These Born Alive bills are pure theater in response to the Fox News fever dream sparked by misreporting VA/NY state legislation. They have no practical impact as they are already covered by existing state and federal laws as well as professional standards of care BUT let this serve as a good reminder to national Dems who think that Texas Latinos are a monolithic D bloc. Had the state GOP followed the Bush model of reaching out to Latinos and passing reasonable immigration laws, they would probably be a pretty reliable Republican voting bloc. Alas, their racism though.

Just the slightest bit of outreach to the rather conservative South Texas Democrats could keep Texas reliably red for the next 40 years but instead the GOP would rather pander to some old white guy in Midland who thinks all Spanish speakers are going to steal his lawnmower and rape his daughter.

Could be. Could also be he's worried about a chamber flipping in 20 and he knows it's time to get out while the getting's good. Also could be his instincts remain good and the final uppance for all these villains will never come and Patrick will be on top forever. I just know that his style has become a whole lot more Kavanaugh-esque since Trump got elected which indicates to me he's performing for an audience of one.

I saw him testifying last night, but only caught the tail end of his rant. It was something to the effect of "You can choose to vote with the Devil, but my God is the Christian God and he will strike vengeance on those that defy him."

Also good lord y'all should look at the House state affairs agenda from yesterday. I assume this is what the Governor was there to protest

HB 1183 Johnson, Jarvis
Relating to abolishing Confederate Heroes Day.

zoux

Yeah it's the Fox News Comments Committee mostly but that seems to have an unusually dense number of radioactive issues like Zedlers, but also Anchia had a straight up SB 4 repeal. Maybe this was "get a hearing on your bill so you can write a press release about it and also the media will talk about your bill despite it's DOA status" day

Hmm it's almost like this sudden laser focus on human trafficking by the state GOP isn't a good faith concern for the wellbeing of victims but as a strategy to push harder immigration standards and pass terrible racist legislation in the name of protecting victims :thunk:

It's the worst committee. It's where most bad bills originate. And they picked like...at least 4 different controversial topics last night to cover - abortion, confederacy, immigration, and LGBTQ rights. It was a given it would go until the morning. Just pick one infuriating topic at a time, State Affairs.

I have a colleague and friend who advocates for sex trafficking survivors as someone who has survived it, and she's been doing great work this session on the topic. I don't know her thoughts on it, but that's been my fear with the focus on human trafficking this session.

I work on mental health advocacy where a lot of legislators (especially senate) only talk about it in the context of school shootings.
