Always remember reading Wikipedia back in the day and learning DMX had like... five or six #1 albums in a row which was a record that beat out the Beatles or some other institution. Sitting on the schoolbus, hour-long ride, local radio station playing Party Up or X Gonna Give It To Ya was such a treat compared to the low energy stuff. The ad-libs that live on in our culture with the barking. SWIZZ BEATZ. DMX gave the world a lot. I hope he has some peace.

DMX has long been on my list of GOATs when someone and I are arguing top 3. He lived a terrible life punctuated by the joy of creativity and the peace of there being something greater than this. Some people overcome greater odds, and some people fall to far fewer pressures than X had pressing on him. He deserved better than he got, which is having undeniable influence on the music that came after him. I wish he'd lived longer and found peace prior to death. The rawest part of his deal is that in the climate of modern rap, I could easily have pictured him being months away from the kind of successful comeback that too few artists and deserving human beings get to see, and a financial bump could have been good for him, but now I get to watch his posthumous catalog fill the pockets of some Martin Skreli rear end in a top hat while the next DMX gets lynched by an overdue pig. RIP to Earl Simmons under every alias he had, praying with and for his family and for others, and I'll be in the mood to listen to all kinds of his music, the loud and the... differently loud, in a few days.

As someone who was a huge metalhead then (still am TBH) - DMX was loving awesome. His rasp was so loving good. Just brutal. His poo poo hit hard and I loved those first two albums. Been blasting them all day and gently caress ... 20 years later they still slam. Rest in power. 🤘🏻
