Payday 2 is about murdering law enforcement officers in one of the best co-op shooters on the market today. Also about unhealthy amounts of gun love.

Yes, pubbies in this game are terrible you should play with goons. Join us on the Camping the Stairs mumble and by joining the Payday 2 Goons Steam group. Feel free to complain about your pub adventures in the thread though!

Hanging out in the steam group chat and joining the mumble server and idling in the Payday 2 Looking for game channel is the best way to organize a goon group. Some people are pretty jaded on playing this game after two years but whenever DLC gets released or sales happen, there will be an influx of new players that you can catch a ride with.

Whatís new with Payday 2?

This game is pretty unrecognizable from what it was released as two years ago. If you haven't played in awhile you should just jump in because there aren't really any changelogs that will explain it to you. But who cares about that, lets see some pixel gunporn

Game Mechanics and FAQ

M.O.? Is that they're good... Once it escalated into a murder one beef for all of 'em after they killed the first two guards, they didn't hesitate. Teabag guard number three because... what difference does it make?
From Captain Swing

if you really care about gettin gud you should read SA poster John Murdochís Payday 2 guide for beginners if you haven't. Many of the mechanics of this game are not explained very well or blatantly misleading, such as many many skill descriptions, but thankfully many brave goons have thrown themselves into the depths of to bring the facts to us.

What is the Long Guide people keep talking about?

It's a ~30,000 word document detailing exactly how the game mechanics work from people who delve into the code. Many goons have long sections committed to memory and quote it as if it was a holy document. Seriously. If you find yourself looking at it, you might want to seek therapy.

----------------------------------------

Iím new, what skills/class/perks should I get first?!?

First of all, after a few heists look at the "Perk Deck" tab in the skills menu. Equip the Armorer or Crew Chief deck and stick with that until you have it maxxed out. By the time you have finished one of those two, you will probably know enough about the game mechanics to figure out what to do next, but either of those are a solid first pick. Make sure you stick with one because there are EXP bonuses in the perk decks now.

Plan Z posted:

Guide to using the Grindr Perk Deck

Chapter 1: Use Grinder. Stop whining about wearing lighter armor or sacrificing dodge or whatever. Healing yourself by setting cops on fire is the best thing to happen on a screen.

End of guide.

Comments? Corrections? Make sure to PM them.

For skills:
    Mastermind
  • Aced Cable Guy (Faster tying of hostages, raises number of cable ties to 6. Great for hostage-heavy maps.)
  • Basic Endurance (Doubles your sprint stamina.)

    Enforcer
  • Aced Transporter (Arguably the most important skill in the game. Lets you move faster while carrying bags and lets you throw them farther.)

    Technician
  • Basic Nerves of Steel (Halves damage while interacting with things; this includes anything that causes the interaction circle to show up on your screen, including reviving teammates and placing deployables.)

    Ghost
  • Aced Sprinter (Reduces the time before sprint stamina regenerates, makes it regenerate faster, makes you sprint faster, period, and adds a 25% dodge bonus while sprinting. Phew!)
  • Aced Fast Hands (Personally, I think this skill is a luxury buy, but it is almost universally useful much like Aced Transporter. It lets you pack baggable loot faster and pick up bags faster.)

Skill Trees/Classes/Builds
Here is a useful skill builder

Just post your builds in the thread and try things out. I suggest putting some points in enforcer.

Are there any cool mods/tweaks for the game?

Many cool mods can be found here: http://paydaymods.com/

GoonMod- A mod being developed by SA user Wilko! Removes corpse despawn limits, so you can see exactly how many cops you killed during the heist in grotesque little piles. Obviously affects performance. Excellent mod, A++.
Seriously look at this poo poo

It also does a lot of other things like:
Gage Coins- a massive fix to the terrible drop system
Crime.net Cargo- trade weapons and masks among other players with GoonMod
Rainbow lasers and flashlights- what it says on the box
Push to interact- press F once instead of holding it to lockpick, no more fat fingering pager answers!
Hilarious mutators like All Cops go to Heaven
And probably a bunch more things I'm forgetting!

Insert name here posted:

So I made a mod:

Features the following on Overkill difficulty:
  • GenSec Elites and Skulldozers
  • DW spawn tables* and assault waves
  • Elites have their DW health (but use OVK damage values)
Everyone in the group must have the mod installed because otherwise anyone who doesn't have it installed will see (and be able to kill) the Greys at 130hp instead of 240hp. Also all Murkywater enemies will also have their DW health because they are literally just reskins of the greys. If you want the changes to assault waves and spawn tables, but are playing with someone who doesn't want to install mods, use the No Grey Changes version for consistency between host and client. Note that with the No Grey Changes version only the host needs the mod.

TO INSTALL: throw it into your BLT mod folder, cause it's a BLT mod

Download: http://www.mediafire.com/download/8...GenSec_v1.1.zip
No Grey Changes: http://www.mediafire.com/download/e...enSec_v1.1g.zip

Make sure to report any hilarious and stupid bugs that cause the game to poo poo itself so that I can maybe hopefully fix them.

*The only change to the spawn tables I've made is adding Green Dozers. By default on DW only Saiga and Skulldozers will spawn. This mod will make it so all three varieties will spawn on OVK. DW should not be affected.

Ham Wrangler

  • Armored Transport- Adds the armored transport series of heists where the crew knocks over some armored cars in various exotic locales. There is also a secret document that leads to another heist where you rob an armored train of some top secret weaponry. Also includes some weapons and presidential masks. Probably the worst DLC since the missions arenít great and if you want to play them you can ask someone to host one. Only buy at a sale price.

  • Gage Weapon Pack #01- Adds 3 new weapons and grenades and some animal masks. A pretty good DLC, definitely worth it at sale price. You can also play with grenades if someone with this DLC buys a grenade asset before the heist. However, this DLC is super important so you can participate in the time honored tradition of throwing all your grenades at each other while waiting for the heist to end.

  • Gage Weapon Pack #02- Adds LMGs and combat knives and some masks. A fantastic DLC, the LMGs are among the best weapons in the game and are very fun to use. Knives are meh. Definitely worth it at regular price, must buy on sale.

  • Gage Mod Courier- Adds packages littered hidden around Washington DC that you can pick up during your heists. When you have picked up enough of the packages you earn 5 mods that fit on a variety of weapons. This is the best DLC out right now and you should buy this immediately so your weapons donít suck. Seriously, this fixes the mod drop system that is really frustrating and gives you some amazing mods easily so you donít have to care about the drop system being broken and frustrating. If you donít have the DLC, any packages picked up during the mission will give you an EXP bonus.

  • Gage Sniper Pack- Adds 3 Sniper rifles and some bug masks to the game. Also added vantage points and ziplines to many of the heists. The sniper rifles are a lot of fun to use and are able to shoot through walls and Shields and also make short work of Bulldozers. A very good DLC, definitely worth it at sale price. Worth it at regular price if you have a tremendous hard on for .50 cals.

  • The Big Bank- Adds a new heist, a gun, and some excellent masks to the game. A heist where all your dreams of heisting while riding the pink pig come true, it is a massive map with lots of objectives and a fun gimmick called preplanning. The contact for this new heist, The Dentist (basically Gus Fring from Breaking Bad, same actor), loves planning ahead and for the Big Bank you have access to the blueprints of the map that you can draw on in the lobby to plan out your perfect heist.

Obviously the best DLC and you should purchase it immediately. Of course you can play the heist before you buy it as long as the host has the DLC. Definitely worth buying on sale.

  • Gage Shotgun Pack- Adds 3 shotguns to the game, 2 primaries and a secondary. Also adds some amazing melee weapons and masks and new shotgun ammo for all shotguns. If you don't own the DLC you get access to 000 Buck for free. Explosives easily stunlock Bulldozers, Flechettes give you some accuracy and range for a loco secondary, slugs and 000 buck are bad. I'd pick it up on a sale though.

  • Gage Assault Pack- Adds 3 new assault rifles to the game and a Grenade Launcher! Also adds 4 new melee weapons and 4 new masks based on supervillians. The assault rifles are all fairly strong, Grenade launcher is gimmicky but is another solid shield-killer, the melee weapons are pretty cool. Not mindblowing, but pretty solid DLC, wait for a sale. Also the DLC teaser page straight up rips off Battlefield's style, oh Overkill. Achievement guide from Drewjitsu

  • Hotline Miami DLC- Hotline Miami themed DLC where you assault a Russian Mob owned motel to: Kill all the Russian Mobsters, Set all their cars on fire, Blow up a Gas Station, Break into their underground vault, cook Meth all while doing the above. And that's just Day 1 of the heist! Also includes some sweet animal masks and SMGs and bonus content if you own Hotline Miami. If you don't know someone who has this who can host for you, I'd buy this at regular price. Achievement guide from Drewjitsu Also Check out this rad poster

  • Gage Historical Pack- Adds some WW2 themed weapons: MG42 LMG, Mosin-Nagant sniper rifle, Sten Sterling SMG, and a C96 Broomstick pistol. Also some masks and melee weapons, including a bayonet for the Mosin!!! Fun guns, but wait for a sale. If you have a huge boner for WW2 guns you should pick it up though.

Free Updates
Multiple free guns, mods and masks are yours if you join the Official Payday 2 Steam group
Charlie Santa GO Bank update- a pretty bad heist that showed how good Overkill is at reusing assets
The Infamy Update- added a prestige system to the game for all your xp grinding needs. Get some sweet sunglasses!
The Death Wish Update- Added a new difficulty level, DEATHWISH for all your masochistic needs. Only play Deathwish if you hate yourself (2EZ represent ). This update also added a boost system for heists so you get more or less EXP depending on how often you have played that heist. Also a boost to your next heist when you finished a stealth mission was added. See second post for details.
The Election Day Heist- a fantastic heist that really showed that Overkill CAN make a decent stealth map that also has a great plan B
The Shadow Raid Heist- Stealth-only map where you rob some PMCís of the poo poo they stole from wherever they were deployed. Good fun for the stealth guys but brutal if you mess up because there is no Plan B.

The Big Fat Music Update!!- Overkill took one of the best parts about this game, the great soundtrack from Simon Viklund, and made it even better. You can now control exactly how and when all the music in the game plays for each heist. Also if you own the soundtrack to Payday: The Heist, you also get all of that music to use in-game also! And you can sync your soundtrack to the host if you don't own any music DLC. Aside from one small tease, this update was completely unexpected and totally awesome.

Crimefest- A bunch of free community dlcs that are locked behind stretch goals of how many people join the official Payday 2 group (Please join the official payday 2 group). Since it doesn't matter if you have the game or not, a botnet was immediately started up but Overkill doesn't care because they just want to look good to investors! Snarkiness aside, many cool things await us in Crimefest, including Old Hoxton Breakout heist and Old Hox playable character.

Only thing I'd say is you don't have to ace Die Hard, really, that 15% faster armor recharge is sort of not noticable to me.

The point in Martial arts should really be in Cat Burglar instead, it is a crazy useful skill.

Die hard is really not necessary for that build, I would say put the 4 points into Inside Man aced for loud utility (buying expert drivers to prevent escapes) or Ace Shinobi and put a point into Cleaner for stealth utility.

Here is a level 40 build that anyone should aim for, it has all the best low level skills that should be a part of most builds and at level 40 you probably have a good number of heists under your belt and have unlocked all the weapons: http://www.pd2skills.info/#/profile/level-40-build-2/

Die Hard Ace is for people who expect to be under fire a lot, but that build is actually going to be under fire quite a bit so I disagree that it's wasted points. Might be better elsewhere though. There's no shotgun skills so you're not going to be the big damage-soaking thicky of the team, most likely.

I do feel like Spotter over Inside Man is a really questionable choice though. Aced Combat Doctor isn't BAD, but I will also that that I very rarely see a successful team that has need of that much healing, even on Death Wish. The Martial Arts point should absolutely be in Cat Burglar though, Cat Burglar is just fantastic.

I also think Inspire builds tend to undervalue Combat Medic since the +30% health it gives works with Inspires and as an Inspirer you're going to be doing basically every revive ever.

I picked up this game in the sale and it's pretty fun. A little slow-paced and grindy, but that's okay. I've been going heavy into Ghost since I like the idea of being the stealth guy who does objectives and takes out cops with a few well-placed shots while they're preoccupied. Haven't had much luck getting people to play with, though, and while I haven't had many total shitheel pubbies most of them are no more competent than I am and that means heists rarely get done. Like a previous poster said, Go Bank is the only time I've ever thought 'drat I wish there was a faster picker here' since using the saw on that map is a 100% crapshoot to ALARM CITY and a trip through the sewers. Original Banks have 4 guards and you have all the time in the world to saw/C4 poo poo open, the armored truck missions can be sawed open with maybe 1 reload and I haven't played framing frame in a while but I'm pretty sure that's saw city also. If I bring a saw, usually someone has C4 (or will bring ammo so I can bring the C4) and whatever doofus with the lockpick skills can go gently caress himself.

you guys, I just figured out how to make the Sentry Gun actually kind of useful.
Remember in Payday: The Heist, where you use a sentry in the Mercy Hospital map, and it suppresses the civs?

Wait, what? It does this?

Hm, ok, I took out Die Hard, and replaced Martial Arts with Cat Burglar and Spotter with Inside Man aced. Leaves me 4 points that I'm probably gonna use for some of the stuff suggested by you, the dangerous and powerful outlaws. Looking at the trees, there's some other stuff that looks interesting to me: Aced cat burglar, with the super fall protection and halved custody time, seems pretty good to me. Also, SMG specialist, because I like using single shot primaries and SMGs are a nice offhand for that. Anyone have any thoughts on these?

SMG Specialist loving rules and is a bargain, for how good it makes an entire handful of weapons that are in both the primary and secondary slots I'm amazed it isn't a 4/8 skill. Cat Burglar Ace is pretty good, I wouldn't gush over it but having armor-only falls is situationally useful. The half custody time is worthless, as you should not be going into custody that often.

The biggest problem with them is they're too niche - there are very few missions where C4 or a saw aren't preferable.

This exactly. There are only a few missions where ECM Overdrive is useful, and lockpicking skills are only useful on the one map that has been explicitly designed to cater to it, and that map is so unrewarding that barely anyone ever plays it. If they were 1/3 skills I could see the argument for them, but as 4/8 skills they are mammothly overpriced. Truthfully for as relatively small a part as stealth plays in this game, I would really expect the 4/8 skills to be something as universally useful as 'civilians and guards must now fill up 2 detected bars to actually see you'. With an ace of 'now cameras have to do that too.'

As part of the scripted objectives for stealthing the map you set up fake sentry guns that stop the civilians from getting up. He's suggesting actual sentry guns do that in Payday 2, which admittedly would be pretty cool. Kind of encroaching on Mastermind but we get all the cool stuff already anyways so I'm cool with that.

No, I mean, when was the whole sentry thing added for Payday 1 for that map? I literally never saw anybody do that and I played that map a dozen or so times.

It was in the No Mercy DLC map that OKS did in cooperation with Valve. You actually heist Mercy Hospital, and it's heavily implied that the Payday crew was responsible for the Green Flu outbreak in Left 4 Dead. However, it only shows when you successfully stealth the place. At one point, Bain gives you dummy sentries to keep people down while you switch into scrubs.

There's a mistake in the OP. It's the Chimano Custom, not the Chimano 88 that's the best handgun.

Alright, with the remaining 4 points I grabbed SMG Specialist and Aced Shinobi. Cleaner, no, because I have friends who will probably spec further into Ghost. Die Hard, no, because SMGs seem pretty versatile and I don't like the idea of firing off sniper rifles or whatever while I'm bleeding out on the floor. And Combat Medic, no, because, well, it seems bad.

Cleaner Basic's good, Cleaner ace is a waste imo, Die Hard basic can be nice though. Firing off a Thanatos to punk a Bulldozer or Shield that's gloating over your corpse is fantastic. That said, not a huge thing, probably not a terrible loss if you ever get it. Combat Medic is definitely the weakest of all the bottom tier Mastermind skills and is fantastic if you have Aced Inspire. Just...not before that.
