Help Wanted - Security at warehouse

The job was a simple security position. Besides the fact that the ad made it clear that this was an armed security job, the position shouldn’t be difficult. Maars, Michigan? Its in the middle of no where. What possible problems could there be? A stray bear or some dumb hick hunter? The worst problem will probably be boredom.

The ad for the job didn’t talk much about the company doing the hiring or what was to be guarded. After initial contact was made with the company, it became apparent the company’s name was Basorus and they needed people for a night time security position guarding a warehouse property. Details about the warehouse, its contents, or further details about the assignment were not forth coming. The contact said that such questions would be answered when the prospective employee got to town.

Information is not knowledge.

Research on Basorus turns up that they are an Importer/Exporter company with many subsidiaries in different fields. The company headquarters is in New York City and it has offices throughout the United States and abroad. There are also other smaller facilities as well. One of them is located in Maars Michigan.

After applications and pre-employment forms are filled out, the prospective employees got a phone call letting them know that they were hired. The Basorus rep on the phone gave instructions on how to get to the town and requested that new hires arrive June first for orientation. New hires were asked to meet at a local restaurant in Maars, Maars Town Diner at five p.m. A Basorus Human resources person would meet them there to start the orientation.

Midway upon the journey of our life
I found myself within a forest dark...

Driving to Maars is an unexciting drive through a thick forest. Except for the road there are few signs of people around. Occasionally houses can be seen through the trees. At times the trees look as though they are trying to reclaim the land from people with the way they crowd the road.

When the sign for Maars comes into view, the trees relent to civilization. A handful of businesses border the road. The buildings look as though they’ve been standing since the sixties. None of the businesses look busy, most of them look closed (possibly closed permanently). At the intersection into town there is a gas station. This gas station looks like it hasn’t been around for that long. Possibly a few years, but not much more.

After the turn the road goes through the center of town. First few blocks are old stores and shops built of brick and stone. The buildings that are encountered next are of a newer construction with designs that eschew the older design esthetic of the previous buildings. The diner then comes into view.

Welcome to my game. This is the game thread of [GURPS 4e] Wanted: Full time Security Personnel. Inquire within.

General rules for this game are as follows:

Post format:

Name

In game text.

Actions and rules stuff

Out of character posts can either be regular text without a name tag or in italics.

When skills, advantages, disadvantages are needed, please post them. When there’s combat, please post a combat stat block to make things easier. I’ll post an example of a combat stat block later in the thread before combat starts.

I need people to be fairly consistent posters. After I post, I expect people to respond within a day or two. I'd rather not have to repeatedly prompt people to post. If something comes up, just let me know and I'll work around it. If the game isn't working out for you or if there's some reason you want to drop, please let me know. If its a non-game related problem, I can work around it or at the very least make sure it doesn't impact the other players too much. If the problem involves the game itself, then I'll do what I can to resolve the problem.

On the other hand, if people are not posting because they forget or ‘don’t have anything to post,’ then you’ll be warned. After that point something bad could happen to the errant player’s character.

Everyone in the game should include their character sheets in their first game post.

Ille qui meritus est praemium habeat

Go ahead, go into the diner and have a seat. Don't worry, you can seat yourself. The place is empty except for people who work there. Take a seat anywhere, the waitress will be by in a moment.

Jacob Barnes

The man called Jacob Barnes breezes through the diner door, happy to stretch his legs after the drive and eager to see what passes for tea in Maars. Seeing no one else inside but the staff, he assumes he must be early. Five p.m. He's sure that was the time given, but he has a nasty habit of arriving too early or too late. Checking his phone, he's happy to see that he's in fact only a little bit early this time. Must be the first one here.

Thankfully the diner was easy to find. But he imagines everything must be quite easy to find in such a quiet, little forested settlement. It strikes him as the type of place where everyone knows the name of everyone else in town, not all too dissimilar for the place he grew up in.

Shrugging off his jacket, he steps to the counter and lays it over a stool before sitting on the one next to it. The menu gets a cursory glance before he confirms that he's not all that hungry for the food that's being served. Besides, he already knew what he wanted before he made it into town.

"Tea please." He says to the nearest waitress, his British accent sounding out clearly in the empty diner. Sensing no immediate rush from the staff, he turns on his stool to regard the door and checks the time once more to be sure. Almost Five p.m.

I'm sorry,
I can't hear you over the sound of how HIP I am.

Steve Fishman

Steve pulled his Thunderbird into the sparse diner parking lot. Looking at the dingy diner before him he began to feel the thoughts stirring in his head, 'Why am I here? Surely there's nothing interesting here, beyond a few missing puzzle pieces and perhaps some small town gossip.' He chuckled to himself, and replied with, 'Well maybe it will be a nice vacation?' He let out a soft grunt, these leads never lead to a vacation.

He pulled the keys from the ignition and removed himself from the car. Taking a stretch he looked around the part of town he was in. It was a habit for him, to check his surroundings wherever he was. Looking for odd details, things out of place. After all, the life of a PI can be a dangerous one. One never knows when danger will strike, or an odd lead will reveal itself. After a brief survey of the environs, he enters the diner.

The place seemed pretty average as far a small town dives go, in a way, he felt at home here. There wasn't many people around, save one person making an order with a waitress. He grabbed a stool at the counter and claimed one of the ashtrays. Withdrawing a cigarette he lit it up and waited for the waitress to notice him. There was no rush, he wasn't too hungry. Peanuts were his roadside companion, he spent enough time on the road to know better then to let it contribute to an appetite.

Might as well do something while doing nothing:
Checking out the surroundings and diner for anything that seems out of place or unusual.

Kurt Williamson/Simon Marino

Simon Marino stepped out of his Ford Taurus onto the diner parking lot and looked around. "How quaint.", Simon thought. Still, he reasoned, if Basorus is up to something sketchy, this is certainly the place to do it. With the amount of money and influence they have, the whole import/export thing has to be a cover for money laundering or perhaps some kind of smug--Simon abandoned this line of thought. Plenty of time to go over things later.

Simon reminded himself, "Alright, my name is Kurt Williamson and I am applying for a security job.", and stepped into the diner. He sat down in a booth and waited for a waitress. Some coffee would be great right now.

Dr. Marion Tipplepot, PH.D.

"Okay, think of this rationally." She said to herself in the car, across the street from the diner. Sitting in the car for the last twenty minutes, she realized that she had parked in her old parking space. Or rather, the one that never existed. In the world of the coma this had been their apartments, and Marion had not been thinking when she pulled in, it was like she had been gone away for a long time, but she was back home. Now they weren't apartments, but the parking space was there and that had been enough for her muscle memory.

"Just think of this rationally, just muscle memory is all, shake it off, Marion." She shook her head and then looked over the information she had managed to dig up before she had come. It was a rather large importer/exporter. Had a ton of offices over the place and smaller facilities like the one in Maars, Michigan. Marion took a logical leap and figured that these items were either very valuable or rather very illegal.

It would explain the need for armed guards and the the possibilities that David had not been subject to a mental breakdown. The signs were all there, a small insular community that depends on a single company for employment, much more likely to cover up, or at least be loyal to it. Whatever was happening here, Marion was sure it would take a lot of time for the townsfolk to warm up to her, if at all. That was going to be a problem, but not insurmountable.

The important part would be whether they would recognize David, if he had a mental break and caused a industrial accident that they were covering, it would be hard to track down officially. Wherever, David was it wasn't in a hospital, nor psych ward. She had already checked those months before, and anything that came in here, would have to be airlifted out most likely. Marion shook her head looking at her Laptop, all of the signs pointed here to this position and this job. Whatever had happened to David resided here.

Encrypting the data, she shutdown her laptop and glanced at her watch, and got out of the car, taking a few minutes with her compact to undo the damage of hours of driving. It wasn't until she seemed rather perfect in Marion's eyes that she started walking over toward the diner. Wearing a black blouse with a grey vest a slash of dull purple in her pocket was accented by a grey patterned skirt and purple heels, Marion felt ready to take on her rather harrowing task.

The heels clicking along the pavement crossing the street toward the diner sounded almost unnaturally loud in the deserted Maars atmosphere. Finally, getting to the door and opening it unceremoniously loudly as she strolled up to the counter. Managing to the get the last of the Kurt's declaration, she smiled at him and the crowd that had formed in the diner. "I assume we all are here for the job, aren't we?" She added to his comment.

"Why don't we all sit together, then?" Marion said with a friendly smile, giving the waitress's nametag a cursory look, "Kelly, I think I will have some green tea. Thank you so much." She added with a winning smile before turning to the others. Her critical eye looked between them hidden by her cheery smile and disposition. "My name is Marion." She said casting aside at least for now her honorific.

Hail SS-18 Satan, May His Passing Cleanse The Earth

Jack Plissken

Jack sits in his black 1970 Ford Torino(the condition of which was a personal point of pride), across the street from the diner. He'd have gone in already and ordered a coffee, but his last job was a good while ago. Jack was more than a little reluctant to dip into his last few hundred, just in case this new job didn't pan out.

It's not always easy to find work as freelance security, let alone if you've got one eye, drink like a fish, and swear like a sailor. Sure, the military swagger might make up for it sometimes, or a good word from a previous employer might help. But more often than not, it's a matter of living from hand to mouth.

"loving hope this loving job is as steady as Dean made it out to be. Goddamned asshat could of pointed this poo poo out sooner. gently caress it."

5 PM on the dot. Jack heads into the diner. A blonde, some jackass smoking, two more people sitting around. He catches the tail end of the blondes' words and nods. Obviously Jack wasn't the only new employee. Begs the question of what happened to the last security crew.

"I'm here for the job too. Fuckin' armed security, right? The hell the need a whole new damned crew for? New building or somethin'?" Jack holds his gloved hand out to the blonde, Marion. "Jack Plissken."

Doc, I forgot to edit in a 1 point quirk and a concealed carry license like we talked about on IRC. Is it okay if I do that now, or no?

edit: thanks doc, edited in

Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis

Maars Town Diner

The waitress writes down the Brit's order and then takes the woman's order.

"You all must be here for the Basorus person. I'm sure she will be along. I'll take the rest of your drink orders now."

Only when she addresses the group is her name badge visible, and it says Kelly. She stands just a hair over five feet. Her fine nearly white blonde hair is pulled back into a pony tail. She wears a basic uniform of a white buttoned down shirt and black pants. She doesn't seem too interested in the conversation.

Razage, I wasn't expecting to start rolling for stuff tonight, but I'll post something for you tomorrow. For the most part there's nothing out of the ordinary here. Except maybe your new coworkers.

Marion

"Thanks again." Marion says with a genuine smile at Kelly, and let her go on her way. To Jack the smile goes a little plastic, but she takes his hand and gives it a shake. "Charmed, I think we all are rather curious about that. I doubt they would tell us though, you know how companies are." She says rather diplomatically at the moment, taking it in slowly. Marion was not easily shocked, but Jack seemed to be rather devil may care about the situation.

Leaning back in her seat, she let out a sigh and then thought for a moment. "I don't suppose there is going to much to do around town on our time off." Marion finally said after a pregnant pause. "There doesn't seem to be a lot here at all."

I'm sorry,
I can't hear you over the sound of how HIP I am.

Steve Fishman

He sizes up the women as she enters, not exactly the type he'd expect to be working a private security gig. Then again, neither was he. As he thinks about this, he sees another man enter and thinks that's exactly the kind of person he'd expect to see working this kind of job. It seems there are going to be some surprises though. Steve would be perfectly content to just smoke the time away while waiting for the rep to show up, but he is going to be working with these people, and maybe they would have some insight.

"Yeah, I'm here for the job. Aside from us and the staff, I think we're the only people that are working in this town." He grunts, and gets off the stool. Walking up to the group he offers his hand to shake.

Sorry Doc, didn't realize. I just thought I'd practice doing things now, haha.

YUKIMURAAAA!

Cheryl Grayson

Cheryl Grayson stared out the window of the Greyhound at the endless procession of trees. She no longer had any idea where she was, but she liked this sight better than what she'd seen at the start of her trip. When the bus had stopped in Tacoma for breakfast yesterday morning she had been too afraid to leave the bus station for fear that she'd get lost in such a huge place. She was too nervous to eat anyway. She spent the entire time through Spokane praying the bus wouldn't stop there too. It was little comfort, considering the only response was the mocking whispers that had invaded her mind.

At least the bus didn't stop.

When they got to Billings her hunger finally overcame her nerves and set out into the big city in search of her first meal away from home. She ended up with something from a big chain that claimed to be a cheeseburger. She could only force herself to finish half of it, but it quieted her stomach, at least. Only her stomach, of course.

It was a miracle that she got any sleep at all, really.

When she saw the sign for the turn-off to Maars, she clutched her little suitcase tight. In it was everything she had left in the world, she supposed. Just the clothes she could throw together as her father hastily made arrangements in the middle of the night, and a few photographs of friends and family. (Of those, only the ones it was safe for outsiders to see.) The company was supposed to provide everything she'd need, but she still felt like she was terribly unprepared.

Maars itself seemed nice enough, anyway. The sleepy storefronts and single main road reminded her of home. She wasn't yet sure if that would make it easier or harder to be away. As she exited the bus beside the little diner that was the only direction she had, she decided this would be the first test: of both herself, and this town.

The place looked close enough to Martha's back in Shady Glen; it was time to see how it stacked up. She pulled herself up straight and confidently strode through the doors, pulling her suitcase behind her. She didn't stop to look around at the other patrons; she had to get this done before the voice decided to interrupt her. She took a seat at the counter, and turned to the woman behind it without even pausing to think about the menu.

“I'll have one order of the chef's specialty, a double cheeseburger with extra fries, a chocolate shake, and a slice of whatever pie is your personal favorite.”

Fighting poverty...one bum at a time.

Kurt Williamson/Simon Marino

Simon gave a distracted, "Hey, I'm Kurt.", but did not move from his current booth. Simon couldn't believe he said his little reminder out loud. He silently cursed himself for not having his head on straight. Very unprofessional. At least it wasn't anything compromising or important. When the waitress came by, Simon asked for some coffee.

The foul mouthed one, Jack, had already given him something interesting to think about. Hiring this many guards implied that Basorus either needed more personnel to guard something new, or it lost a number of guards at once. Both options could lead to something promising; he would have to talk to Jack about this later.

Jacob

It doesn't take much waiting at all before he sees more cars pull up and more people entering the diner. A very diverse looking bunch of people enter and he finds himself wondering if some have even worked security in their life. But then again he's hardly done something like this before, so he's not quick to judge. He thanks the waitress Kelly when she brings over his tea before picking it and his jacket up and walking over to the others.

As he does, a new girl enters and orders the most of anyone yet. "Big appetite you have there. I'm Jacob, nice to meet you. If you're here for the security position as well, it seems these other arrivals are with us." With a smile and nod, he then leaves the girl and moves over to the others, sitting where the majority of them have sat.

"Jacob Barnes." The Brit says after sitting down and blowing on his tea. He waves away the smoke one of the men is billowing out and wonders if that's even legal in here. But the man did seem to find an ashtray, so perhaps it is. He leaves it for now. "Pleasure to meet you all. I must say, I overheard your remark and it's quite the curiosity as to why Basorus suddenly needs a whole new security team. A veritable mystery." He chuckles, but thinks little else of it for now. He's sure there must be some reasonable explanation. "Anyway, what bought you all here to the middle of nowhere?"

The woman who calls herself Marion talks and Jacob nods. "No, indeed. There appears to be little to do around here, from what I could see. Certainly won't help to keep my mind from home at all. See, I had to come here for the work, leaving my girls down in Grand Rapids while I get some money to keep us afloat. A sorry state of affairs. Here!" In a flash, his wallets out and he extracts a picture of his wife and two daughters, showing it off to Marion whether she likes it or not. "Aren't they the cutest?"

Lipstick Apathy

Dre Prince

After pulling into the graveled diner parking lot, Andre confirms he was in the right place on his phone's GPS and notices he'd let the battery run down (should have plugged it in). No time to charge it now, he slides it into his pocket. Doesn't really matter since he doesn't have anyone to call. It was pretty much a one road trip, trees on trees on trees, but he wasn't going to take any chances getting lost. This was the farthest he'd been from Detroit in a while and he was out of his element, but that was the price for being able to take a break from his old life for a while. He turns his car off, gets out, locks it, and heads into the diner.

He takes a seat at the diner's bar and when Kelly glances his way, he says, "Yeah, lemme get a grilled chicken plate, greek salad--no lettuce, and an iced coffee, little milk, lotta sugar." Once the iced coffee is delivered, he swivels on his bar stool and watches the room, waiting for his food, sipping on his iced coffee.

Marion

The crowd in the diner was picking up, Marion decided. As the others gave a their introductions, she reciprocated quickly with a smile and a nod, though those that did not did not escape her notice either.
The woman ordering food seemed to be doing so in a great hurry as if the idea and order would escape her in an instant, while the new arrival ordered more sugar than coffee as her dad use to say. They seemed interesting, and before Marion could try to pull them over to the ragged group Jacob approached them.

"They might have a few things to enjoy, like maybe I don't know a book club." She said with a bit of a ragged smile.

Jacob broke her poker face when he approached with the photos of the his wife and daughters. There was a pang of regret as she remember's David Sarah, but her face hides the inner wince from the man in front of her.

"Oh they are are adorable, what are their names and how old are they?" She asks examining the photograph intently, Jacob's accent had been pleasant for sure and she felt a little envy toward his own family, but only a little. "Grand Rapids isn't that bad, I have a friend down there that is doing pretty well, but I can understand how it is to be far apart from your family."

Jacob

With his tea cooled down somewhat, he takes a sip and decides it really isn't that bad at all. Far better than he had expected anyway. It wouldn't match the quality back home, but then again, nothing really does. Another new arrival enters and seems more interested in a coffee than making introductions. He can't blame him though, after having made a similarly long trip, the drink was the first thing on his mind too. After all, he bets they'll all know each other well enough after a few days.

The Englishman smiles at Marion's genuine interest in the picture of his family. The picture itself shows his wife in a summer dress, with his two daughters in similar outfits, all three have blonde hair and are smiling brightly. "My daughters are Emma and Lily, both coming up on four. Twins. My wife's name is Sarah, but she might kill me if I tell you her age too." He laughs like a dad does at bad jokes and takes another sip of tea. "We both served together and ended around the same time. Couldn't stand the thought of going to England without her, so I moved here instead and the girls came not long after. I haven't regretted a day, even with all the recent money troubles. But those will pass."

His gaze drifts outside of the diner, at the streets and buildings around them. "Well there must be something to do around here for fun. Perhaps a gym too. I suppose we shall have to investigate sometime. Although, I suspect most of our days will be spent catching up on sleep."

I can't hear you over the sound of how HIP I am.

Steve Fishmen

Steve sat down with the rest of the group, curious at what a strange lot they were. Definitely not the sort to take this kind of work. In Brinks there was a very definite 'type,' that took these kinds of jobs. Sure some fit the bill, but the rest of them definitely did not. He listened with interest to each of their stories, but kept his head low. No use in getting involved quite so much yet if it wasn't necessary.

Marion

"Oh 4?! That is a good age! They look absolutely priceless. I love the names too, though I'm partial to Lilly more." She says giving a little chuckle at his joke of his wife's age. They looked like a lovely family, and the picture was worn and well loved. "They look very much like their mother though, especially in those outfits." She says casually, "I can imagine that moving from England to the United States must have been a very large change."

"I've only been to Ireland myself, and I loved it. I did a stop over in London though, and went to a few events and the like there. This place seems so far removed from everything I have to admit." She adds looking out the window now instead of the people at the inside squinting her eyes as if she would see a tailor shop in the distance that wasn't there.

"I hope there is a gym, I really need to get a workout every day or I'm useless." Marion says a bit huffed and dazed, finally with a shake of her head she looks back at the others in the diner.

Calling out to the others that were still at the front, "Are you all coming for the security job? I think that we all are? Might as well get acquainted" Marion then proceeds to make introductions for herself and the others she knew to the newcomers ordering food.

Jacob

The Englishman smiles proudly at the photo before returning it to his wallet. "Thank you, Marion. I am just glad they sleep a bit more soundly these days, honestly. But being away isn't so tough when I remind myself that it's all for them. And moving to America wasn't so hard under the circumstances. Not to mention that there isn't much left in England for me to return to. Besides, I always wanted to experience life in the States."

The tea gets another sip. "If there's no gym, at least we have good scenery for a healthy jog. I must admit, it will be nice to get into a daily exercise routine. I spent these last years taking care of the girls at home and that did not leave much room for a strict exercise schedule."

As Marion then goes about talking to the others, he simply continues nursing his drink and watches the door to spot any more arrivals.

YUKIMURAAAA!

Cheryl

Jumps imperceptibly when addressed by the man who sounds like he's from a movie. When it dawns on her that all the other customers are here for the same job as her, she is a little amazed. She wonders for a moment if her father had set all this up, but quickly dismisses the idea. Just a coincidence that Basorus was hiring so many people at once. Probably made things easier to arrange.

She shakes off all these thoughts after a moment. She's going to be working with these people, best to get to know them. New town, new friends. “Twins right off the bat, huh? Somebody is aiming for big things,” she smiles as she moves over to the table. “Cheryl,” she says, extending her hand in the polite greeting for outsiders. Everyone here is an outsider, she can't let herself forget that.

“You must be big city folk, to look at all this beautiful forest and think there's nothing to do around town. And so many new neighbors to get to know. I'm sure we'll be plenty busy.”

Aaron Jameson

It hadn't been that long a trip, nor one where Aaron traveled heavy; the offer of paid and furnished housing saw to that. In any case he didn't have a car, so moving with much in the way of stuff wasn't in the cards. Anything that didn't need to go with him went into storage, and what remained were the bare essentials as best his raggedy road hog could manage. A short hop around the rim of Lake Michigan and up to the UP, where everyone sounded just enough like him that he could feel comfortable, without having to be close to the ghosts back home.

Job? Project? Working vacation with pay? What the hell was the difference, really? It felt right. Well, no, not right, exactly - not entirely right. But it where he felt like he needed to be. There are times in a man's life where the gut has to call the shots, even if it doesn't make much sense.

The chopper grumbles its way to a stop in the parking lot, and he takes a moment to get his bearings. He'd certainly seen plenty of small towns and assorted spots along the road over his days traipsing about the Midwest. Maars certainly felt like that kind of place to Aaron. Still, some habits didn't break. Off the bike, he checks himself - keys, wallet, phone, the works. Nothing felt out of place. That was good. He takes a quick moment to force his brownish hair back into a more presentable look, too.

He strides over to the door, pausing as he opens it, expecting a chime, like some holes-in-the-wall might have. Time for one quick glance around from the doorway; seemed empty for the dinner rush, but it was that kind of town, wasn't it?

"Excuse me," he says after a second and a step or two inside. "So sorry to bother. I'm supposed to be meeting someone here. None of you happen to be here to tell me about a job, do you?"

"Twins were not exactly the plan, but I'm happy all the same." He smiles and shakes her hand. "Pleasure to meet you too, Cheryl. I would never really class myself as 'city folk', but I suppose that is not so true anymore. And I suppose you are right in that there will be quite a bit to keep us busy here and there. Small villages can often be surprisingly busy, indeed."

His view of the door alerts him to the new arrival before the door even opens to properly reveal them. "No trouble at all." he says as the new arrival speaks. "In fact, we all seem to be here for about a job. Security work too, yes? Now, why they seem to be hiring a whole new team is the real question on all our minds. Take a seat. I'm Jacob Barnes."

Holding his cig between his thumb and fore finger he nods at the new arrivals, "I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe they're starting a new division out here or something. I've done this kind of work before and usually it's better to start a whole new team on a new project then bring in various people from other places. Cohesion works much better when we all start from the same place." He explains in a gravelly voice. Afterwards he takes another long drag from his cigarette. For his part, a few things still didn't add up. However, for now he would wait and watch things unfold.

Marion

She laughs at the idea of starting something big with the twins, "Either she wanted to start something big, or wanted to have it done all in one go." A little snicker follows it, before turning to Cheryl, "Hello Cheryl, nice to meet you. I'm Marion and it is a pleasure, though, I wasn't born in a city, just been around the last few years for school." She said a bit vague about her history, it wasn't the time to break out things when they were all just getting to know each other.

"Right now, I think we all are waiting for them to show up." Marion said to the newcomer letting Jacob have the first introduction before interjecting her own greeting. "I'm Marion, and I assume that they must hire them in groups at the very least. Maybe they have a high turn over rate." Her smile lessens a bit as she suspects strongly one reason why that might be. A reason named David.

Jack Plissken

Jack smiles a little at the waitress. Always be nice to the people who handle your food.

"I'll take a coffee miss. Black, three sugar."

He listens to the others talk. Kids? gently caress that. The Brit didn't seem to bad though. Hobbies and gyms though? That worked.

"Don't need a damned gym. Army taught me how to keep fit without any fancy equipment. Any of us need a workout, we can loving set something up on our days off or some poo poo. As for poo poo to do, long as there's a range and an auto parts shop, I'm loving happy."

To Jack, it seemed like the others were a bit diverse. Not much for security by the looks of them, certainly no other vets. Wonder how many of 'em could even handle a gun? It was a fuckin' armed security job, the kinda thing where packing heat was more than a little advisable.

"So we're all here for the damned security work, huh? I've been doin' freelance security since I got outta the loving Army, but by the looks of it, the rest of you got different specialties."

Jacob

Another army vet is no surprise, but it's somewhat nice to hear all the same. Even if he does seem to make an effort of putting a 'gently caress' in every other sentence. "I was army too. Jack, was it? Nice to meet you. Don't get me wrong, I can workout just fine without a gym too, but I prefer the equipment if it's there."

When specialties are mentioned, he has to chuckle. "Well, if we need diapers changed, I'm your man. Aside from that, I've got plenty of experience around weaponry and good ol' patrolling. Security work can't be all that different. A lot less shooting though, I hope."

Aaron

He looks a bit surprised, eyebrow raising. "Everyone here for the same thing, huh? Well, isn't that just something. Huh," he intones in that distinctive, upper-Midwest sing-song tone. Aaron shrugs and takes a seat. "Thank you," he makes sure to say. "And good to meet you fine people. My name's Aaron."

This certainly changed things, and it certainly piqued his interest. "I have to admit, I am a bit surprised. I didn't think they were planning to hire so many people at once. But it sounds like I'm not the first one here to get to that little light-bulb." A pause. "Most places, you know, when they do something like that, either they just started up or opened a new building, or something happened and they had to let some people go. I hope it's not that, that'd be sad."

"Shooting? I hope not, I have an agreement with management that I am not carrying any firearm if I can help it." She said stubbornly, looking at everyone else, "I'd rather not carry a weapon is all, if I do, I intend for it to be non lethal." She says tapping her fingers on the table awkwardly. "Oh hi, Aaron, nice to meet you."

Folding her hands together she smiles at the others, "I don't think we will run into many problems this far out." She says a bit ominously.

"I'm a private eye, or I suppose rather, I was. I've done security work before as well." He pauses, "If we're replacing a team they let go, then those guys must have really hosed something up, heh." He doesn't draw the other conclusion out loud, but thinks it.

"So some of you folks seem to do this kind of thing regularly, some seem to be new. Why apply to this job in the middle of nowhere? Seems pretty far out of the way. For my part, it was a change of pace, and an interesting referral so I took it. I need to break from being an investigator and this seemed like just the thing."

"Sounds like a good as reason for anything, Dre. Sometimes you just got to get away." Marion said, and turned to Cheryl, but the woman's antsy and anxious demeanor told her to not press the issue. "I think that everyone really needs to escape once in a while, even if just for a time." She says thoughtfully.

"Escape once in a while? Best to not let my wife think that." He chuckles. Cheryl's silence might seem somewhat notable, but he doesn't think much of it. Everyone has their own reasons for being out here. "Anyway, I'm sure we can agree that a steady paycheck is a good reason for coming. For me, it's tough to find a job where the army and raising two kids are your only notable skills. Besides, it's not everyday you find a company offering free accommodation with the job. At least not where I'm from, that is."

Simon took a moment to clear his head. Christ, the whole business with Becca couldn't have come at a worse time. He did his best to push it out of his mind. Let's see, probably a good idea to make friends with the new 'coworkers.' Simon chimed in, "I'm, uh, personally doing this job because it pays better than my last one. Less chance of getting shot too, I figured!"

"Oh, yah, the paycheck here is pretty nice, especially if you account for not having to pay rent," Aaron agrees, speaking almost to fill the space as he took quick glances to size up the group around him. A vaguely eclectic mix, it seemed. "And it's steady, or should be - no having to hunt around for clients or any of that kind of thing." He smiles. "And I only grew up one state over. Though I would guess you all can hear that, you betcha."

"Maybe, Jacob, you aren't the one that is escaping." She said with a twinkle in her eye. She digs into her purse for a moment and checks her phone and sees a message from Sarah, but quickly stows it away. Now was important as were meeting all these new people, Marion had decided that she wouldn't lie about anything, but at least not offer her profession. People tended to get a bit antsy around "shrinks" and she was sure that most don't differentiate or care what the difference is between a research psychologist and a "talking cure" psychologist was.

"I would hope that no one needs to shoot anything at all. It sounds like beyond a bit of hunting this is as quiet a town as you can get. I am sure though that they will make us earn our pay as much as they can." Marion said with a bit of a sigh at the thought of shooting and guns.

"Oh yes, I did hear that Aaron, I'm from the Midwest too, but my mother was very strict and proper. 'I will not have my child speak improperly,' and all that." Marion imitates a posh voice for a moment.

Kelly comes out with the food and more drinks for the group. As she serves the food, she says,

"Oh, you're new Basorus employees, eh? Seems they like to hire people in groups. At least in my experience that's what they do. Did they say what shift you'd be working by chance?"

Along with the other food Cheryl ordered she also got a hot large turnover that smells savory with a ramakin of gravy. Also Cheryl gets a slice of apple pie.

Marion said to Kelly, sipping at it with a bit of warm pleasure. She hadn't skimmed the menu really, but she kinda figured the greasy spoon wouldn't have the best salads and little to no chance of finding tofu. A few minutes later she was starting to get a bit hungry so she added on before Kelly left, "Kelly, might I have a chef salad without cheese, egg or ham, oil and vinegar on the side, and a fruit plate please?"

"This is, excuse me," he says to Kelly as she comes by. "A drat fine cup of tea. Could I trouble you for a refill? Thank you. And I believe we are to be working the night shift. In fact, I wonder if they intend for us to start tonight."

Dre, hunched over his food, makes a face when he hears Marion's order--a plate of lettuce and a fruit salad--but doesn't say anything, just takes another bite. His greek salad and chicken wasn't as good as his favorite greek diner in Detroit, but it wasn't a kitchen nightmare, either. After he finishes his mouthful, he speaks.

"That would be something." Dre said, "If I were hiring a group of people to guard my poo poo, I wouldn't put them straight to work after a long day of driving unless I had to."
