In hip-hop news that actually matters, Spitta streamed Pilot Talk III last night and it's not too hard to find now. He's got a Riff Raff verse on a Harry Fraud beat. Unsurprisingly awesome album.

I have a hard time loving it because it's basically the same project he's released for the past 3 years, but that makes me love it also. There's basically no difference listening to his music on shuffle or in order and this will fit in with the former.

If you search for Wale on wikipedia, the default article is only 3 sentences long about a plank of wood called a wale, because that's still more interesting than the rapper

I get the feeling that Wale's first album tanking hurt him really badly, and everything he's done since then has been a really cynical attempt to capture an audience again. Even his new album has this feeling of "hey everyone liked my Seinfeld mixtape, I'll just make a sequel and I'll be popular again". I'm sure he'll be chasing some other trend after his generic MMG album failed, his soul album failed, and his "comeback" album inevitably fails

I don't really like Wale or his music but he's far from a failure as a rapper. He's got a pretty big audience, lot of female fans, which helps him sell a lot of albums(for a rapper in his lane). He's pretty much plateaued as far as his commercial potential/success goes. He dumbed downed for his audience and doubled (probably 10x-ed) his dollars and it worked. Projecting to do 80,000 first week is pretty massive.

When I mean "failed", I mean in terms of being respected as a rapper. No one really takes Wale seriously and he's super insecure about it.

Wale should have stayed clear of MMG, that relationship is going to bite him on the rear end so hard in the end. He doesn't fit in at all there.

The only Project Pat song I've ever heard is "Great Googly Moogly" or whatever it's called and it's one of the most unintentionally funny songs I've ever heard. Same with Lil Boosie and "Smokin' on Purple," but everyone seems to think he's great too.

I've actually been surprised how lukewarm most dudes here seem on Boosie, esp since every throwaway album Gucci's followers piece together gets praised. I guess Boosie started talking too much sense after being released and can't be appreciated "ironically" anymore which would eliminate 95% of the Gucci fans around here.

Also listening to the billy woods album more, and it's really been growing on me. I do think his style can be a bit off-putting at times (one of the reason I liked him over blockhead's production since that smoothed a lot of the bluntness) but it's still really good and dude's on point with what he's saying.

As some dudes mentioned I really think the failure of his first album messed with him. He followed that up with a mixtape (pre-MMG) where he basically cried about how bad his album did, and so when MMG came he got the full makeover and picked up some hits so I guess it worked out for him (and his MMG album didn't fail at all, he had some weeks at #1 I seem to remember which for a rap dude of his stature isn't really bad at all).

I think a lot of it is he came out at slightly the wrong time. Had he started 5 years later with his old style, I think he'd be a lot better received (I mean, I don't see how he couldn't at least be J.Cole or something?). Although his major debut was kinda a mess-dude somehow couldn't get a hit with a Lady Gaga feature when she was at her peak.

I have a feeling there's a decent number of rap dudes who love wresting, at least based on my twitter feed around the ppvs that come out.

I've always kinda liked Wale. But he doesn't have an angle or signature sound. He's just a slightly self-aware rapping dude that tries to mix in go-go but go-go is its own complicated genre. I doubt there is an audience for go-go influenced hiphop at all. Even Def Jam tried back in the day. We' had discussions about him in the old thread.

This is probably my favorite song by him:

attention deficit bombing is definitely the reason why he changed so much but drat. sometimes i just can't recognize wale as the same person from 100 miles and running/mixtape about nothing. i think it's probably the most drastic change i've seen in hip-hop. also lol i completely forgot he had a lady gaga single that somehow managed to not get popular

boosie's post-jail mixtape is actually really good and most of the hate i've seen being thrown at it was from white datpiff commenters complaining that it didn't have enough "bangers"

I feel like go-go influences/drums will perpetually be a sound that you'll hear pop up once every few years for a big single, will have a bunch of heads on the internet download the entire Rare Essence catalogue, then fade back into regional obscurity again. And that's a drat shame because it's some of the most fun & energetic music music of the last few decades, doubly so when you consider the live performance aspects.

Despite not being a "true" go-go sample if there were more music like this being made/popularized on a national scale I'd be a much happier person;
