I bought the gog.com version of this a few weeks ago but hadn't had a chance to really play it. Thread totally bookmarked.

One of the best times I had with this game years ago was playing as the religious faction. They suck at science, so I cut all my research focus to zero and used the probe team bonus they get to steal all the tech I needed. This let me concentrate all my efforts on churning out hordes of cheap military units with the +25% attack bonus they get from religious fanaticism.

By the time the late game rolled around, I had heavily infiltrated all the other factions with probe teams, and constantly sabotaged their planet buster production while building up a huge stockpile of my own. I equipped all of my military units with nerve gas as well, and when the time came, I unleashed my massive genocide extermination campaign, nerve gassing and nuking the holy poo poo out of everything.

Reading this thread is making me regret not ever playing the SMAX expansion with the new factions. I only ever played with the original seven. Playing as the sea pirates or the socialist drone faction sounds pretty sweet. I love those custom factions as well.

I'm starting to get back into this game and I played a quick game as the Gaians on a tiny map to ease myself back into it. I loving suck at it, even on low difficulty, and had to reload savegames a couple of times when that shithead Pravin Lal attacked me almost right away with the starting scout teams, but eventually I beat it, overwhelming the entire planet with unstoppable swarms of mind worms. I don't know how you could beat it on the hardest difficulty.

My favorite part of that last game though was the fact that Morgan started out on a tiny island one square in size, surrounded by ocean for quite some distance.

Does anyone play the default Planet map, or does everyone just prefer randomized maps only?

I was just playing a SMAX game as the Free Drones on the default Planet map.

It's been a really tough game and I'm still not finished with it. I started out right next to one of the alien factions, who attacked me almost right from the start of the game. Thankfully the Data Angels, who I also started next to, have been great allies throughout the whole game and helped me force them back.

It's loving hard though because Aki-Zeta-5 started out with a whole continent all to herself. It's loving brutal that she gets a +2 research bonus while I get -2. All the other factions have spent the game fighting and grinding each other into the dirt while she builds this ridiculously powerful empire on her continent. She's built virtually every secret project in the game except for like one or two.

I can't steal her tech because she built the Hunter-Seeker Algorithm, and her military is highly advanced compared to mine. I've been stuck in a long, brutal war with her for ages. The good news is that I've been able to make some headway using my glorious socialist mode of production to out-produce her and swarm her continent with hordes of cheap lovely units. The casualties have been extreme, but the tide has slowly been turning in my favor.

I've managed to seize a couple of her bases and get a foothold on her continent, but the bad news is that she's building planet busters now and I'm scared. :ohdear:

Just built swarms of needlejets. Swarms and swarms of needle jets. Once you annihilate every unit outside of a city, she'll abandon trying to build Planet Busters. And once you bomb all her terraforming into oblivion, her economy will tank really hard. If you have the tech for Fungal Payloads, have whole cities dedicated to building those, they're absolute monsters when used against the AI.

I have a lot of needlejets, but my offensive tech sucks and she likes to build lots of AAA troops. I really do need to bomb her terraforming a LOT more though. Maybe that's where I'll shift focus, since the war around my beachhead has turned into a bit of a stalemate. I've been using my jets to bomb the last remaining alien faction before they get too strong. I don't have Fungal Payloads yet.

It's come to down to three big superpowers - me and my Data Angel allies, Aki Zeta-5, and that alien faction. All three of us have our own continents now. The Planet Cult was wiped out very early in the game, before I even had a chance to meet them. The Pirates have done gently caress-all throughout most of the game, and are weak as hell.

I really like the default map. My continent is the long skinny one with the freshwater sea in the middle, and the front line against Aki Zeta-5 goes right down the middle of the Garland Crater. The Battle of the Crater has been a glorious one indeed. Not one step back!
