Really liked the premiere, but the trailers for the rest of the season are weird. Also the time skipping was awful.

Action in the pilot was awesome. Let's hope they didn't blow the entire budget there.

The actor playing the captain was so terrible. He's Bill Adama's retarded cousin.

Well, maybe him and the horrible evil bad guy plant. Why does ever show need one of those now? I laughed when the crew was assembled for the bad news/super inspiring speech from the captain and then the show skipped right over it. I bet they filmed it and the actor couldn't deliver so it was cut. I didn't know Michael Bay was involved until this thread. I also didn't know that mother loving Jayne Cobb was the XO either. Those things kinda balance out at least.

Watched the pilot and really enjoyed it. I love post-apocalyptic stories in general, and I thought the pilot delivered. Having Adam Baldwin on the show is a huge bonus. Of all the new shows I've watched in the last couple of days, this was definitely my favorite.

I was about to complain about the lack of character bios in the OP, then I realized that would be silly since they're obviously cut from so much cardboard stock and drawn from central casting. That said, for some reason I really enjoyed the pilot and look forward to the rest of the show. It's so seamlessly and unapologetically what it is that you can't fault it. I reckon it'll be fun.

I haven't seen the pilot yet, did they explain how this ship is on extended haul? Destroyers use a bunch of conventional few, and the only nuke cruisers are Russian as far as I know.

Supposedly they sailed all the way from Norfolk to the Arctic, hung out there for four months, then sailed to the coast of France without refueling, but were running on fumes at that point. They then obtained fuel and food by looting The next episode involves them resupplying at Guantanamo. So they're thinking about supply issues, but I have no idea how realistic they are being. Anyone know what the range and endurance is of an actual destroyer is? Because I'm pretty sure they can't stay on-station for four months without resupply. Maybe they were getting food drops from aircraft on the ice? Who knows. Another unanswered question: The Russians in the pilot showed up in gunships. Where the heck did they come from? They don't have that long a range, that means there were at least a couple of Russian surface ships in the area, if not an actual base. Something bigger than just one destroyer, that was a lot of helicopters.

I don't think warheads squawk their type.

I don't think warheads squawk their type. Militaries spend a great deal of effort and money learning to identify different missile types very specifically by their radar signature and how fast they're traveling, among other things. Presumably the radar operator in CIC is trained to identify such things.

The inside of the ship looks good, like they actually toured some ships then tried to replicate what they saw. I've been stabbed and bashed against a bunch of things sticking out of the bulkheads like random screws and such. I wasn't on a destroyer but I was on a LHD and we got resupplied a lot. I can't imagine that they went four months without needing one. If I recall correctly though sub's actually take on a couple months worth of food. Identifying the missile is probably possible but I really really don't think they would have. The scope dopes (operations specialists) in the CIC used to call us all the time in the tactical air control center to identify regular passenger planes and one time spent 10-15 minutes trying to bully a drone on mission into radioing them back before we told them what it was. TV and movies always have officers manning things when usually officers are screwing off and its some lowly enlisted shmuck having to stare bored at the scope.

Yeah, I definitely don't want to go too deep into "how real is this", because obviously storytelling will trump realism whenever necessary, and I'm fine with that. But I'm honestly curious about the capabilities of actual destroyers, just because they're neat. That said... ...I'm also a little surprised the author of the source material didn't go with a nuclear sub, for exactly this reason. A sub makes a lot more sense as a candidate for surviving an epidemic, since they are hermetic by design, they are intended to operate at sea for 90 days routinely without resupply, and they are well known to do arctic operations, including science missions. I mean, I guess with a sub you don't get a helicopter, but who cares? IIRC some modern subs can field reconnaissance drones, some interesting stuff could be done with that. OTOH, bullets are easier to come by than missiles and torpedoes, so there's that.

The scientist lady was on Conan a few nights ago (that's how I learned this existed), and she said the Navy helped a ton with filming. I don't see them handing over a nuclear sub the same as eagerly.

Right... Why were Russians flying 2 MH-53 Super Stallions. Other than the James Bond style snow mobile scene, it was alright. The time skips between the north pole and France then to America was annoying.

But it lacks the TFR/FLIR pod of a Pave Low And best of all it has the Super Stallion 3rd engine and exhaust in the port side. It bothers me because they get such special consideration from the military then they dress up US helo as a Russian one. It's lazy I only sperg out at aviation poo poo. Let me have this
