock after nearly six minutes of work. Even with good skills and tools, the darkness and the complicated lock takes time. Cracking open the wooden box reveals a pile of assorted clothing, mostly flannel and jeans, a bandoleer with 10 shotgun shells, and a very, very old looking double barrel shotgun. There's also eight unlabeled jars inside. Four with red liquids of various shades(one of which looks like blood), three packed full of various kinds of dried plants, and one that appears to be empty.

Inside the Cabin: Children's Room

Thomas' examination of the knife only shows a few things: it has a hilt made of some sort of antler, it's sharp, and it looks like it's been through a wood chipper in the past. It's a large, bowie-style knife, with a blade about 8 inches long. It obviously isn't made of steel, judging by the silvery colour and the fact that it weighs nearly six pounds.

Stanely's estimate of the desk is also a little off: It's probably closer to three hundred pounds. The lid alone may very well be a hundred pounds. The bunkbeds are bare, and could fit an adult, given they didn't mind their feet hanging over the edge.

Roland T. Dapperman: The wax and paint are both coarse, almost like they're full of salt. Most of the deep scratches and cuts form some kind of lettering, or geometric symbols. One pattern you recognize as something that's used in seances, though everyone says it's for a different purpose. The most common explanation is that it's a ward of some sort.

Just for convenience, could you all use italics to do OOC stuff? Also, feel free to read the spoilered bit, but don't metagame this poo poo. Unless Roland tells you about what's in the spoilered section, you don't know about it.

paint: rough(salt?)

Thomas was thrilled; while he entertained the notion of the cabin having something this cool in it, he didn't actually think there actually WOULD be. No telling the others though. They would think he's some kind of weirdo. Thomas moved to check the desk's locks. If someone went through the trouble of doing this, there HAS to be something neat inside!

I'm gonna turn on my lantern for light and examine the desk's two locks. I've got 10 lockpicking if that matters.

Stanley lets his curiosity get the better of him and picks up the knife. He's shocked at the unusual weight.

"Dude, this thing is heavy as poo poo. Either someone filled this with lead, or that blade ain't made from what it looks like."

He handles it gingerly. While it would be the badass thing to twirl it and wave it around, it weighs as much as a full on sword. He'd probably break something if he dropped it.

"Find any good spots to use as a set? And at some point we should figure out some kind of plot. Rowsdower - Inside the Cabin: Bedroom

"Goddamn was that lock a pain in the rear end...but man was it worth it, cause I got a free gun and ammo..well it's not mine, I'm only looking at it." "Still I should mostly likely make sure that the gun is actually safe to use or if it's just a wallhanger (is it a legal length, was it cutdown) and if the ammo even works with this gun" Rowsdower thought to himself.

Somewhat more...disturbing is the jars. Generally finding a gun lay around isn't that odd, I mean it is Canada, finding jars containing unknown plants and what appears to be human blood...is odd and potentially terrifying. "I better let everyone else come and see this."

Rowsdower calls to Thomas and Stan in the Childs bedroom to come in and take a look at the jars, his new shotgun, and the clothes and to bring the knife for him to look at and see what it's made of.

Inside the Cabin: Children's Room

Thomas's inspection of the locks reveals them to be fairly simple. They may have been high-quality when they were made, but that was obviously a long time ago.

Rowsdower discovers the clothes are normal clothing, if with an abundance of flannel and jeans. The shotgun is an unlabeled old double barrel, with full stock and 20 inch barrels, and the shells are unremarkable; 000 buckshot 12 gauge shells. In red plastic hulls. The metal the knife is made of isn't anything common or readily recognizable.

Stanley's attempt at recalling where the Professor bought the cabin works out; he bought the cabin a few months ago, with all of the former owner's possessions. He's only been to the cabin once to check it out.

It's June 11th, about 8pm. You've still got about an hour of workable light before it gets dark in a hurry.
