So how should we handle the leaked episodes? I'd think it would be best if we put a WARNING before spoiler text so people who have only watched what's kosher won't be punished for our lawlessness.

Ps. EPISODE 4 SPOILER:

I called it. Jinora astral projected her way to Brown kid because of her crush. The way they handled this is starting to pay off. That being said the carnival of evil will probably go down anticlimactically after it is revealed that they are henchmen cultists. My impossible to implement story idea could have turned things on their head by assigning these guys to guard duty for dark Jinora while leaving open a kill on sight directive when the two sides clashed. This (and aging up brown kid) would have killed the cute so I'll shut up now.

My next speculation is that Toph's clan will become the legitimate opposition inside the EK while khmer rouge peasants have to be stopped from massacring the poor defenceless secret police and their backwards loyalists.

Interesting theory, that would make a lot of sense. Something done out of necessity goes a little too far, leading to negative consequences.

The show is good again! All the not-shitposters can come out now and post about how much they love Book 3 of the Legend of Korra! Please, before this thread is cemented in a death spiral of loathing and cynicism and we're never allowed to post about Avatar again!

Highlights (some spoilers):

*Say goodbye to Republic City! President Douchebag kicks the Avatar out anyways, even after she saved it twice over the last two seasons

*A mysterious new group of super-benders who the crack team of Firelord Zuko, Korra's dad, and Korra's creepy cousins are trying to keep from springing Sparky Sparky Boom Combustion Lady

*Airbenders are popping up around the world! This has lead to exploring the idea that airbenders who are grown-rear end adults or still have families might not want to drop everything to recreate a culture that was dead for a hundred years, and then has spent the past seventy being kept alive by one family and a fanclub

*The Dantean socioeconomic hell that is Ba Sing Se is back, replete with the evil Dai Li and Queen Margaret Thatcher/Kim Jong Un

*The story of Bolin and Mako is made even more tragic by the fact that their dad made the exodus to Republic City, knowing he could never return to Ba Sing Se, just so he could raise a family with a better future than any they could have lived in the slums of the Lower Ring--and his orphaned children ended up living that life anyways

I'm very pleased with this opening. The characters are all on point, recognizable and strong without tedious angst or weird obsessions. Korra in particular is motivated not by an identity crisis but by a proactive goal, which is refreshing; unlike Book 2's opening, the growth from the previous book seems to have stuck. The apparent antagonists are a physical rather than a psychological or political threat, and unique martial artists rather than mooks or spirits, which shows good promise for the quality of the fight scenes we're in for. And most importantly, the characters are mobile instead of being stuck in Republic City - so it can show different environments and different character dynamics, draw on the lore of the setting, and be less constrained in how things proceed (i.e. every episode won't open with people discussing the fallout of the previous episode in city hall).

Book 3 already is off to a different start than Book 2, which was in many ways a rehash that felt like it was Frankensteined together from rejected first drafts of Book 1's events. And it appears to have shed the qualities that prevented book 1 from reaching the heights of The Last Airbender - it's shaping up to be an adventure again, instead of the thriller the last two books were.

Will it actually deliver on exploring the world it's depicting? Well, once burned, twice shy. But between the strong family themes and the echoes of the best parts of The Last Airbender, I'm already certain I'll be getting something out of watching it.

There's not really any point in it. A few weeks from now everyone will be talking about how lovely it is. v:shobon:v I mean look at the first few pages of this thread. Most of the remaining posters are people who hate the show and just want to post about how much they hate it, so why not let them?

It's perfectly fine for kids. A lot of people underestimate how much kids can take but there are a ton of kid's shows which get pretty dark or scary or even have lasting consequences.

Well it's also that Ba Sing Se is based strongly off of the late Chinese Qing dynasty, one of two dynasties in which a foreign host (the Manchurians) seized control of the Empire from the native Han population. Because of this, several brutal reforms were put into place to quell rebellion, the most notable of which was the Queue Order, which forced all men in the empire to adopt the Manchurian-style Queue, where the hair is shaved at the front of the head, and worn as a long braid in the back:

The penalty of not doing so was death. It was a sign that the Han were forced to submit themselves to the Manchurian rulers.

The latter days of the Empire was overseen by several despotic or incompetent rulers, such as the young boy-emperor Puyi (who also appeared to be the basis for the previous Earth King, from the original ATLA series):

Or the Dowager Empress Cixi, who is popularly regarded as a despot. She may also have been the inspiration for the Earth Queen:

The full history of any dynasty is complex of course, but some of the common threads that runs through the Qing are oppression, stagnation, and resistance to change. So this may also have been a big influence in how Mike & Bryan conceived Ba Sing Se. Though yeah North Korea is also a very apt comparison.

Episodios en espaņol: quinta edicion

Super spoilers:

1. Mixed family tension is fun

2. I may have mistranslated, but I think Toph cheated and got caught pregnant by her husband.

3. I called it again. Metal clan desires revolution, and oh hey, they've got the bourgeois industrialist par excellance Varick helping them with his expertise and magnets.(which hypothetically should automate the train systems)

4. Another romantic subplot that was well executed

5. Bolin learned to be himself.

6. More epic Benderhood (the brotherhood of evil benders) smackdowns. This week: the shotgun staff.

7. Toph is alive?

EPISODE 6 MEGASPOILERS!

1. BACKSTORY!

2. Everybody gets to be a low level metalbender

3.Police corruption! (I didn't understand if Toph resigned directly after that or if she got forced out on a later date.

4. The metal clan is about to be Piccaloed and I'm pretty sure Varick is going to sell the krew out.

naaaah he's going to be fun to watch. Gotta say that so far I am impressed with how quickly they turned Bolin's character around. He still has bits of the "I'm a celebrity now" that he picked up throughout Season 2 but thankfully he lost the arrogance it brought him, guess that's what happens when your boss tries to assassinate the president. It's also nice to see him just being his normal goofball self and not trying to impress anyone or try to hit on every girl he sees. Not that I didn't enjoy him acting that way in Season 1 but there he seemed only interested in Korra and once that didn't work out he just became the animal guy, which was fine and seems to have returned here :3:

Gonna echo the sentiments of Korra and Asami's new relationship, it's nice to see the two girls reconcile over Mako and just grow up. That and their tormenting of him is pretty entertaining as well. Although there is one thing I'm kind of confused about, didn't Asami lose most of Future Industries last season? Or does she now own that and Varrick's company due to him being arrested? It's not a huge nitpick but I just couldn't remember if that had been resolved at the end of last season or if they're just ignoring it and moving along.
