When I was 17, my father was so stupid, I didn't want to be seen with him in public. When I was 24, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in just 7 years.
I think whether or not fans have impact really depends on the player. I would say there's quite a few who don't notice but then you have guys who claim it really impacts them. I guess on one scale is Jalen Rose who claimed crowd love or hate was pretty much what made him tick, and then on the other end is Kobe who claims he doesn't hear the fans at all.

Some people really like performing and feed off the energy from a crowd. It can help to increase their confidence, I guess.
