DRIVE BY RANDOM TITLING! YOU MAY BE NEXT!
I discovered a silver lining to getting disconnected repeatedly over the weekend: many of the standard challenges that require you to sortie a certain number of times seem to count sorties started as opposed to sorties finished.

It's time to kick the tires and light the fires, Big Bird.

The Typhoon is kinda disappointing to be honest. It has a really low-capacity gun and I can't understand what the point of its SP weapons are. They're basically normal missiles, but with slightly greater range and slower speed and can only lock on to aircraft.

Yeah it does. I'm really starting to question how useful those challenges are, though. They all give research reports, and that doesn't seem to be the bottleneck. So, for example, it's worth it to use a forced sortie on a Moby Dick even if that means you won't have enough fuel to get 10x in 12 hours.

Honestly most of the a2a specials seem kind of lovely except for putting extra damage on B-2s or Moby Dick, since their damage doesn't scale with plane rank, and with the limited item slots on most fighters it seems wasteful to buff your specials instead of your plain jane missiles. If it weren't for the free helo kills on Pipeline Destruction, the 4 4AAM kills in the F-16C every day would be pretty frustrating, since you need 2-3 missiles to hit a regular fighter to kill it. Missiles that you can't select targets on and fly slower and home in worse than your regular ones. Only QAAMs and SAAMs seem to be worth a drat.

Incidentally if you have people on your team who are flying F-16Cs, you're not, and you shoot down the perfectly lined up helos at the start of Pipeline Destruction, you're a dick.

I really like the 6AAM on my F14-ZP-. With the right approach I can murder the poo poo out of anything in the air with them, and I loving love the end of Tokyo when harriers are taking off and I can wreck whole flights of them with one shot. I steal a lot of kills with those things.

Weissritter
Jun 14, 2012

Actually, I think the 4AAM is pretty good, due to the ability to chain fire at a single target, or double at 2 targets. They also have much better range that your standard missiles. Also, dumb firing them into hardened ground targets is fun too.

Research basically works as such: If there is one thing you want researched, and anything else you don't care about, the game will know this and focus entirely on the latter. Research reports are useful because they are the only reliable way to research things you actually want and will use without gimping yourself by continuing to fly when there is literally nothing else to research other than what you want (I am assuming research progress on any given item per sortie does not increase when there is only one item left to research).
Getting to First Lieutenant makes it even worse because now upgrades for your special weapons are a thing, so you'll suddenly have six or seven of those sucking away research that could be going to a plane you really like or that one part you need to make what you have unstoppable. And they follow the above logic for determining priority, because of course they do, so you'll be wanting the SAAM or FAEB to upgrade and the game will be pouring all the research into the HPAA you haven't used since the exact instant you bought anything better than the starting F-4E.

Buffing the standard missiles really is the way to go. Save for Moby Dick pursuit missions, there aren't any levels that are purely air-to-air or air-to-ground, so (especially for fighters, unless you're making a dedicated Moby Dick killer) it's worth more to focus on buffing the weapons that can hit anything.

That said, I'd like to think each plane's attack damage stats play a role in the power of the SP weapon, and so would get better as you get planes with higher stats. I could be wrong, though! I also assumed the F-16 Desert Rock could one-shot tanks with standard missiles like the Mirage 2000-5 can because it has a higher ground-damage stat, or that the Advanced Hard Points part would give me more bombs to drop like it loving says it does, but I was wrong in both cases.

EDIT: Namco, fix your loving netcode already. I've been dropped from 80% of the games I've tried to play today, most of them before I can even get into the game.

And also fix whatever bug just made everything on the main menu other than the slowly-rotating image of my last-used plane disappear after the fiftieth time I lost connection before I could even take off.

You want that Phoenix Emblem? Too bad. It was the major prize in the Mercenary King Tournament. Only the Top 1000 Ranked Players got that.

Good stuff as usual guys. Maybe one day we'll be able to make the miracle happen and encounter Moby Dick Pursuit III in a Goon Room. Lord knows if I see it in a room I made, I'd be kicking pubbies left ant right to get as many goons as possible in. And wouldn't you know it, the only time I ever get MVP in the Goon Rooms reliably IS Whale Hunting. If only it was easier to tell when all the fighters are gone so I can safely aim for the Cockpit or Core of Aigaion. At least I can handle the Gyges and Cottos from flying these missions enough times.

Still need to figure out my (probably) two Primary planes for the long term. This is what I get for having Infinity be my first Ace Combat. Indecisiveness when it comes to planes.

Yeah, I was sad when I found that out. Not that it mattered because I didn't start playing until after that tournament had ended. I still think it was an odd decision to make a top prize for a tournament the logo for a 22 year old PS1 game.

I have the opposite problem with plane selection though since the earlier games spoil you for plane selection. Now I have to force myself not to open up the whole tech-tree just because I'm used to having the choice of 3 F-15s, 4 SU-27s, and basically every other prototype airframe to be built since the F-4.

Edit: 19 years old. The arcade version is 22 years old.

I'm probably gonna sit this next mini-tournament out, I'm hoarding stocked fuel and just playing with supplied for the most part. Hopefully I'll have saved up enough fuel from all the daily events to be able to burn it all on the next tournament with a reward I really want.

I'm sure they'll at some point make at least a Block-2 Morgan and that NPC plane from the campaign. Probably also include other series favorites like the Su-37, Su-47, and F-15 MTD.

I do admit that I really like that this game doesn't let people directly pay real money to buy things in the game. Even if you buy a bunch of fuel and contracts you'll still need to play the game to get anything out of them. That way when S-Alpha is owning my poo poo I know that its because he's a better pilot and not because he opened up his wallet. Even the fuel system isn't unreasonable. This is the first free-to-play game I've ever really played but it doesn't seem to have any of the stuff that makes me not like FTP.

Either the game just really hosed up, or I met a cheater.

I played a game at Dubai, and when we were selecting our planes, the preview for everyone else's planes showed no custom parts, emblem, or even nicknames. This apparently wasn't just a glitch with icons or anything, either, because I was dealing reduced damage, had less ammo, and was missing more often than normal - we actually had none of our equipped parts working. On top of a good half of the players dropping across the game, we got our asses completely handed to us. Host scored nearly 50k, I barely broke 20.

EDIT: Still made enough credits from that that I could afford the F-15E. And, after fighting the game for an hour to let me play again, I did just as well with it as I would have with the standard. These 4AAMs could be so much better, though, they barely track targets or deal damage any better than the standard missiles.

The real use of 4AAMs is against slow-moving, high-score targets that you need to killsteal shoot down quickly so the other team doesn't get to it first. Like the IL-76 jammers in Aerospace Center or the SR-71 that sometimes spawns in Pipeline Destruction. You can light off all four of them at once and add in both your regular missiles to vaporize them in about three seconds.

Also, dumbfiring them against ships or the Scinfaxi is pretty fun too. Or murdering those poor Harriers in Tokyo.

Yeah, 4AAMs are pretty awesome, I've finally decided to switch back to them from sniping with HVAAs. They're pretty great at everything, and a quick fire and forget into a crowd can turn up some cool surprises. And if you're close enough to the spawn point at the start of the helicopter emergency mission, you're pretty much guaranteed to get MVP with the 8-12 targets you just shot down.
