Stardust is exactly what I hoped for after Danny dropped the Accelerator single after AE, he apparently doesn’t like being known for being able to rap over any beat because he doesn’t wanna be some one trick pony but I think he underestimates both how rare and how sonically impressive his abilities are in that regard. I love what he raps about but the way he sounds is sui generis even before you throw him on top of some insane glitchy hyperpop.

Interview: Danny Brown, Back for the First Time

quote:

You also label the big three in rap as you, Kendrick, and Earl Sweatshirt on that song. Those are big claims.

I’ve been saying that forever, though. That’s always been my top three. As a rapper, you’re supposed to feel like you’re the best and nobody can gently caress with you, and they’re the only two niggas I feel can gently caress with me. Them and Billy Woods and Freddie Gibbs. Anybody else, I’ll give the business, I’m sorry. I’m just sayin’ I can’t gently caress with Dot and I can’t gently caress with Thebe. [laughs]

Personally I really dig the production on this album but I'm not feeling Danny's rapping over it, with some exceptions (like the beat switch on "The End" and "Lift You Up" and even that Azealia Banks did better)
Never really clicked with Old either.
But I'm glad he's doing stuff like this and perhaps with a few more listens I'll get into it.

Stardust is a unique album and good listen but I absolutely hate these spoken word interludes. I always skipped the end of "Starburst" and I was really disappointed this trite idiot narrator pops up across the album. It just kills the momentum every time it comes up.

I’m not all the way through it but I’m loving new Danny so far. (Hyper)pop is not a genre I listen to but this production is great. Couple weak features is my only criticism. AE never clicked with me but this really is.

It's clumsy phrasing, I think the phrase he used was "gimmick"; struggling to find a more elegant way to put it but obviously he doesn't want his abilities there to overshadow the thrust of his lyrics

Danny's list would be basically identical to mine with the addition of Vince and Pusha, figures I dig his music as much as I do since we have the same taste

I've listened to stardust a bunch of times and it's probably my aoty. BUt goddamn these spoken word parts are the worst addition to a rap album since those fake 2pac interviews on tpab. Frank ocean on what you see would've been great. Also this is embarrassing but green light is my favorite song. I have a soft spot for those 'riding windows down on backroads with your girl songs'. You know the ones:

So I like Dr Octagon, Deltron 3030, that one sex album by Lovage… basically whatever Dan the Automator has been part of. But a lot of the other stuff in this space kinda sucks? What’s good, where do I start expanding?
