Yeah he was very publicly going through withdrawals at some point around then too. But he didn't get "too hosed up on drugs" in the sense that he made it out of that and is finding more of an audience every year.

Exactly. He doesn't have wet brain like Webbie or whatever.

I vaguely remember the tweets as he was going through it. I was usually super hungover when I was reading them. Reading his interviews about that process was OOF. But good for him on making that change. Helped motivate me in my journey. Him and Gucci.

Honestly Bazooka Tooth is only meh to me, I think Blockhead didn't handle a decent amount of the production on it (none shall pass I'd say is his best album tho). And I think one of the things him moving to being less abstracted has done is really emphasized how good a storytellher he is. He's always been that way, but it comes out a bit easier now (really only dude I'd put on his level consistently is Ghostface).

for real. listening to him talk about a livestream of a pair of eagles eating someone's cat 'like a loving churro' shouldn't be interesting. long legged larry should not be interesting. but the journey always kicks rear end.

I just came across No Regrets while trying to dig through his early stuff for good stories. I remember that one really throwing me off back in the day because of how raw it is in contrast to most of the rest of the album.
There used to be this video on youtube of somebody doing a storyboard music video of it and it was really good.

I listened to a lot of Sage Francis, Personal Journals hit me pretty hard at the time. I went back and re-listened to some of his stuff recently, and while he's a good writer, he conveys incel levels of insecurity imo and the 'ironic' misogyny isn't funny to me anymore. The two themes do not paint a nice picture.

Yeah, la haine is great, I watched it 25 years ago. Apparently that Les Miserables movie from a couple years ago is comparable, haven't watched it yet.

Grimey Drawer
Les Miserables 2019 is pretty good but too obviously a La Haine homage (and also Training Day, it’s basically those two mixed in a blender with some Do the Right Thing) and it tries to both sides it too much

The punk aesthetic is so weird in contrast with the actual music.

I love punk music and hip-hop but this doesn't really do anything for me. But it's alright
